To make a DIY project board, choose a surface for what you need to do: pegboard for hanging lightweight items, cork for pinning notes, a writable finish for reminders, or sheet metal for magnetic display. Measure the wall and plan the layout before cutting or mounting. The right design depends on whether you want a home-office display, a household command center, or flexible storage—not on a universal board size.
Choose the board by what it needs to do
Start with the jobs the board must handle, then choose surfaces and accessories to match. A physical board can organize supplies and reminders; it is different from a digital project board used to coordinate tasks with other people.

Plan the size, layout, and wall location
Measure the available wall area and decide what belongs on the board before cutting materials. Leave room for the board’s edges and for items that project outward, such as hooks or a shelf. If the board will be used while standing or seated, place the writing area where it is comfortable to reach. For a command center, settle the location first; Fiskars specifically recommends doing this before committing to the mount.

Do not treat a tutorial’s dimensions as a standard. Bunnings Australia’s example begins with a 1220 mm × 915 mm × 4.8 mm pegboard sheet and cuts it to 915 mm high by 610 mm wide. Dremel’s US Idea Board is 36 inches by 36 inches, divided into four 18-inch-square sections. Those sizes describe those particular projects, not a recommended size for every room.
Gather materials and prepare safely
Materials depend on the design. A basic pegboard display can use a panel, pine backing, screws, D hooks, and framing wire. A mixed writing-and-magnetic board can use MDF or plywood, chalkboard paint, and sheet metal. A message center may combine a magnetic dry-erase board, cork, shelf, hooks, or magnetic strip. Treat these as project-specific choices rather than a universal shopping list.

- Check that hooks and accessories are intended for your pegboard system; fit is not universal.
- For cutting, drilling, sanding, or painting, follow the tools’ manuals and the product instructions for materials and finishes.
- Dremel advises wearing eye and respiratory protection, clamping work where practical, and wearing gloves when cutting metal. Bunnings also lists safety equipment among its project materials.
- Keep specialty metal-cutting steps out of the plan if you do not need a magnetic section; a single-surface board avoids that fabrication.
Build a pegboard display
This sequence follows Bunnings Australia’s example; its cut dimensions and materials are specific to that project. Adapt the size to your wall and confirm the mounting approach for your board and intended use.
- Cut and frame the panel. Cut the pegboard to the planned size. Bunnings cuts its example to 915 mm high by 610 mm wide, then uses pine lengths as backing and frame.
- Attach the backing. Secure the pine structure so the panel has support behind it. Bunnings fastens the pegboard through existing holes with screws.
- Finish the surface. Sand and paint the panel if desired, following the finish manufacturer’s directions and allowing it to dry before loading it.
- Add the hanging hardware. Fit D hooks and framing wire as in the example, then hang the board from a suitable wall hook. Bunnings advises using a wall hook to prevent the board tipping forward.
- Arrange compatible accessories. Position hooks and other fittings for lightweight items, checking that they fit the panel system and that the board is securely mounted.
Build a mixed-surface idea board
Dremel’s US example combines chalkboard and magnetic areas on a 36-inch-square board divided into four 18-inch-square sections: two are sheet metal and two are chalkboard surface. Its plan uses MDF or plywood as the base, along with sheet metal and chalkboard paint. This is one layout, not a required configuration.

- Lay out the sections. Mark the writing and magnetic areas on the base before cutting. Confirm that the finished board will fit the chosen wall location.
- Prepare the surfaces. Apply chalkboard paint to the designated sections according to its product directions. Cut the sheet metal to fit the remaining areas, wearing gloves for metal cutting as Dremel instructs.
- Drill and attach the metal. Dremel says to drill pilot holes in the sheet metal before screwing it down. Secure it to the base without leaving sharp exposed edges.
- Mount the assembled board securely. The project’s surface layout does not by itself determine a safe wall attachment. Choose mounting hardware for the board, wall, and intended use.
Adapt the design into a message center
A message center usually benefits from defining zones before assembly: one for writing, one for pinned notes, and any remaining space for a calendar or small items. Kreg’s plan attaches a magnetic dry-erase board and cork tiles to a backing; it notes that two cork tiles hold push pins better than one in that design. For hanging, Kreg’s instructions locate two wall studs and drive screws into them.
Fiskars’ command-center example uses a plywood base with a shelf, chalkboard vinyl, corkboard, dowel hooks, and a magnetic strip. The components are optional; choose only the ones that serve your household’s needs, and decide where the completed board will go before finalizing the mount.

Mount and use the board with care
Mounting is part of the design, not an afterthought. The cited examples use different approaches: the Bunnings pegboard has D hooks and framing wire and is hung on a wall hook, while Kreg’s message center uses screws aligned with two wall studs. Follow the instructions for your chosen hardware and wall type; do not assume one tutorial’s method or a panel’s appearance establishes a load rating.

- Before hanging, check that the backing, fasteners, and wall attachment are appropriate for the complete board and its planned contents.
- Keep loads within the limits stated by the relevant board, accessory, and mounting-hardware manufacturers.
- Arrange frequently used items where they are easy to reach, and avoid placing heavy objects where they could fall onto people or fragile items.
When a digital project board is a better fit
If the goal is shared task planning rather than a physical home-office display or storage surface, Microsoft Whiteboard offers project-planning templates, shared notes, and collaboration. Microsoft Support suggests a Daily Stand-up template for everyday tasks or Project kickoff for longer-term goals; users can customize and share a board, then move a settled plan into project-management software. This option supports collaboration, but it does not replace a physical place to hang tools, pin paper, or write household reminders.
