A balloon can give a thin casting-stone shell the rounded bowl shape of a carved planter, while fabric anchors let you add a curved vine handle without drilling the fragile rim. This method follows Michelle’s April 1, 2024 tutorial at A Crafty Mix. It uses casting stone, with white cement or premix/rapid-mix concrete as possible substitutes, and finishes with drainage holes, sealer and small plants.

The important design choice is the handle attachment: embed fabric strips in the wet shell, leave their ends over the rim, then tie those ends through holes in the vine after the planter has dried. The rim is too thin to drill safely, so the fabric carries the connection instead.

What you are making

The finished piece is a rounded, stone-look planter formed over an inflated balloon. The balloon controls both the bowl profile and the size of the opening. A separate curved vine, root or branch becomes the handle. Because the handle is tied to fabric embedded in the shell rather than screwed into the edge, the construction suits a decorative planter whose wall is intentionally thin.

Michelle says she used casting stone for her planter. She also names white cement and premix or rapid-mix concrete as alternatives. Choose one material before mixing and follow that product’s label for water ratio, working time, curing and safety. Her layer thickness and setting times are project estimates, not universal specifications for every cement or casting compound.

Materials and tools

  • A sturdy balloon large enough for the planter you want
  • A bowl or other support that holds the inflated balloon steady
  • Casting stone, or a selected white-cement or premix/rapid-mix concrete product
  • Water and a mixing bowl
  • A marker
  • Wet wipes or thin fabric for texture and handling
  • Scrap fabric for the handle anchors
  • Water-based glue, if you use the tutorial’s reinforcing step
  • A strong, naturally curved vine, root or branch
  • A drill and a bit suitable for making holes in the vine
  • Small tools for mixing and spreading
  • Fine garden soil, sifted, for the natural surface effect
  • Sealer compatible with the selected casting material
  • Two or three small drainage holes’ worth of planting soil and plants

Do not substitute plaster of Paris for a water-exposed planter. Michelle specifically says it will disintegrate when wet. Keep the casting product’s safety directions, including dust and skin protection, in view while you work.

Plan the opening and balloon shape

Mark the rim before applying material

Inflate the balloon and place it in the supporting bowl. Use the marker to draw the opening line around the balloon. The line’s position determines how much of the balloon is covered and therefore how deep the finished bowl will be: a line nearer the knot produces a deeper planter, according to Michelle’s tutorial.

Make the mark continuous and easy to see. Check that the balloon is sitting level in the bowl before you start; an uneven support can give the rim an unintended tilt. The balloon is a mold only, so it does not need to be perfectly spherical, but avoid soft spots or a balloon that is close to bursting.

Choose the vine before the shell cures

Dry-fit the curved vine beside the balloon and decide where its two ends will meet the rim. This lets you place the fabric anchors where the handle will naturally pull instead of discovering after curing that the vine sits too high or too low. Michelle sourced wild vines from Namibian Hardwood and also suggests asking a local forestry department or specialist reptile shops for dried roots and vines; those are location-specific suggestions, not universal suppliers.

Mix and apply the stone shell

Prepare the casting material

Mix the casting stone, cement or premix according to its manufacturer’s instructions. The tutorial gives an approximately 1 cm layer (also described on the page as 1/2 inch), but your product may require a different consistency or thickness. Add water gradually and mix until the material can be spread over the balloon without running off.

Work in manageable batches. Casting products can begin to set quickly; Michelle reports about 10 minutes for one casting-stone step and gives 15–20 minutes in the tutorial’s FAQ. Those figures describe her project, not a guaranteed pot life. Temperature, humidity, batch size and the selected product all change the timing.

Build the first layers

  1. Spread the first layer over the balloon below the marked opening. Keep the material off the opening line so the rim remains clear and recognizable.
  2. Apply additional material in layers, aiming for the thickness recommended by your product. Smooth obvious ridges, but do not repeatedly disturb a layer that is beginning to stiffen.
  3. If you want the tutorial’s reinforcement step, use water-based glue with strips of thin fabric, then cover those strips with another layer of casting material. The fabric helps reinforce the shell; it is not the handle anchor unless you deliberately leave the separate anchor ends projecting over the rim.

Support the balloon throughout. A heavy wet patch can make it roll or deform, changing the opening. If a layer needs to cure before the next one, wait for the product’s stated interval rather than relying on the tutorial’s weekend schedule.

Embed the fabric anchors for the handle

Place the strips while the shell is wet

Cut two strong scrap-fabric strips long enough to cross the rim and leave several centimetres extending outside it. Lay one strip at each planned handle attachment point. Press the inner portion into the wet shell and leave the outer ends visible beyond the rim. Protect those projecting ends while you apply more casting material so they do not become buried or coated in stone.

Cover the embedded portions with another layer and blend the surface around them. The fabric should be locked into the shell, while the free ends remain flexible enough to thread through the vine later. Do not try to drill the planter edge for the handle; Michelle’s reason for this method is that the edge is too thin to drill safely.

Let the shell dry before stressing the anchors

Set the supported balloon aside until the selected material has dried or cured as directed. Michelle made her example over a weekend, but cement may take longer because each layer needs to cure before another is added. A dry surface is not automatically fully cured, so use the product instructions when deciding when it can be drilled, tied or filled.

Remove the balloon and repair the inside

  1. When the shell is dry enough for demolding, release or pop the balloon and pull it out through the opening.
  2. Inspect the inside, especially around the rim and the fabric anchors. Michelle patches inside cracks before finishing the planter.
  3. Use the same compatible material, or the repair compound specified by your product, to fill small cracks. Allow repairs to dry before drilling or sealing.

A thin decorative shell can chip if forced. If the balloon sticks, work gradually around the opening rather than levering against one section of the rim.

Prepare and attach the vine handle

Drill the vine, not the planter

Trim loose bark or sharp splinters from the vine and hold it against the planter to confirm the final curve. Drill a hole through each vine end, large enough for the projecting fabric to pass through without tearing it. The tutorial describes drilling holes in the vine ends and threading the fabric through them.

Thread and tie the anchors

  1. Pass each free fabric end through the corresponding hole in the vine.
  2. Pull the vine close to the rim while keeping the load balanced on both sides.
  3. Tie the fabric securely against the vine. Keep the knot accessible for inspection, and trim excess fabric only after the connection is tight.
  4. Lift the empty planter a short distance to check that the handle does not twist the rim. If it pulls unevenly, retie before adding soil.

Michelle initially considered leaving the vine long and later trimmed one end for a more balanced appearance. Treat that as a visual decision: make both ends comfortable to handle and proportionate to your bowl.

Create a natural stone finish

For the tutorial’s mottled, earthy surface, sift garden soil and mix some into a final batch of casting stone. Rub or spread that mixture over the outside while it is workable. Varying the coverage changes how much of the stone color remains visible. Keep the opening and drainage area clear.

Allow the finish to dry or cure fully. Then inspect for loose grains, fragile edges and cracks. A sealer can reduce water absorption and protect the surface, but compatibility matters: use a sealer labeled for your chosen cement or casting material and follow its recoat and curing directions.

Drill drainage holes, seal and plant

  1. Turn the empty planter over and drill two or three small holes in the bottom, as Michelle recommends. Use steady pressure and support the shell so the drill does not catch and crack it.
  2. Remove drilling dust and check that each hole is open all the way through.
  3. Apply the selected sealer according to its label, including any required drying time before contact with water or soil.
  4. Add a well-draining planting mix and choose plants suited to the planter’s size and your climate.

Michelle’s example uses houseleeks and Portulacaria afra, commonly called spekboom. Those plants are an example, not a universal planting prescription; match the plant to available light, watering habits and local conditions.

Outdoor use and cold-weather limits

The tutorial’s outdoor-use answer says casting stone and cement can handle varied weather, but Michelle immediately qualifies that view: she lives in South Africa and does not know how casting stone performs through freezing winters. A commenter raises frost and harsh winter rain, and Michelle agrees that bringing the planter indoors during winter is prudent.

That limitation is important because freeze-thaw cycles can turn absorbed water into expanding ice and damage a porous shell. Before leaving your planter outside, check the exact product label for exterior and freeze-thaw suitability, use the recommended sealer, keep drainage holes open and consider sheltered placement. If your region freezes, move the planter indoors or into a protected area for winter rather than treating the tutorial as a guarantee for every product and climate.

Common decisions and troubleshooting

Question or symptom Practical response
The planter is too shallow On the balloon, a rim line farther from the knot leaves less depth. For a deeper bowl, Michelle says to mark nearer the knot before applying the shell.
The shell cracks inside After demolding, patch the crack with a compatible repair material and let it cure before drilling, sealing or planting.
The handle wants to pull out Check that the fabric was embedded deeply enough and that the vine holes are smooth. Retie with the planter empty; do not drill the thin rim.
The balloon changes shape Use a stable bowl and avoid concentrating a heavy wet batch on one side. Apply layers evenly.
You want to paint it The source does not establish a universal paint system. Let the shell and sealer cure, then use only a coating labeled as compatible with your material and intended exposure; test a hidden area first.
You need to know the finished weight No measured weight is given. It depends on balloon size, shell thickness, material density, moisture and the amount of soil and plant added, so lift and test the empty planter before installing the handle permanently.

How long the project takes

Michelle says she made the example over a weekend. Her page mentions roughly 10 minutes for one casting-stone step and 15–20 minutes in an FAQ, while noting that cement can take longer because successive layers must cure. Those are author-reported estimates. Plan around the selected product’s working and curing instructions, plus drying time for repairs, the natural finish, sealer and planting.

Key safety and durability checks

  • Use the selected product’s mix ratio and cure schedule instead of treating the tutorial’s estimates as specifications.
  • Wear the protection required for cementitious dust and wet material.
  • Keep fabric anchors covered while adding shell material, but leave their ends free.
  • Drill the vine, not the fragile planter rim.
  • Confirm that drainage holes are open before adding soil.
  • Use a compatible sealer and respect its curing time.
  • For freezing climates, verify exterior and freeze-thaw suitability or store the planter indoors in winter.

With those checks in place, the balloon gives you a repeatable bowl form, the embedded fabric solves the thin-rim problem, and the vine supplies a handle that looks grown into the stone rather than bolted on.
