There are two different ways to make a “concrete” horse statuette. The quick decor method paints a plastic horse to imitate concrete and fixes it to a wooden base. A true concrete statuette requires a watertight mold, cement-based mix, vibration or tapping to remove air, and a curing period. Choose the first route for a lightweight indoor ornament; choose the second when the material itself must be concrete and you are prepared for mold-making, dust control and curing.

Choose the right method before buying supplies
| Decision point | Concrete-look horse (painted) | Cast concrete horse |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A plastic horse finished with two gray paints and mounted on wood. | A cement-based casting released from a silicone or other suitable mold. |
| Weight and handling | Light and easy to move; the wooden base adds stability. | Much heavier and more fragile at thin legs, ears and mane. |
| Mold work | None; you use a ready-made figurine. | Essential. A four-legged form has undercuts, narrow passages and trapped-air risks. |
| Time | Cleaning, two paint coats, drying and gluing. | Model preparation, mold cure, mixing, casting, demolding after the mix has hardened and additional curing. |
| Reusability | The same horse can be repainted, but it is not a casting mold. | A sound silicone mold can produce multiple casts, subject to wear and release-agent requirements. |
| Best use | Indoor shelf, mantel or equestrian-themed vignette. | A genuine concrete ornament for a stable, garden or substantial display base, provided the mix and mold are suitable. |
If you only need the appearance, do not pour cement around a horse unnecessarily. If you need a solid concrete object, paint cannot substitute for a cast.

Route A: make a lightweight concrete-look horse
Materials
- Small plastic horse figurine. A pose with all four hooves accessible is easiest to mount.
- Small wooden plaque or block with a flat, stable underside.
- Two complementary gray concrete-look paints: one lighter base gray and one darker gray.
- Medium craft brushes.
- Strong craft adhesive suitable for plastic and wood. One documented project used E6000 adhesive; follow the adhesive maker’s instructions and ventilation guidance.
- Optional matte clear coat to reduce scuffs on the painted surface.
- Cleaning cloths, mild detergent and a protected work surface.
Prepare the horse and base
- Wash the plastic horse and wooden base to remove dust, mold-release residue and skin oils. Let both dry completely.
- Check that the horse stands level and that the plaque does not rock. Lightly sand a glossy wooden surface if the paint manufacturer permits it, then remove sanding dust.
- Dry-fit the horse on the plaque and mark the hoof locations with a pencil. This prevents trying to position the piece while adhesive is already setting.
Build the concrete-like paint texture
- Apply a thin first coat of the lighter gray paint. Use a dabbing or stippling motion instead of long, perfectly smooth strokes. Let it dry according to the paint label.
- Apply a second light coat, again stippling to fill thin spots without flooding the details around the mane, face and hooves.
- While the second coat is still slightly tacky, pick up a small amount of the darker gray and dab it irregularly over the body, legs and base. Blend sparingly; varied patches look more like mineral variation than a uniform gray surface.
- Allow the paint to dry fully. A matte clear coat is optional, but test it on an inconspicuous area first because some clears alter the sheen or soften craft paint.
Attach the horse
- Apply adhesive to the hoof contact points, keeping excess away from the visible base.
- Set the horse on the marks, press gently and hold it in the position specified by the adhesive directions. Do not lift or stress the joint until the stated cure time has passed.
- Inspect the bond from underneath. If a hoof barely touches the plaque, add support rather than relying on a thick bead of glue at one point.
This route remains a painted plastic figurine, not concrete. Its advantage is control: you can choose any horse pose, avoid mold complications and finish the project without cement dust or a week-long cure.
Historical cost context
A separate equestrian DIY account reported spending about $23, while the earlier project it followed was reported at about $15. Those are dated examples dependent on materials already owned and local prices, not current budgets or guarantees. Your largest variables are the figurine, paint and adhesive.

Route B: cast a real concrete horse
A true casting starts with a model and a mold. A detailed four-legged horse is considerably harder than a simple block because the legs create narrow channels, the belly and neck form undercuts, and the mane and facial features can trap air or lock the model into the mold.

Plan the model and mold
- Choose a small, rigid horse model with a pose that can be divided into mold sections without trapping the legs.
- Stabilize the model on a board or other flat support. Smooth-On’s four-legged-animal tutorial marks reference lines and adds vents; those planning steps help identify where mold halves meet and where air can escape.
- Allow clearance around each leg. A mold that is technically flexible may still tear or hold a casting if a leg is too thin or deeply undercut.
- Decide how the finished horse will stand. A separate base or concealed support may be safer than asking thin concrete legs to carry the entire piece.
Materials and personal protection
- Concrete mix selected for small, detailed castings, or the cement, sand and aggregate specified by your chosen formula.
- Pourable silicone mold rubber and a container large enough to surround the model; a documented manufacturer process uses Mold Star 30.
- Plastic container, hot glue, mixing bowl and stick, pliers, waterproof gloves and safety glasses.
- Dust-control equipment, long sleeves and ventilation. Harvard GSD FabLab advises safety glasses, nitrile gloves, long sleeves, a dust mask for particulates and consultation of the product safety data sheet.
QUIKRETE’s manufacturer instructions state: “When working with cement-based products, always wear eye protection and waterproof gloves.” Keep the work area away from food, children and pets, and follow the selected product’s handling, disposal and cleanup directions.

Make a watertight silicone mold
- Secure the horse to the board and establish the parting line with reference marks. The line should expose the model without creating a hook-shaped cavity around the legs.
- Build a leak-resistant containment box around the model. Hot glue can seal the box to its base; inspect every seam before pouring silicone.
- Plan vents and a pour opening at high points where air would otherwise collect. Fine mane strands and the underside between legs are common trouble spots.
- Mix and pour the silicone exactly as its technical instructions specify. Pour in a controlled stream so the rubber rises around the model and displaces air rather than folding it into the mold.
- Allow the silicone to cure fully, then remove the box and model carefully. Use pliers only where the mold maker permits; do not tear thin mold walls around the legs.
Mold rubber choice, mixing ratio, cure time and release-agent requirements vary by product. The named Mold Star 30 example demonstrates the planning problem; it does not make that product mandatory for every horse or scale.
Select and mix the concrete
For a proprietary ready mix, use the bag’s water-to-product ratio and aggregate guidance. Harvard GSD FabLab specifically recommends following the manufacturer’s ratio rather than improvising water. Excess water can make placement easier but weakens the hardened piece and increases shrinkage or surface defects.

For a small ornament made from separate ingredients, the Concrete Society of Southern Africa’s 2024 guide gives two options:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- One part cement, one part concrete sand and one part stone.
- One part cement and two parts coarse concrete sand, with enough water for a sluggishly pourable mix.
The guide says the largest aggregate should be no more than one quarter of the narrowest section of the casting. Measure that narrowest passage first; a stone that is acceptable for the body may jam a leg or ear. These proportions are the guide’s methods, not a universal recipe for every cement or mold.

Fill the mold and release trapped air
- Apply any release agent required by the mold and concrete products. Keep it out of the cavity in thick puddles, which can mark the surface.
- Place the mold so its pour opening is accessible and its legs are supported. Pour toward the mold’s lowest point, as Harvard GSD FabLab recommends, allowing the mix to rise and push air toward the vents.
- Fill in shallow layers. After each layer, tap the mold sides or vibrate the support gently to bring bubbles to the surface. Avoid aggressive shaking that could shift the mold or separate thin legs.
- Top up slowly and check that mix has reached the hoof cavities, underbelly and mane. A thin probe can guide material only if it will not damage the mold.
- Strike off the opening and cover the casting as directed by the mix manufacturer.
Demold and cure
The Concrete Society of Southern Africa guide says demolding is usually possible after 24–48 hours, then recommends covering the casting with damp cloths and plastic for at least seven days. Treat both as process guidance, not a guarantee: temperature, humidity, mix chemistry and the thinness of the horse’s legs change the timing. Fragile geometry may need additional days before handling or mounting.
- Wait until the mix is firm enough that a light pressure mark does not deform the surface. If in doubt, wait longer.
- Open the mold along its parting line and flex silicone away from the hooves and mane instead of pulling the casting by a leg.
- Keep the horse supported on a padded surface while it continues curing. Do not test strength by lifting it from one leg.
- Maintain the damp-cloth-and-plastic curing routine recommended for your mix, while preventing standing water from eroding details.
Finishing a cast horse
Leave the concrete natural
After curing, brush away loose particles and inspect for pinholes. Small cosmetic voids can be filled only with a compatible cementitious repair material; structural cracks at legs or the neck are a reason to reject the casting rather than conceal a failure.
Add color
The Concrete Society guide identifies three approaches: integral pigment mixed into the concrete, a surface stain, or paint after curing. Test pigment with the actual cement, sand and aggregate because those materials change the final color. Make a sample tile or small test pour before committing an entire horse to a shade.
Mount or display it safely
A cast horse may need a broad base, concealed armature or separate plinth. Keep the load centered over the support and avoid outdoor placement until the mix manufacturer’s curing and weather guidance has been met. Never use adhesive alone to compensate for a cracked hoof or an unstable, top-heavy pose.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Paint looks flat rather than stone-like | Long brush strokes or too much dark color. | Let it dry, then stipple a thin lighter-gray veil and add only a few darker dabs. |
| Horse pulls away from the plaque | Dirty surfaces, incompatible adhesive or movement during cure. | Clean and dry both surfaces, verify compatibility and respect the adhesive’s full cure time. |
| Concrete mold leaks | Container seam or hot-glue seal is incomplete. | Test with water before mixing cement; reseal and dry the mold completely. |
| Leg cavity will not fill | Mix is too stiff, aggregate is too large or air is trapped. | Use the labeled water ratio, reduce aggregate size within the stated limit, pour toward the low point and tap the mold in layers. |
| Voids appear around mane or belly | Air cannot reach a vent. | Improve vent placement on the next mold and use gentler, longer vibration; do not over-vibrate a delicate mold. |
| Leg breaks during demolding | Early release, severe undercut or excessive pulling force. | Wait longer, open the mold along its parting line and redesign the support or mold split for the next cast. |
| Color differs from the test | Cement, sand or aggregate changed the pigment response. | Test pigment with the exact production materials and record the ratio before the final pour. |
Which route fits your project?
- Pick the painted route when you want a fast, light indoor ornament, already like the pose of a plastic horse, or do not have a ventilated cement-work area.
- Pick the casting route when authentic concrete, substantial weight or repeatable copies matters and you can manage a silicone mold, PPE, dust control and curing time.
- Use a simpler model first if this is your first mold. A blocky animal or geometric form will reveal sealing, mixing and air-release problems without risking a mane and four narrow legs.
In either case, make the support decision early. A painted horse can rely on adhesive at the hooves; a cast horse may require a base designed to protect fragile legs throughout curing, transport and display.
