Make a Chinese finger trap by weaving four narrow paper strips around a pencil or dowel. The finished tube tightens when you pull its ends apart; push the ends together to widen the openings and remove your fingers.
What you need
- One sheet of standard letter- or A4-size paper
- Scissors, or a craft knife and cutting mat
- Ruler
- Glue
- A wooden dowel, rod or pencil slightly narrower than the finger that will go inside
- Removable tape or thumbtacks for temporarily holding the strips
Contrasting paper colors are optional. Smooth, lightweight paper is easiest to weave and is less likely to leave sharp edges. Bamboo, fabric and ribbon can also be used for other constructions, but paper is the most accessible choice for a first attempt.

Make the four-strip paper version
- Cut the strips. Use the ruler to mark four strips along the sheet’s long edge, each about 1/2 inch (13 mm) wide. Cut them with scissors. If using a craft knife, keep your non-cutting hand behind the blade’s cutting path.
- Create two L-shaped pairs. Glue two strips together at a right angle, forming an L. Repeat with the remaining two strips. Allow the adhesive to grip before weaving.
- Set up the form. Place the two L-shaped pairs on opposite sides of the dowel or pencil. Hold them temporarily with removable tape or thumbtacks so the strips stay aligned while you begin.
- Start the braid. Weave the four strips around the form in an alternating over-under pattern. Keep each crossing snug, but do not crush or sharply crease the paper.
- Build the tube. Continue the same over-under sequence until the woven section is roughly 5 1/2 inches (14 cm) long in the cited example. Check that the braid remains even and that the tube can slide along the form.
- Secure and finish. Glue the overlapping strip ends on two opposite sides. Once the glue has set enough to hold, slide the woven tube off the dowel, then trim excess paper.
How the trap works
The woven cylinder is a biaxial braid. Its strips run diagonally in opposing directions, so its length and circumference change together.
- Pulling the ends apart: the braid lengthens, its braid angle decreases and the circumference shrinks. The openings become narrower and grip fingers more tightly.
- Pushing the ends together: the braid shortens and the circumference expands. The openings become wide enough to release fingers.
Demonstrate the release motion before anyone puts fingers inside. Never yank outward against a tightened trap.

How to get your fingers out
- Stop pulling the two ends apart.
- Push the ends toward one another to enlarge both openings.
- Slide your fingers out gently once the paper tube has loosened.
If the braid does not widen, keep the ends together and work the tube back toward its shorter, wider shape rather than applying force.

The four-strip and eight-strip approaches are variants, not conflicting methods. In either case, the finished tube must be sized so its openings are appropriate for the intended user’s fingers.

Safety and teaching notes
- Use scissors carefully; with a craft knife, cut on a stable mat and keep the other hand behind the blade.
- Choose smooth, lightweight paper and trim protruding corners or adhesive-heavy edges.
- Use a form slightly narrower than the intended finger, but do not make an opening so small that release requires force.
- Explain and demonstrate pushing the ends together before any participant inserts a finger.
- For classroom paper-engineering activities, supervise cutting, gluing and the first use of every trap.
Why it is called a Chinese finger trap
The name is also used for “Chinese finger puzzle” and “Chinese thumb cuff.” Historical records do not establish that the object originated in China: an earlier single-ended version was recorded by 1870, “finger trap” appears by 1900, and the phrase “Chinese finger trap” appears in a 1953 Ohio advertisement. The label should therefore be treated as a conventional name, not proof of geographic origin.
