A chicken-wire frame is a picture frame with mesh fastened across its opening. The mesh turns the frame into a lightweight display for clipped photos, postcards, reminders, or jewelry. You can make one by reusing a wooden frame or by building a simple frame from wood strips, then cutting the wire to fit the back and securing it with staples.

What a chicken-wire frame is and why it is useful
Unlike a conventional picture frame, this project leaves the center open and adds chicken wire instead of glass, a backing board, and a photograph. Small clips, clothespins, hooks, or pierced jewelry can attach to the mesh, so the contents can be changed without opening the frame each time. The result is both wall décor and an organizing surface.

Typical displays include snapshots, postcards, greeting cards, shopping lists, children’s artwork, appointment reminders, earrings, necklaces, and hair accessories. The frame’s size, the way an item is attached, and the strength of the wall hardware determine how much you can display. The tutorials behind this project do not establish a universal load rating, so treat the mesh as a display surface rather than a structural rack.

Debbie Westbrooks described the material in her Refresh Restyle post of April 27, 2012, this way: “Chicken wire is cool, but a little prickly to work with.” That is her practical description, not a formal safety standard, but it captures the main handling issue: cut ends can be sharp and must be dealt with before the frame goes into a living space.
Choose the frame style before you start
Three approaches appear in common DIY versions. Your choice affects the amount of cutting, the final look, and whether you can reuse something you already own.
| Approach | What you use | Advantages | Things to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reuse an existing picture frame | An old wooden frame, chicken wire, staples, and snips | Fastest route; the corners are already joined and the finish may already suit your room | Remove the glass and backing; inspect the rear edge for a flat, solid stapling surface |
| Build a frame from wood strips | Furring strips or similar wood, wood glue, nails, sandpaper, chicken wire, staples, and snips | Lets you choose exact outside dimensions and make a large or unusually shaped display | Corners must be square and joints must cure before the mesh is attached |
| Use an unfinished craft frame | A ready-made unfinished frame, paint if desired, chicken wire, staples, and snips | Provides a clean base for a painted or distressed finish without building the frame | Paint before attaching the mesh, and allow the finish to dry fully |
A frame that is deep enough to accept staples along its rear edge is easier to work with than a very thin decorative frame. Hold the frame face down and look for a continuous strip of wood around the opening. If the back is covered by fragile veneer, plastic, or a narrow channel, choose another frame or plan a different fastening method.
Materials and tools
- A wooden picture frame, unfinished craft frame, or wood strips for a homemade frame
- Chicken wire mesh large enough to cover the opening with a small margin on all sides
- A staple gun and compatible staples
- Wire cutters or tin snips
- Wood glue and nails if you are building the frame from strips
- Sandpaper for smoothing wood and, if needed, dulling exposed wire ends
- Paint, stain, or another finish if you want a colored or distressed frame
- Clips, small clothespins, or jewelry hooks for the finished display
- Wall hardware appropriate for the frame’s finished weight and your wall type
The tutorials do not specify one universally correct wire gauge, mesh opening, or staple size. Select mesh that is rigid enough for the objects you intend to clip on, and choose staples that fit your staple gun and seat securely in the frame. A supplier page gives an example order size of 23 × 38 inches; that is a product-specific example, not a general project requirement.
Plan the dimensions and display capacity
Measure the frame opening, not just the outside dimensions. The opening determines the visible display area, while the outside dimensions determine how much wall space the finished piece occupies. Record both measurements before buying or cutting mesh.
For a reused frame, place it face down and measure the length and width of the recess or wood border where the wire will be stapled. For a frame built from strips, decide whether your stated dimensions refer to the outside edge or the inside opening, then keep that choice consistent when cutting the strips. A narrow border leaves less room for staples; a wider border gives you more fastening area but reduces the visible mesh.

Think about capacity in rows and columns. A small frame may hold a handful of 4-by-6-inch photos, while a larger frame can carry several postcards or a cluster of jewelry. Leave enough empty mesh around each item so clips do not collide. For earrings, orient the frame where the mesh openings are easy to reach. For notes and reminders, place it at eye level near the area where those papers are used.

1. Prepare the frame
Remove the glass, backing board, picture, and any retaining tabs from an existing frame. Set aside the parts you may want to reuse, but do not leave glass in place: the wire is meant to span the opening by itself. Brush away dust and check that the rear edge is clean and dry.
If you are building a frame, cut the wood strips to your planned dimensions. Apply wood glue to the joints, bring the corners together, and reinforce them with nails. Check that the frame is square by comparing the diagonal measurements or by using a square. Let the glue cure according to its label before applying tension to the mesh. Sand rough wood, especially on the front and the rear edge where your hands will work.
2. Finish the wood before adding wire
Paint, stain, or distress the frame while it is still unobstructed. An unfinished wood frame can remain natural, or you can apply a color that contrasts with the metal mesh. Allow every coat to dry before continuing. Finishing first prevents paint from clogging the mesh and makes it easier to reach the inside corners.
3. Measure and cut the chicken wire
Unroll the mesh on a protected work surface. Place the frame face down on top of it, or mark a rectangle using the opening and the rear stapling border as your guide. Cut a piece that covers the entire opening and reaches far enough onto the back edge for staples. A small margin is useful, but excessive overlap creates more sharp offcuts and makes corners bulky.

Cut slowly with wire cutters or snips. Support the section you are cutting so the mesh does not spring toward you. Keep the cut piece flat and set aside the scrap wire immediately; loose offcuts are easy to step on or catch on clothing.

4. Staple the mesh to the back
Lay the cut wire over the rear of the frame and align the mesh with the opening. Start with one staple at the center of one side, then place a staple at the center of the opposite side while keeping the wire flat. Repeat on the remaining two sides. This opposing pattern helps distribute tension and reduces the chance that the mesh will pull the frame out of square.
Continue adding staples toward the corners, spacing them closely enough that the wire cannot lift between fasteners. Keep staples on the solid wood border rather than in the open recess. Press the mesh down as you work, but do not stretch it so aggressively that the frame twists. The Ribbons and Glue method uses a pneumatic staple gun; a hand staple gun can work when its staples are suited to the frame and the wire.
5. Trim and secure the excess
Turn the frame over and inspect every edge. Trim wire that extends beyond the frame so it cannot snag a wall, hand, or item being displayed. Run a fingertip near—but not directly across—each cut edge to locate points that still protrude. Fold a short projecting end flat against the rear of the frame, add a staple where appropriate, or remove the point with snips.
Do not hang the frame until there are no sharp cut ends accessible from the front or sides. The Prairie Homestead instructions and the other tutorials all treat trimming as a final part of fastening, not an optional cosmetic step.
6. Install wall hardware and test the display
Choose hanging hardware based on the finished frame weight and the wall surface. Attach it to the frame’s solid wood, not to the mesh. Hang the empty frame first and check that it sits level. Add one lightweight item, then several, and watch for movement, loose staples, or a frame that pulls away from the wall. If anything shifts, take the frame down and correct the fastening before loading it further.
Ways to use the finished frame
Photo and postcard display
Use small clips or clothespins to attach prints without punching holes in them. Arrange images in a loose grid for a tidy look, or vary heights for a casual collage. Leave enough margin around the frame so the border remains visible. Because the contents are removable, you can rotate seasonal photographs or travel postcards without rebuilding the display.

Memo and reminder board
Assign sections of the mesh to categories such as bills, appointments, school papers, and shopping notes. Clip papers by their top edge so the writing remains visible. Keep the board where the household already pauses; a beautiful frame in an unused hallway will be less useful than a smaller one near a desk or entryway.

Jewelry organizer
Light earrings can pass through the mesh openings, while necklaces and bracelets can hang from small hooks or clips. Sort pieces by type or color and leave clearance between chains to reduce tangling. Test each hook with one item before filling the frame. Heavier jewelry should go on a separate organizer unless your frame and wall hardware are clearly designed for that load.

The frame can be a quiet neutral, a bold accent, or a deliberately weathered piece. Paint the entire frame one color for a clean display, use two colors and sand the edges for a distressed effect, or leave the wood unfinished so the mesh becomes the visual focus. A dark finish makes light notes and photographs stand out; a pale finish keeps a jewelry display airy.
Keep the front edge smooth and uncluttered. Decorative trim can look attractive, but raised ornaments may catch clips or make the frame difficult to dust. If you want a themed display, change the contents rather than permanently gluing items to the mesh. That preserves the frame’s main advantage: quick rearrangement.
Safety and durability checks
- Wear eye protection while cutting or trimming wire, and keep hands clear of the snips’ cutting path.
- Handle the mesh with work gloves if your hands are sensitive to sharp edges.
- Inspect both the front and rear after trimming; a point hidden behind the frame can still scratch a wall or catch fabric.
- Use staples that seat fully. A raised staple can snag an item or indicate that the wood is too thin for that fastener.
- Keep the finished piece away from areas where children or pets can pull on the mesh unless every edge and attachment has been secured.
- Do not assume the frame can hold heavy tools, planters, or dense collections. The cited tutorials provide craft methods, not structural load limits.
Recheck the staples and wall hardware after the first day and again after rearranging the contents. Seasonal changes in humidity can move wood slightly, and repeated clipping can loosen a marginal fastener.
Troubleshooting common problems
The mesh sags in the middle
Remove the contents and inspect the staple pattern. Add fasteners along the sides while keeping the wire evenly tensioned. If the frame itself has twisted, take the mesh off, square the frame, and reattach it rather than trying to force the wire to correct the shape.

The wire edge is scratching or snagging
Take the frame down and trim the offending strand closer to the wood. Fold or staple down any short end that remains. Sanding may dull a tiny burr, but it is not a substitute for removing a protruding point.
Staples will not hold
Check that you are stapling into solid wood and that the staple gun is compatible with the staple length. A very narrow or brittle frame may not provide enough material. In that case, choose a sturdier frame or add a wooden strip on the rear before fastening the mesh.
The frame looks crowded
Reduce the number of items, use smaller clips, or group objects by a single theme. The mesh is a grid, but the display does not need to fill every opening. Empty space helps photos, notes, or jewelry remain legible.

DIY instructions agree on the basic sequence: prepare a wooden frame, cut mesh to the opening, staple it to the back, and trim the excess. They do not establish one required mesh gauge, opening size, staple specification, frame dimension, or weight capacity. Those choices should follow your frame construction and the items you plan to display.
That flexibility is the reason the project adapts well to an old frame, a newly assembled wood rectangle, or an unfinished craft frame. Measure your own opening, choose a finish that fits the room, and test the completed frame with lightweight contents before expanding the display.
