You can make a simple diorama with a reused box, paper or cardboard, scissors, glue or tape, and a few drawing supplies. First choose one scene to show; then plan the background and objects, build them in layers for depth, and secure the pieces that need to stay put.

Choose a scene you can show clearly

Start with one focused subject: a moment from a book, a room, a landscape, a collection display, or an animal in its habitat. For a first project, one main subject is easier to plan than a whole world of loosely connected details. Planet Word suggests starting with a book, scene, or specific line; for a habitat project, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHMLA) recommends choosing a focal animal.

Decide what viewers should notice first. That choice will guide the background, figures, colors, and where you place each object.

Gather references and supplies

Look up the details that make the scene recognizable

For a real habitat or place, find references for its setting and defining details before you build. Research the backdrop, plants, animals, and how they relate to one another. Photographs or drawings can help when you cannot use an object as a direct reference; museum model makers use objects, photographs, and drawings to guide their work.

For an imagined or literary scene, revisit the relevant passage or image and note a few details you want to include. A small number of well-chosen details can communicate the subject more clearly than trying to depict everything.

Use what you have

A shoebox works well, but a tissue box, cereal box, mailing box, or another sturdy reused container can also be a base. A larger box may be easier to work in; the Illinois State Museum classroom guide makes that suggestion. You do not need a specialty kit.

The National Museum of Australia (NMA) advises adult help with cutting tools. Children should use scissors appropriate to their age and have an adult handle any tool that is not suitable for them.

Plan the box and layout

Before attaching anything, decide what belongs at the back, in the middle, and in the foreground. Sketch the arrangement on paper or make a quick rough layout with loose pieces. This helps keep the main subject visible and reduces the chance that a tall object will hide something important.

To size a paper background, the NMA suggests tracing the box so you can estimate the dimensions before cutting. Decide whether you will cover the inside walls, leave them plain, or decorate only the back wall and floor.

Make the background

Line or decorate the inside of the box with paper, drawings, or collage. A forest or outdoor scene might need a sky and landscape; an indoor scene might call for walls, windows, or furniture. Keep the background simple enough that it supports rather than competes with the main subject.

If the box has a lid or flaps that obstruct the view, trim or fold them only with appropriate adult help. You can also leave the box intact and use its opening as the viewing frame.

Build the main objects and figures

Draw and cut out figures from paper or thin cardboard, shape objects from clay, or adapt clean household materials into forms that suit the scene. Combine methods when it helps: a drawn backdrop, for example, can sit behind a clay figure and a cardboard tree.

For a habitat, match the plants, animals, and setting to the references you gathered rather than adding familiar but unrelated details. NHMLA recommends scaling a classroom project to the students’ age and dividing a larger project across sessions; a younger student can focus on one animal and its habitat.

Add depth with raised layers

A diorama feels less flat when objects sit at different distances from the viewer. Mount selected cutouts on small supports made from folded cardboard, lids, or foam board. Put distant elements near the back wall and closer objects toward the opening; leave enough space between them so the focal subject remains visible.

Not every element needs a stand. A mix of flat background pieces and raised figures usually gives the scene enough depth without making the layout crowded.

Attach the pieces and finish the display

Once the arrangement works, glue or tape down pieces that should remain in place. Secure them especially carefully if the diorama will be carried or displayed where it could be bumped. Leave pieces loose only when rearranging or play is part of the plan.

Paint or decorate the outside of the box if you like. For a project that will be handled, check that the figures and supports stay in place when the box is moved gently.

Add a label

Identify the scene or habitat with a short label. A sentence explaining what the viewer is looking at can make an imaginative scene easier to understand or point out the focus of a habitat display. Include an artist credit where the assignment or display calls for one.

Choose the right scope for your project

A shoebox is a practical frame for a compact scene, but it is not the only option. The Illinois State Museum describes an open outdoor scene on a base as a variation. Use an open base when the assignment or intended display calls for a wider view; otherwise, a box helps frame the scene and contain its pieces.

For a short family activity, the NMA estimates 45–60 minutes for its own project for ages 5–12; that is a source-specific estimate, not a general build time. NHMLA describes a larger classroom habitat project that can span three or four one-hour sessions after preparation. A detailed habitat or model takes longer than a simple story scene because it calls for research as well as construction.
