You can recreate the look of a sculptural gold-leaf accent with faux leaves, metallic spray paint, scrap wood and marble-look contact paper. The construction is straightforward: paint the leaves, wrap a small wood block, drill a stem-sized hole and glue the stem in place. Lauren of Bless’er House described her version as a roughly 45-minute project and estimated it cost about $65 less than the store-bought sculptures she had seen. Those figures come from her February 24, 2021 tutorial, so treat them as historical estimates rather than current prices or guaranteed timing.

Plan the proportions before you cut or drill
Choose a base that can visually support the leaves
A block around 3 inches square follows Lauren’s example, but the project is intentionally flexible. A taller or fuller faux stem may look better with a wider base, while a small sprig can use a more compact block. The key is visual balance: the base should not look so narrow that the leaves appear ready to tip it over.
Measure the stem, not the drill bit first
The hole must fit the actual faux stem. Compare the stem thickness with your drill bits and choose the closest practical match. A hole that is too small will not accept the stem; one that is too large leaves too much space for glue to bridge. Test the fit against an unpainted scrap or an inconspicuous section of the stem before committing to the wrapped block.
Decide which faces of the block will show
Contact paper is easier to trim when you know which sides will face the room. Place the block so the cleanest marble pattern appears on the front and top. Keep the drilling point centered on the top face unless your composition deliberately calls for an angled stem.
Step-by-step: build the sculpture
1. Prepare the faux leaves
Separate the faux leaves or stem so every surface you want gold is exposed. Remove loose packaging or tags, but do not alter the stem length until you have checked it against the base. Keeping the stem intact makes it easier to test the final height later.

2. Spray both sides with metallic gold paint
Apply the metallic gold spray paint to one side of the faux leaves, then allow that side to dry according to the product label. Turn the leaves over and coat the other side. Painting both faces prevents the original color from showing when the leaves turn or when the sculpture is viewed from behind.
Do not rely on the tutorial’s 45-minute estimate as a drying schedule. The label on the specific paint you use controls recoat and handling times. Keep the stem available for the base step, but avoid handling freshly painted surfaces until the stated drying time has passed.
3. Cut and wrap the wood block
Cut a piece of marble contact paper large enough to cover the block’s faces with a little overlap. Peel the backing gradually and press the adhesive side onto the wood, working around the block rather than dropping the whole sheet at once. At each corner, trim away excess with scissors so the folds do not create bulky ridges.
Press the edges down firmly and inspect every face before drilling. If a corner has a loose flap, trim it now; drilling through a lifted edge can pull the covering away from the wood.
4. Drill the stem opening
Mark the center of the wrapped top face. Drill straight down with the bit selected for the stem thickness. The bit should pass through the contact paper and into the wood far enough to hold the stem securely, but the tutorial does not specify a required depth.

Clear loose paper from the rim of the hole. A clean opening lets the stem sit against the wood instead of resting on a folded piece of contact paper.
5. Glue the stem in place
Put a drop or two of super glue into the hole, then insert the painted stem. Hold it upright while the adhesive sets according to its label. Wipe away any visible excess immediately and avoid shifting the stem until it is stable.
6. Check the final presentation
Set the sculpture on the intended surface and view it from the main angles of the room. Rotate the base so the marble pattern and the most attractive leaf faces are visible. If the stem leans, correct its position while the glue is still workable rather than trying to force it after the adhesive has cured.
How to get a cleaner faux-marble and gold finish
Keep the leaf coating even
Because both sides are visible, inspect the underside as carefully as the top. Missed areas are most noticeable when a leaf twists toward a window or overhead light. If the paint label calls for additional coats, follow that label rather than adding coats on a fixed timetable.
Make the contact-paper corners intentional
The base has simple geometry, so uneven corner folds stand out. Trim excess at the corners in small cuts instead of trying to wrap a large surplus around the entire block. Press seams flat before moving to the next face.

Hide the transition at the stem
Centering the hole gives the stem a finished, designed appearance. If a small gap remains around the stem, check that the drill bit was matched to the stem before adding more adhesive. Enlarging an already oversized hole can make the connection less secure.

The $65 figure is not a current market comparison, and the tutorial does not provide a controlled durability test. The practical trade-off is therefore clear but limited: the DIY offers a customizable visual accent, while the purchased piece is described as heavier and metal.

Lauren reported completing the project in about 45 minutes. That estimate describes her workflow and does not necessarily include every product’s drying or curing time. Your elapsed time will depend on the paint label, adhesive setting time, how carefully you wrap the corners and whether you need to make more than one coat.

Troubleshooting common build problems
The stem will not enter the hole
Check that the drill bit was selected for the stem’s actual thickness and that contact paper has not folded into the opening. Remove loose paper and test the fit again. Enlarge the hole only in small increments; a hole that becomes too wide can leave the stem loose.

The stem wobbles after gluing
A loose fit or insufficient contact between stem and wood is the likely construction issue. Let the adhesive set according to its label before moving the piece. If the hole is visibly oversized, rebuilding the connection with a better-matched bit is more reliable than flooding the opening with excess glue.
The marble covering lifts at a corner
Trim the lifted excess, press the remaining edge flat and avoid placing the block on the loose corner while you work. Cutting smaller corner reliefs during wrapping helps prevent bulky overlaps.

The original leaf color shows through
Turn the stem and inspect the underside. The method requires both sides of the faux leaves to be sprayed, so exposed original color usually indicates an uncoated face or an area that needs another label-approved coat.
The sculpture looks top-heavy
Reconsider the relationship between stem height, leaf volume and block width. The tutorial allows dimensions to vary, so a wider or heavier scrap block can provide a more balanced visual proportion than forcing every design onto a 3-inch square base.
Where to display and how to adapt it
Use the finished piece where a small vertical accent is useful: on a dresser, buffet or tabletop, the three locations named in the tutorial. Place it where the gold can catch light and where the marble pattern is visible from the room’s main approach.
You can adapt the look without changing the basic method by selecting a different faux-leaf silhouette, changing the stem height or choosing another marble contact-paper pattern. Keep the mechanical requirements unchanged: both leaf faces receive paint, the block must accept a centered stem-sized hole, and the stem is fixed with super glue.
