A pencil wreath is an inexpensive, school-themed teacher gift that you can assemble in about 20 minutes using a grapevine wreath, 40 pencils, hot glue, ribbon and scissors. The most straightforward version groups the pencils around the wreath rather than lining them up one by one, creating a full sunburst while leaving the grapevine visible between clusters. The timing and cost are the original tutorial author’s estimates, not a current price guarantee or independent test.
The grapevine pencil wreath design
The design covered here starts with a small grapevine wreath. Pencils are attached in overlapping groups around the circumference, then ribbon is woven through the finished arrangement. The grapevine gives the gift a warm, rustic frame; the yellow pencils provide the instantly recognizable classroom color. The original tutorial also says multicolored pencils can replace yellow ones when you want a brighter or more modern palette. See the complete source method at Sawdust & Paper Scraps.

This is a workable design, not a rigid formula. A wreath with a larger or smaller opening may need a different pencil count, and pencil length, cluster angle and ribbon width all affect the finished coverage. Keep the arrangement slightly irregular if you want a handmade look; align the points more carefully for a graphic, starburst effect.
Materials and preparation
Shopping list for the exact version
- One grapevine wreath form. The tutorial lists a $1 wreath as its example.
- Forty yellow pencils. Multicolored pencils are an alternative suggested by the author.
- A hot-glue gun and enough glue sticks for repeated attachment points.
- Decorative ribbon, such as rickrack.
- Scissors.
The tutorial’s historical estimate was “under $5,” based on a $1 wreath and pencils priced at $1 for ten, with glue and ribbon assumptions. Dollar Store Crafts separately gave a 2013 estimate of about $5 and up, using roughly $4 for pencils and $1 for a wreath form, with glue on hand and ribbon on hand or purchased for about another dollar. Those figures describe the pages’ project assumptions at the time; they are not current retail prices. Compare the original estimates at Sawdust & Paper Scraps and Dollar Store Crafts.

Set up a safe, clean work area
- Cover the table with scrap paper or a silicone mat so stray glue does not bond to the surface.
- Keep the wreath flat while positioning clusters. A shallow box or folded towel can stop it from rocking.
- Place the glue gun on a heat-safe stand when it is not in your hand. Hot glue can burn skin and can damage an unprotected tabletop.
- Decide which side is the front before gluing. Grapevine forms often have a naturally fuller face and a flatter back.
- Test the ribbon path loosely before you attach any pencils. This prevents a dense cluster from blocking the route you planned.
Step-by-step: make the pencil wreath
1. Shape the grapevine base
Inspect the wreath and trim loose curls, long protruding twigs and branches that make the circle difficult to read. The original maker removed excess, messy growth for a cleaner outline but noted that it can remain for a more rustic appearance. Cut only what interferes with pencil placement or catches the ribbon; retaining a few natural branches helps the gift look handmade.
2. Plan the first pencil cluster
Lay several pencils across one section of the wreath without glue. Point the sharpened ends outward and angle the eraser ends toward the center or the back of the vine, depending on the look you prefer. Leave enough of the grapevine exposed to give the eye a visual break between groups. Count the pencils in your trial group, then repeat a similar spacing around the circle.
Do not try to make every pencil radiate from the exact center. Overlapping clusters are the defining feature of this version, and small changes in angle help the wreath fill gaps without forcing the final pencils into an awkward space.
3. Glue groups around the wreath
Lift one trial group while keeping its order. Apply hot glue to the portions of the pencils that will touch the vine, then press the group into place for several seconds. Use more than one contact point when a pencil bridges an uneven branch, but avoid a thick bead that will remain visible from the front. Continue around the wreath, checking after every few groups that the outside edge remains roughly circular.

Work in a consistent direction around the wreath so you can see where the remaining gap will close. If a pencil shifts before the glue sets, reposition it immediately rather than adding a large amount of glue over the top. Let each area cool enough to hold before you rest your hand on it.
4. Tuck in the final pencils
Near the end, there may not be room for a complete new cluster. The original tutorial’s solution is to tuck and weave the final pencils into groups that are already attached. Slide each pencil under or between neighboring pencils, find a firm vine contact point, and glue it there. This closing step hides the join and prevents a conspicuous empty wedge.
5. Inspect and remove glue threads
Turn the wreath slightly and look for loose pencils, exposed glue strings and points that protrude much farther than the rest. Snip cooled glue threads with scissors. If a pencil is unstable, add a small reinforcing dot at the back rather than flooding the visible face with adhesive.
6. Weave and secure the ribbon
Thread the ribbon over and under the pencil groups, following the open spaces in the wreath. Rickrack works well because its narrow profile can pass between pencils, but any ribbon that fits the gaps can be tested. Pull it snug enough to follow the circle without bending the pencil clusters. Once the route looks balanced, glue the ribbon at selected points on the back or on discreet vine sections. The source tutorial uses glue only at chosen points, allowing the ribbon to appear woven instead of coated in adhesive.

7. Add a hanging loop
Use a short length of the same ribbon or sturdy cord on the back of the grapevine to create a hanging loop. Attach it to a substantial vine section, not to a single pencil. Check that the wreath hangs level before the glue fully cools.
How to adjust the design for your teacher
Choose a color story
Yellow pencils give the traditional, old-school classroom appearance described in the original tutorial. Multicolored pencils create a livelier back-to-school gift, especially when the ribbon repeats one of the pencil colors. Keep the base and ribbon neutral if the pencils are already highly varied; with yellow pencils, a bright ribbon can supply the accent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsControl fullness with pencil spacing
Forty pencils is the listed quantity for the grapevine version, but it is not a universal requirement. A larger form, longer pencils or wider spacing may require more; a compact wreath with tightly overlapped clusters may use fewer. Dry-fit all pencils before opening the glue. If the last section looks crowded, remove one pencil from each earlier group and redistribute them rather than forcing a thick final cluster.
Personalize without overloading the wreath
A small name tag, first initial or “Thank you” card can hang from the bottom of the wreath. Keep added weight on the grapevine or hanging loop, not on the pencil tips. If you want a message center, reserve the opening before gluing so the lettering remains readable from a distance.

Alternative pencil-wreath formats
Other published tutorials use different structures. They are useful sources of ideas, but their materials, counts and adhesives should not be swapped into the grapevine method without redesigning the layout.
| Design | Base and arrangement | Published materials or count | Stated time or feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grapevine cluster | Grapevine wreath with pencils in overlapping groups and woven ribbon | 40 pencils, hot glue, ribbon and scissors | About 20 minutes, according to the tutorial author |
| Cardboard sunburst | Cardboard circle with pencils radiating around a central message area | Circle compass, paint-can lid, chalkboard spray paint, permanent glue and a yardstick hanger | Chalkboard center; presented as a back-to-school or teacher-appreciation decoration |
| Wood-ring classroom wreath | Painted wood craft ring with pencils and classroom embellishments | 32 pencils, crayons, alphabet tiles, composition-book cutouts, mini chalkboard and teacher-name personalization | 50–60 minutes, according to the September 13, 2026 tutorial |
| Pencil-and-cork wreath | Cork circles with pencils built in stages after forming a cross | 64 pencils, E6000 adhesive, paper banner, twine, rub-on letters and thumbtacks | Uses a staged cross layout rather than grapevine clusters |
Read the source descriptions for the cardboard, wood-ring and cork approaches at eHow, Oriental Trading and Organize and Decorate Everything. A painted wood ring is easier to keep symmetrical than an irregular grapevine base, while cardboard lets you create a broad message center. Cork-circle construction uses substantially more pencils and a different adhesive, so it is a separate project rather than a shortcut for the 40-pencil version.

Painting and message-center options
If you prefer a painted classroom look, adapt the base before adding pencils. A cardboard circle can be painted with chalkboard spray paint and used as a writing surface, as described in the eHow design. A wood-ring version can be painted in a school color before pencils and embellishments are attached. Allow any painted surface to dry completely and, for spray products, follow the product label’s ventilation and curing directions.
For personalization, write the teacher’s name on a small chalkboard, attach alphabet tiles to the ring, or hang a separate paper banner. The wood-ring tutorial combines those ideas with crayons, composition-book cutouts and a mini chalkboard. Keep lettering large, high-contrast and positioned where pencil points will not obscure it.
Time, cost and gift planning
The grapevine tutorial reports approximately 20 minutes. That estimate assumes the materials are ready and does not include shopping, drying, cleanup or time spent designing a personalized center. The more embellished wood-ring tutorial reports 50 to 60 minutes. Treat both as source-specific descriptions rather than guaranteed completion times.

Budget uncertainty comes mainly from the wreath form, pencil pack size, ribbon and whether you already own a glue gun. Historical pages place comparable projects under $5 or around $5 and up, but prices, pack quantities and local availability change. Decide your budget after counting the pencils required for the chosen base; buying a larger pack can be less expensive per pencil while leaving extras for classroom use.

Pencils keep rotating
The vine may be too narrow at the contact point. Reposition the pencil so it touches a second branch, then add a small rear glue dot after the first bond cools. Avoid relying on one large front-facing blob.
The wreath has a bare section
Do not automatically add a dense new cluster. First loosen neighboring groups and weave one or two pencils into their gaps, following the closing method used in the original tutorial. This usually produces a more even edge.
Ribbon will not stay in place
Choose wider gaps between clusters or a narrower ribbon. Secure it at several discreet points on the back and at turns where gravity pulls it away from the vine. If the ribbon is part of the visual design, hide the attachment points under a pencil or behind a branch.
The wreath hangs crooked
Move the hanging loop to a thicker, more central vine section. Test the balance with the finished ribbon and any name tag attached; accessories can shift the center of gravity.
Glue is visible
Let the glue cool fully, then pull away fine strings. For larger exposed spots, cover the area with a ribbon crossing or reposition the pencil so the vine, rather than the adhesive, faces the viewer. Hot glue is convenient for this lightweight craft, but it can soften in high heat; display the wreath indoors and away from radiators or direct sun.
Choosing the right version
- Choose the grapevine cluster when you want the quickest, lowest-material design with a rustic frame and a simple ribbon finish.
- Choose the cardboard sunburst when a central chalkboard message is more important than a natural wreath texture.
- Choose the painted wood ring when you want a structured classroom theme with a teacher’s name, crayons and alphabet details.
- Choose the cork-circle format when you are comfortable with a larger pencil count, staged construction and a stronger non-hot-glue adhesive.
For most first-time makers, the 40-pencil grapevine arrangement is the practical starting point: it needs few components, allows minor spacing errors to disappear into the clusters and leaves room for a personal ribbon or tag. Make the dry layout first, glue only after the spacing works, and reserve the final pencils for weaving into the installed groups.
