Turn a narrow-neck terracotta vase into a cordless accent lamp with three main pieces: a mini lampshade, a battery-powered puck light and the vase itself. The light sits inside the shade cage, while the shade rests on the vase neck. No wiring is required, but the finished lamp produces a soft ambient glow—not enough light for reading, cooking or replacing a room’s main fixture.
What this vase lamp actually is
This project is a small, unwired decorative lamp assembled from thrifted parts. A battery-powered puck light supplies the illumination, a mini lampshade diffuses it, and a vase provides the base. Because the light is self-contained, you can place the lamp on a kitchen counter, shelf, nightstand or console without routing a cord to an outlet.

Lauren’s tutorial at Bless’er House (published August 15, 2022, and updated September 20, 2024) describes the result as cozy accent lighting rather than a primary source. Materials and dimensions to gather
- Narrow-neck terracotta vase: Choose a neck approximately the diameter of a conventional light-bulb socket. The exact measurement is less important than a stable match between the vase neck and the shade base.
- Mini lampshade: A shade rescued from another lamp or found at a thrift store works well. Its cage must be large enough to hold the puck light, and its lower ring must sit securely on the vase neck.
- Battery-powered puck light: The documented setup uses a soft-white or warm-white puck light with AA batteries. A remote-controlled model may add dimming and timer functions.
- AA batteries: Standard disposable batteries will work if specified by the light. Rechargeable AA batteries are an alternative for reducing repeat purchases.
- Glue dots or double-sided mounting tape: These are optional stabilizers for a shade that shifts on the vase neck. They are not structural glue for repairing a cracked vase.
Do not buy the light before checking the shade cage. A puck that is too large will not sit inside the cage; one that is too small may fall through or leave the shade visibly unbalanced. Likewise, a shade that looks proportional in a shop may have a lower ring wider than the vase neck and need a different base.

Inspect the thrifted pieces before assembly
Check the vase for hidden damage
Examine the terracotta in bright light, including the neck, rim and underside. Look for hairline cracks, loose fragments and a base that rocks on a flat surface. The author of the Bless’er House tutorial had accidentally cracked her example vase and glued the neck back together. That repair is a warning to inspect the neck carefully: it carries the shade and can fail if the lamp is bumped.
Do not use a vase with a crack that opens when gently pressed, a missing section that prevents the shade from sitting level, or a base that cannot stand securely. A decorative lamp should not be displayed where a falling ceramic piece could injure someone or damage a counter.
Test the shade and light as a set
Before adding adhesive, place the puck light in the center of the empty shade cage. Turn the shade upside down only if doing so is safe for the light and its switch or remote sensor. Confirm that the light does not touch the fabric, that the cage does not tip, and that the puck can still be turned on or controlled.
Set the shade on the vase neck without tape. View it from several angles and lightly nudge the vase. If the shade slides, rocks or leans, use glue dots or short pieces of double-sided mounting tape where the shade’s lower ring meets the vase. The goal is removable friction and stability, not a permanent bond that makes the lamp difficult to service.

How to assemble the cordless lamp
- Clean and dry the components. Wipe dust from the vase neck and shade ring so the parts sit flush. Let any damp terracotta dry completely before adding tape.
- Install the batteries. Insert the AA batteries according to the puck light’s polarity markings. If you are using rechargeables, charge them with the charger specified for those cells before installation.
- Place the puck in the shade cage. Center the light inside the cage. Keep its controls accessible enough to operate, or orient the remote sensor toward the room where you will use the lamp.
- Balance the shade on the vase. Lower the shade’s base ring onto the vase neck. Keep the puck centered while you set the ring down; shifting the light to one side can make the entire shade lean.
- Stabilize only if necessary. Add glue dots or double-sided mounting tape between the ring and neck if a gentle bump makes the shade move. Press the shade down evenly rather than forcing one side.
- Perform a stability check. Switch the lamp on, step back and verify that the shade is level. Give the vase a cautious tap on the counter beside it—not a hard impact—to ensure the shade does not slide off.
- Position the finished lamp. Keep it on a stable, dry surface away from the edge of a counter, heavy traffic, pets and children who could pull on the shade.
The finished build has no mains wiring, socket installation or cord to conceal. That simplicity is also why the project is best treated as a movable accent rather than a permanent electrical fixture.
How to turn it on without rebalancing the shade
A puck light with a top-mounted button may require you to lift or reach under the shade each time. If the shade remains balanced, pressing the button should not require disassembling the lamp, but repeated handling can eventually move a loose ring. A remote-controlled puck light avoids that problem: leave the shade in place and use the remote for on/off operation, dimming or a timer when those functions are included on the specific model.
Keep the remote’s operating range and sensor direction in mind. If the shade or vase blocks the receiver, aim the remote toward the open side of the cage. A remote does not make every puck light compatible; confirm that the remote is supplied with, or designed for, the light you purchase.
Brightness, runtime and battery choices
Expect ambient light, not task illumination
The soft-white or warm-white puck creates a gentle pool of light through the shade. It can add warmth to a dark corner, provide a low-level night-light effect or make a shelf display easier to see. It is not a dependable source for reading, chopping ingredients, following a recipe or lighting an entire kitchen. Lauren describes her version as too dim to serve as the main light, and An Organized Season makes the same distinction between mood lighting and a reading lamp.

What the published runtime means
Lauren reports using a puck light for about two hours per day and getting roughly one month from higher-quality rechargeable batteries such as those sold by Energizer or Duracell. That is one author’s experience, not a laboratory test, product specification or guarantee. The tutorial does not identify a puck-light model, measured brightness, battery capacity, ambient temperature or controlled test procedure, so an exact universal runtime cannot be calculated from it.
Your result will vary with the light’s electronics, brightness setting, timer use, battery capacity, battery age and how long the lamp runs each day. Replace or recharge the batteries when the light becomes noticeably dim or stops responding. Follow the light manufacturer’s instructions for charging and storage, and remove batteries if the lamp will sit unused for an extended period.

The rechargeable-bulb approach is useful when a larger shade or vase makes the puck arrangement impractical. A separate Apartment Therapy example emphasizes measuring the vase opening against the lamp base. Do not assume a bulb, base or shade that works in one vase will fit another: the opening, neck diameter and internal depth are different design constraints.
For a larger shade, the original tutorial also suggests a battery-powered bulb and mentions a rechargeable version as a way to avoid buying replacement batteries. That is a different geometry from the narrow-neck puck design, so test the complete combination before committing to adhesive.

Troubleshooting common problems
The shade rocks or slides
- Remove the shade and check whether the vase neck is chipped or uneven.
- Re-center the puck; an off-center light can shift the balance point.
- Add small glue dots or double-sided mounting tape to the clean, dry contact area.
- Move the lamp to a level surface if the counter or shelf itself is uneven.
The puck will not stay inside the cage
- Measure the cage’s interior width and compare it with the puck’s diameter.
- Choose a smaller puck or a shade with a tighter, supportive cage.
- Do not wedge the light against fabric or force the cage closed around it.
The lamp is too dim
First check that the batteries are fresh or fully charged and that the puck is set to its highest available brightness. If the light is still only a glow, that may be normal for this project. Use it as accent lighting or choose a brighter, compatible rechargeable bulb or cordless lamp for a wider vase. A brighter alternative still needs adequate ventilation and physical clearance according to its own instructions.
The remote does not operate the light
Confirm that the puck and remote are a matched set, install batteries in the remote if required, and point it toward the receiver. Remove obstructions such as a thick shade wall or a vase display placed directly in front of the sensor. If the light has a manual power switch that must be enabled first, turn it on before testing remote commands.

The vase or neck is cracked
Stop using the lamp if the crack affects stability. A repaired decorative vase may be suitable only when the repair is sound and the shade sits level; a crack that flexes, widens or leaves sharp edges is not a safe base. Replace the vase rather than relying on additional tape to support damaged ceramic.
Sourcing the project on a small budget
Thrift stores are the natural source for both the terracotta vase and the mini shade. Search for a vase with a narrow, intact neck and a shade whose cage already matches the puck light you intend to use. Buying the shade and vase as separate visual pieces lets you tune the proportions, but fit should come before color or pattern.

Lauren reports paying $5 for her vase in 2022. That is an individual thrift-store purchase, not a current average or a promise that a similar vase will cost the same today. The light, batteries, shade and optional stabilizers add separate costs that depend on the products and local availability.
When shopping, bring a tape measure or record the dimensions of the puck light and shade cage in advance. Reusing an existing lampshade and choosing rechargeable batteries can reduce waste, while glue dots make it easier to disassemble the lamp if you later find a better-fitting shade.

- Keep the lamp dry; the vase may be ceramic, but the puck light and batteries are not automatically waterproof.
- Do not cover ventilation openings on the light or place the puck against hot bulbs or heat-producing equipment.
- Check the shade’s balance after moving the lamp, replacing batteries or changing the puck’s position.
- Remove depleted batteries promptly and dispose of them according to local battery-recycling rules.
- Use the lamp where a bumped shade cannot fall onto a person, hot cookware or a sink.
This battery-powered assembly should not be confused with a corded lamp-conversion project. Apartment Therapy’s cord-conversion guidance applies to that separate method: unplug before cutting a cord, and ensure a bulb is switched off and cool before removing it. Those precautions do not turn the vase-and-puck arrangement into a wired lamp; they simply prevent readers from mixing two different projects.
When this project is the right choice
Choose the narrow-neck vase version when you want a low-commitment accent lamp made from thrifted parts, need to avoid a power cord and are comfortable with a gentle, decorative level of light. It is especially practical for a shelf or counter where a remote can operate the puck without disturbing the shade.
Choose a rechargeable bulb or cordless lamp instead when your vase has a wider opening, you want a larger shade, or replacing AA batteries would be inconvenient. In either case, measure the opening, test the complete assembly for balance and treat published runtime figures as estimates tied to a particular product and usage pattern.
