A pool noodle makes a light, inexpensive foam wreath base. For the strongest documented version, shape straightened wire into a circle or heart, wrap the noodle around that frame, tape the seam, cover the foam with fabric, and glue on lightweight faux greenery and flowers. You can also bend the noodle into a ring and join its ends, but that construction relies on the taped and glued seam rather than an internal support.

Choose the right pool-noodle wreath construction
There are two practical ways to turn a noodle into a wreath. Your choice affects the shape, how much reinforcement you need, and the kinds of decorations the base can comfortably carry. No published load, weather-resistance, or longevity tests establish that one method lasts a particular number of seasons, so treat the comparison as a construction guide rather than a performance rating.

| Internal wire frame | Straighten wire hangers, form a circle or heart, cut the noodle lengthwise, wrap it around the wire, and tape the cut side closed. | Defined circles, hearts, and other outlines that need a firm shape. | Requires wire straightening, shaping, and snips; the foam must be cut lengthwise. |
| Joined noodle ring | Bend the noodle into a loop, join the two ends with hot glue, hold the joint for about three to five minutes, and reinforce it with duct tape or cloth tape. | A quick round wreath when you do not need a separate frame. | The seam is the structural connection, so decoration and handling should be kept light and the joint carefully reinforced. |
The internal-wire approach is the exact method shown in the Bless’er House pool-noodle wreath tutorial. The end-joining approach is documented in Armacell’s nautical wreath instructions and Bunnings Australia’s pool-noodle decoration guide.

Supplies and tools
Gather the base materials before cutting the foam. Exact quantities depend on the noodle length, the wreath diameter, and how densely you decorate, so the instructions below deliberately avoid a made-up material count.
For the wire-supported wreath
- One pool noodle.
- Wire hangers or comparable sturdy craft wire.
- Wire snips or pliers that can cut and bend the wire.
- Duct tape for closing the lengthwise cut and securing the ends.
- Fabric scraps to cover the foam.
- A hot-glue gun and glue sticks.
- Artificial greenery and flower stems.
- A hook, ribbon, or twine for hanging.
- A wooden paint stirrer or spoon for pressing glued stems while the adhesive cools.
For a joined-end ring
- Pool noodle.
- Hot-glue gun and glue sticks.
- Duct tape or cloth tape for seam reinforcement.
- Ribbon, twine, burlap, jute webbing, or fabric for the covering.
- Lightweight greenery, flowers, ornaments, or other decorations.
- Wire or ribbon for a hanging loop.
Use supplies you already own where possible. The documented methods do not require a particular brand, noodle color, glue-gun model, or decorative style.
Safety before you start
Wire, knives or snips, and hot glue can all cause injuries. Wear eye protection when cutting or manipulating wire; Bunnings specifically recommends safety goggles for related pool-noodle decoration work. Keep fingers away from fresh glue. The Bless’er House method uses a wooden paint stirrer or spoon to press stems into place while the glue cools, which gives you a nonconductive handle between your hand and the adhesive.

Armacell’s ornament-wreath instructions state: “Caution: Always use care with hot and sharp objects. This craft activity is not recommended for kids.” That warning applies to the ornament-heavy project on that page, not automatically to every pool-noodle wreath. If children are involved in any version, an adult should handle cutting, wire, and the glue gun. For ornaments, that same page advises using the coolest glue-gun setting that will hold the decoration.
Method 1: build the wire-supported base
1. Straighten and shape the wire
Untwist or straighten the wire hangers as much as practical. Join or overlap pieces if needed, then bend the wire into a circle, heart, or another outline. Work slowly around the curve so the frame does not develop sharp kinks. The outline you make now determines the finished wreath’s silhouette, because the noodle will follow it.

2. Cut the noodle lengthwise
Make one continuous cut along the noodle’s length. The cut should open the foam enough to receive the wire without tearing the noodle into separate pieces. Support the foam on a stable work surface, keep the cutting hand moving away from your body, and avoid compressing the noodle while cutting.
3. Wrap the foam around the frame
Open the cut and press the shaped wire inside the noodle. Follow the wire all the way around, checking that it remains centered rather than riding against one edge. A centered frame keeps the outer surface more even when you add the covering.
4. Close and reinforce the cut
Use duct tape along the cut side to hold the foam closed over the wire. Tape the noodle ends in place as well. Press each strip firmly onto clean, dry foam. If the tape lifts at a bend, add another short strip rather than stretching one long piece until it wrinkles.
Method 2: make a ring by joining the noodle ends
1. Form the loop
Curve the noodle into a circle without sharply creasing the foam. Bring the two ends together and check the ring’s size before applying adhesive. This approach does not use the internal wire frame described above.
2. Glue and hold the seam
Apply hot glue to the meeting ends, press them together, and hold the joint for about three to five minutes, as specified in Armacell’s instructions. Allow the adhesive to set before moving the ring. Add duct tape or cloth tape over and around the seam for extra reinforcement; Bunnings also documents joining noodle ends with tape.

3. Inspect the connection
Flex the ring gently. If the seam opens, add more tape and adhesive before covering it. Do not treat a loose joint as finished simply because a decorative wrap will hide it. Since this method concentrates the connection at one point, avoid planning a heavy cluster of decorations directly on the seam.

A covering hides the noodle’s texture, protects the foam from routine handling, and sets the wreath’s visual direction. The covering does not have to be fabric: the documented projects use fabric scraps, alternating ribbon and twine, and webbing or jute.
Fabric-wrap finish
Cut or tear fabric scraps into manageable strips. Starting at a less visible area, overlap the strips as you wrap around the foam. Secure the beginning, overlap, and end with hot glue. Keep the tension even: pulling too tightly can expose the cut seam or distort a soft foam ring, while loose fabric creates ridges that make later gluing less predictable.
Ribbon, twine, or webbing finish
For a nautical, rustic, or seasonal look, wrap ribbon, twine, burlap, or jute webbing around the ring. Armacell describes alternating ribbons and twine; Bunnings covers its ring with webbing. You can use one material for a clean band or alternate widths and textures. Secure the first and last turns with hot glue, and add small glue points around the back rather than covering the visible front with adhesive.
Add flowers and greenery
Prepare the stems
Trim artificial flower and greenery stems to the length needed for your design. Shorter stems sit close to the base and are easier to control; longer stems create a fuller profile but put more leverage on the glue bond. Dry-fit the pieces around the wreath before gluing so you can adjust spacing and direction.

Build the arrangement
Start with the largest or most directional pieces, then fill gaps with smaller leaves and flowers. Place the visual weight where you want it before permanently attaching anything. For a balanced circle, repeat colors or leaf shapes around the ring. For a one-sided swag, concentrate the stems on one arc and leave the rest of the covering visible.
Glue without burning your fingers
Apply hot glue to the stem or to the covered base, press the piece into position, and hold it with a wooden paint stirrer or spoon while the glue cools. Let each connection firm up before adding a neighboring stem that could pull it loose. Keep the glue gun on a protected surface between applications.
Finish the back and add a hanger
Turn the wreath over and remove loose glue strings. Check that no wire end or sharp tape edge protrudes. Add a hanging loop made from ribbon, twine, or wire at a point that keeps the wreath level. A lightweight wreath can hang from a suitable wall hook; choose a hook appropriate for the wall surface and the finished wreath’s actual weight.
Test the hanger close to the floor or over a table first. Lift the wreath by the loop, rotate it gently, and inspect the seam, covering, and glued stems. Reinforce any movement before putting it on a door or wall.
Design choices that work with the foam base
| Look | Covering | Decoration approach |
|---|---|---|
| Natural or rustic | Burlap, jute webbing, twine, or neutral fabric. | Artificial ivy, greenery, dried-look stems, and a small flower cluster. |
| Colorful seasonal | Contrasting fabric scraps or alternating ribbons. | Grouped faux flowers in repeated colors, with greenery used to soften gaps. |
| Nautical | Alternating ribbon and twine, as shown in Armacell’s instructions. | Lightweight themed ornaments or simple greenery attached with glue. |
| Minimal | One continuous ribbon or a plain fabric wrap. | A single asymmetrical greenery spray and a discreet hanging loop. |
Lights are an optional finish in Bunnings’ seasonal instructions. If you add them, keep the strand light, avoid trapping hot components against the foam, and secure the battery pack or plug so it does not pull on the wreath.

Troubleshoot common problems
The foam keeps opening along the cut
Clean the cut edges, bring them together in short sections, and add overlapping duct-tape strips. On a wire-supported wreath, check that the wire is fully inside the channel rather than forcing one edge outward.
The joined seam separates
Remove any loose covering around the joint, reapply hot glue, hold the ends together for the full three to five minutes, and add tape over the seam after the glue sets. Let it cool completely before wrapping.
Fabric slips or bunches
Use shorter overlapping strips, apply glue at the start and end of each section, and keep the wrap tension consistent. On curves, small overlaps are easier to control than one wide piece folded around the bend.

Stems fall off
Trim away excess stem, expose a clean attachment point, and glue to the covered base rather than to loose fabric. Hold the stem with the wooden tool until the adhesive cools, then leave the wreath undisturbed while the remaining pieces set.
The wreath hangs crooked
Move the hanging loop toward the center of gravity. If decorations are concentrated on one side, either shift the loop or add a small balancing piece on the opposite side. Test the wreath again before final hanging.
Indoor, sheltered, and outdoor placement
These instructions establish how to assemble the wreath, not how long it will survive outdoors. Pool-noodle foam, fabric, tape, glue, and artificial decorations can respond differently to rain, sun, heat, and freezing temperatures, and the cited sources provide no comparative weather or longevity measurements. For an outdoor display, place the wreath in a sheltered location and inspect the tape, seam, covering, and glue joints regularly. Bring it inside if the materials begin to loosen or deteriorate.
Which method should you use?
- Choose the wire-supported method when you want a heart shape, a custom outline, or a base that keeps its geometry while you work. It has more preparation steps but places a shaped wire inside the foam.
- Choose the joined-end method when a simple circle is enough and you prefer not to cut the noodle lengthwise or build a wire frame. Spend extra time on the glued and taped seam.
- Choose fabric when you want a smooth, colorful background for flowers.
- Choose ribbon, twine, burlap, or webbing when the wrap itself should provide texture or a rustic and nautical character.
- Keep decorations lightweight in either construction, especially near a joined seam, because no source establishes a tested load capacity.
