The quickest way to make an Instagram Story collage is to use Layout for a neat grid. For overlapping photos, scrapbook-style designs, or cutout subjects, use Instagram’s photo layers or Cutouts. If you need exact spacing, borders, templates, or business branding, create the collage in Canva or Adobe Express first, then upload it to Stories.

Instagram’s buttons and sticker names can vary by device, account, app version, and region, so the alternatives below matter if a control is missing.

What is an Instagram Story collage?

Usually, a collage means one Story frame containing several images. That is different from selecting several photos and publishing them as separate Story slides. It is also different from a feed carousel, which places multiple images in one Instagram feed post.

You can create several kinds of Story collage:

  • Grid collage: evenly sized photos arranged in a fixed pattern.
  • Freeform collage: movable, resizable, overlapping images.
  • Scrapbook collage: photos, cutout people or objects, text, GIFs, and decorative stickers layered together.
  • Designed collage: a precisely built graphic made in an external editor.

Before you start

  1. Update Instagram through the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Allow Instagram access to your photo library when prompted.
  3. Choose photos with a coherent subject, lighting, or color palette.
  4. Decide whether you want a grid, freeform layout, cutout design, or externally designed graphic.

Instagram Stories are vertical. A practical working canvas is 1080 × 1920 pixels, or a 9:16 ratio; Canva identifies this as the standard Story format in its current guide (Canva’s Instagram Story guide).

Keep faces, logos, products, and important text away from the extreme top and bottom of the frame. Instagram’s interface can cover those areas. For paid Story ads, Meta recommends leaving approximately 14% of the top and 20% of the bottom free of important creative elements; that is ad guidance, but it is a useful conservative rule for organic Stories too (Meta’s Story creative guidance).

The fastest method: use Instagram Layout

Layout is best for a quick, symmetrical collage such as a travel recap, birthday grid, outfit set, food montage, or simple product display. It requires no separate app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Instagram and start a new Story by tapping your profile picture, the Create button, or swiping right from the feed.
  2. On the Story creation screen, choose Layout. Depending on the current interface, it may appear as a mode or tool in the camera screen.
  3. Select the grid arrangement you want.
  4. Add an image to each section by taking a photo or choosing one from your camera roll.
  5. Replace or remove any image that does not crop well.
  6. Add text, music, GIFs, mentions, location, or other stickers.
  7. Preview the complete frame, then tap Your Story. Use Instagram’s save or download control if you want a copy first.

Instagram can change the available arrangements. Canva currently describes Layout as offering six choices, but that number and the exact designs are not permanent.

Layout’s limitation

Layout is the easiest native method, not the most flexible. It generally cannot give you the control needed for overlapping images, irregular shapes, custom spacing, text between photos, or a scrapbook composition. If you want one large focal image surrounded by smaller photos, use freeform layers instead.

How to make a freeform Instagram Story collage

Freeform layers let you vary image size, overlap photos, rotate them, and place text or a central subject wherever you want.

  1. Start a new Story.
  2. Choose a background photo, color, or video. A plain color or lightly textured image can make the collage easier to read.
  3. Open the Stickers tray.
  4. Look for a photo- or gallery-style control that lets you add an image from your camera roll.
  5. Select a photo, then pinch to resize it and drag it into place.
  6. Use two fingers to rotate the image. Repeat until all photos are added.
  7. Layer the images, then add text, GIFs, music, mentions, polls, or links.
  8. Preview the Story before publishing.

The control may not be labeled Photo on every account. Meta says stickers are accessed from the sticker button, but also notes that sticker availability varies and recommends updating Instagram when a sticker is missing (Meta’s sticker help page).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Device-dependent copy-and-paste fallback

On some phones and app versions, you can open the Photos app, copy an image, return to the Story editor, and paste it as a movable layer. This is useful when the photo/gallery sticker is unavailable, but it is not a universal Instagram feature. If it does not work, use Layout, Cutouts, or an external editor.

How to use Cutouts for a scrapbook collage

Instagram’s Cutouts feature turns a person or object from a photo or video into a custom sticker. It is useful for placing a subject over a colored background, another image, or a handmade-looking scrapbook design.

  1. Create a new Story.
  2. Tap the Stickers icon and choose Cutouts.
  3. Select a clear photo or video from your camera roll.
  4. Let Instagram identify the subject.
  5. If the selection is wrong, choose Select manually and tap the subject.
  6. Add the cutout to the Story.
  7. Resize, rotate, and position it.
  8. Repeat with other photos, then add a background, text, frames, GIFs, or music.

Meta says Cutouts can be manually adjusted and saved in the sticker tray for reuse (Meta’s Cutouts help page). Its announcement also describes using the resulting sticker in Stories and Reels (Meta’s Cutouts announcement).

Cutouts work best when

  • The subject is clear and has strong contrast with its background.
  • Hair, shadows, and transparent objects are not critical to the design.
  • You want one person or object isolated at a time.

Cutouts are automatic subject detection, not professional masking. Edges can be imperfect around hair, transparent materials, shadows, and busy backgrounds. Meta’s help information says manual selection can select only one subject at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You may also be able to make a sticker from another person’s Instagram post when the account and post are eligible for reuse. Technical access does not automatically give you permission to reuse someone else’s image. Ask for permission when appropriate, and respect the creator’s rights. Meta notes that if an original post is deleted, content using the resulting sticker may also be deleted.

How to make a collage in Canva

Canva is a better choice when you need exact borders, spacing, fonts, logos, reusable templates, or a consistent visual system for a business or art project.

  1. Open Canva and search for an Instagram Story design, or create a custom 1080 × 1920 canvas.
  2. Choose a blank page or a collage template.
  3. Upload your photos.
  4. Drag them into frames or position them manually.
  5. Adjust cropping, spacing, borders, alignment, and shadows.
  6. Add text, logos, colors, shapes, or other decorative elements.
  7. Check the top and bottom safe areas.
  8. Export as PNG or JPG for a still collage, or MP4 if the design is animated.
  9. Upload the finished file to Instagram Stories.

Canva’s advantage is control before the design reaches Instagram. Its trade-off is the extra export-and-upload step. Canva Free is sufficient for many basic collages; premium templates, assets, and some editing features may require a paid plan. Displayed US annual prices on Canva’s pricing page were US$144 for Pro and US$250 per person for Business when checked on August 16, 2026. Prices, plans, and regional availability can change (Canva pricing).

How to make a collage in Adobe Express

Adobe Express is most useful if you already work with Adobe tools or need a broader branded-content workflow, including templates, stock assets, resizing, collaboration, or scheduling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Adobe Express and choose an Instagram Story template or a custom 9:16 design.
  2. Upload photos and place them in frames or on the canvas.
  3. Set borders, spacing, colors, fonts, logos, and other brand elements.
  4. Use resize tools when adapting the design for other platforms.
  5. Export the finished design and upload it to Instagram.

Adobe lists a free plan and a Premium plan. Premium was displayed at US$9.99 per month, with a 30-day trial shown, when checked on August 16, 2026. Listed features included premium templates and assets, one-click resize, brand management, 100GB of storage, and scheduling; pricing and features can change (Adobe Express pricing).

For a one-off personal collage, Adobe Express is usually more functionality than you need. Its value increases when you produce branded or repeated content.

Meta’s Story documentation includes music, location, mention, poll, question, GIF, link, and Cutouts stickers, although availability varies by account and region (Meta’s sticker documentation).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For organic Stories, these elements can make a collage interactive. For boosted or paid Stories, restrictions apply: Meta states that Stories containing a link sticker cannot be boosted, and other tappable elements, aspect ratios, or complex creative tools may also affect eligibility (Meta’s Story boosting restrictions).

Design tips for a collage people can actually read

  • Choose a focal point: use one larger image with smaller supporting photos instead of giving every image equal visual weight.
  • Limit the palette: two or three colors usually feel more intentional than many competing accents.
  • Be consistent with borders: use white borders for a photo-album effect, black for stronger contrast, a brand color for identity, or no borders for a seamless montage.
  • Avoid overcrowding: a dense grid can make every photo too small on a phone.
  • Protect faces and details: keep faces, product features, and lettering near the center of each image when possible.
  • Use short text: a title or caption is easier to read than a paragraph layered over several photos.
  • Use negative space: an uncluttered area gives text and stickers somewhere to go.
  • Preview before posting: check cropping, readability, sticker placement, and the final balance of the frame.

Instagram Story collage troubleshooting

“I can’t find Layout.”

  1. Update Instagram.
  2. Close and reopen the app.
  3. Start from Instagram’s main Story camera rather than another posting flow.
  4. Check the Create mode and the sticker tray.
  5. If Layout remains unavailable, use photo layers, Cutouts, or Canva.

Instagram may show different interfaces during feature tests, and some features are not available to every user. Instagram Lite, a browser, or a desktop experience may also have fewer creation controls.

“I can only add one photo.”

Look for Layout or a photo/gallery-style sticker. You can also try copying a photo from your phone’s Photos app and pasting it into the Story, if your device supports that workflow. Otherwise, make the collage in Canva or Adobe Express and upload it as one finished image.

“My collage looks blurry.”

  • Use original photos rather than screenshots.
  • Work on a 1080 × 1920 canvas.
  • Export once at an appropriate quality.
  • Avoid repeatedly downloading and re-uploading the same file.
  • Check the Story preview before publishing.

Low-resolution originals, repeated compression, small external exports, and screenshots are common causes. Instagram may still compress uploads, but starting with a correctly sized, clean export gives you the best result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Instagram crops my photos.”

Reposition the image inside its Layout cell or frame. If the crop still fails, crop each photo in an external editor before importing it. Use a consistent aspect ratio and keep faces and important details away from image edges.

“Cutouts selects the wrong object.”

Choose a clearer, higher-contrast source image and try Select manually. Select one subject at a time. If the edge is still unusable, redo the cutout or use an external background-removal tool rather than forcing a complex mask inside Instagram.

“A sticker is covering my collage.”

Move it over a low-detail area, keep key copy in the center, and leave more room at the top and bottom. Preview the Story from a viewer’s perspective before sharing.

“I want to boost the Story, but Instagram will not let me.”

Check whether the Story contains a link sticker or another restricted interactive element. A link sticker can be useful for an organic Story but can prevent boosting. Create a separate paid-compatible version if promotion matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add multiple photos to one Instagram Story?

Yes. Use Layout for a fixed grid, photo/gallery layers where available for a freeform collage, or upload one completed collage made in an external editor.

What size should an Instagram Story collage be?

Use a 9:16 canvas, commonly 1080 × 1920 pixels. Keep important content away from the top and bottom because Instagram’s interface may cover it.

Can I add music to an Instagram collage?

Yes. Arrange the collage first, then use Instagram’s Music sticker if it is available for your account and region.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I make an Instagram Story collage on a computer?

Desktop and browser creation tools may not include every native collage control. For reliable results, create the design in a desktop editor, export it, and upload it through Instagram’s supported workflow.

Do I need Canva to make a collage?

No. Instagram’s native Layout, photo layers, and Cutouts tools are enough for many personal collages. Canva is useful when you need precise placement, templates, or branding.
