Make a dried-flower fall wreath by drying flowers and foliage, sorting them into small bundles, wiring the bundles to a grapevine or wire wreath form, and adding a hanger. Air-drying is the simplest approach; silica gel is an optional faster method. Keep the finished wreath away from heat and flames because dried plant material burns easily.
What you need
- Grapevine wreath form or wire wreath frame
- Florist wire
- Pruners or sturdy scissors
- Dried flowers, grasses, seed heads, herbs and pods
- Optional cones, ribbon, jute or other accents
- Optional silica gel and an airtight container
- Rubber bands or twist ties for drying bunches
Iowa State University Extension identifies a box-style wire frame, florist wire and pruners as basic construction supplies. A purchased grapevine form provides a naturally textured, rustic base. You can also make one by winding flexible grape vines into a circle and securing them with jute or wire, as described by University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Choose and harvest flowers for drying
Use flowers and foliage that are clean, undamaged and still have good color. Suitable examples include roses, zinnias, statice, yarrow, rice flowers and hydrangeas. Rosemary, sage, tansy, grasses, pods and seed heads add shape and texture. These examples are included in guidance from UC Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Harvest on a dry day after surface moisture has evaporated. Remove leaves from the lower parts of the stems before making bunches. Air-dried flowers continue to open, so cut them before the blooms are completely open rather than waiting for full maturity. Illinois Extension horticulture educator Martha Smith recommends preserving flowers throughout the season for later decoration.
Choose a drying method

Air-dry the flowers
- Gather a small number of stems into each bunch.
- Secure each bunch with a rubber band or twist tie. Stems shrink as they dry, so a flexible binding helps prevent them from falling out.
- Hang the bunches upside down in a warm, dark, dry, well-ventilated place.
- Keep them out of direct sunlight, which can fade color.
- Allow about two to three weeks. The exact time varies with the plant, stem thickness and room conditions.
Iowa State Extension and UC Agriculture and Natural Resources both give roughly two to three weeks for air-drying and note that this method helps preserve straight stems and flower heads.

Use silica gel for faster drying
- Place the flowers in an airtight container.
- Cover them carefully with silica gel so the desiccant supports and surrounds the blooms.
- Seal the container and leave it undisturbed for about three to seven days.
- Check the flowers before removing them; they should feel dry rather than cool or flexible from retained moisture.
Silica gel is an optional technique rather than a requirement. It is useful when you need flowers ready sooner or want to prioritize color retention.

Choose a grapevine form for an organic outline and built-in texture. Choose a wire frame when you want a more predictable circle and regular attachment points. If making your own grapevine base, wind flexible vines into a circle and secure the crossings with jute or wire.

Once the plant material is dry, sort it into small bundles with the stems pointing in the same direction. Make a few bundles with grasses or foliage for background coverage, and reserve your most distinctive blooms, pods and seed heads for the final layer. Small bundles are easier to position and create a more even overlap than one large handful.
Wire the dried flowers to the frame
- Pick a starting point. Hold the first bundle against the front of the frame, with its stems following the curve.
- Wrap the wire. Feed florist wire through the stems and around the frame. Twist it tightly at the back, leaving the cut ends tucked away.
- Overlap the next bundle. Place the second bundle so it covers the first bundle’s wired stems. Continue around the circle in the same direction.
- Control fullness. Use close spacing for a thick, full wreath. Leave more space between bundles for a flatter design that uses less material.
- Secure accents separately. Wire cones, ribbon, individual seed heads or fragile focal flowers on their own when they need extra support.
- Close the circle. Tuck the final bundle beneath the first bundle, tighten the wire and hide the join on the back.
Florist wire should hold each bundle firmly without crushing brittle stems. If a bundle shifts when gently lifted, add a second wire wrap rather than pulling the first wrap until it cuts through the stems.

Shape the fall design

After the main ring is covered, add the reserved focal blooms and seed heads where the eye needs a visual anchor. Step back several feet and rebalance heavy areas before attaching the last accents. Keep stems oriented consistently unless an intentional fan or spray is part of the design.
Attach the hanger and finish the back
- Twist a length of florist wire around the top of the frame to form a hanging loop.
- Test the loop with the wreath’s weight before placing it on a wall or door.
- Tuck or trim exposed wire ends on the back so they cannot scratch the mounting surface.
- Make a final check for loose stems, pinched flowers and areas where the frame shows more than intended.
Care and safety
Dried plant material is highly flammable. Keep the wreath away from candles, fireplaces, radiators, open flames and hot light fixtures. Martha Smith’s Illinois Extension guidance specifically warns against heat sources and open flames.

Dried flowers become more brittle with age. Move the wreath by its frame rather than by the blooms, and avoid placing it where it will be brushed frequently. UF/IFAS recommends removing dust with a careful whisk using a soft brush.
Outdoor exposure, wreath lifespan and final color retention depend on the frame, plant material, humidity, sunlight and weather. There is no single guaranteed outdoor duration or universal flower count; select the wreath size and amount of material to suit your chosen design and display location.
