To make a balanced flower arrangement, start with a clean, proportionate container; prepare and hydrate the stems; create support; then add greenery, focal flowers and fillers in layers. Clean water, flower preservative and daily maintenance help keep it presentable. You do not need floral foam: crossed stems, a tape grid or a reusable floral frog can also hold stems in place.

Choose a vessel and a design
Almost any clean, water-holding container can work. Choose one that suits the scale and shape of your flowers, and let it complement rather than compete with them. A low, oblong dish suits a short, wide centerpiece; a tall bottle or vase works for an upright display. Straight-sided vases generally support stems better than flared openings.
Think about line, space, texture, pattern, form, color and size. Use proportion to make the flowers and vessel feel related, and visual balance so the arrangement does not seem to lean. Decide which blooms will be the focal point, then use greenery to define the outline and smaller flowers or accents to fill gaps.

Gather supplies and choose stem support
- A clean water-holding vessel and fresh water
- Commercial floral preservative, used according to its label
- Clean, sharp pruning shears or floral snips
- Greenery, focal flowers and filler flowers or small accents
- Optional support: crossed stems, waterproof floral tape, a floral frog or floral foam
Choose support based on the vessel opening and how much control you need. Crossing stems is simple; a tape grid is adaptable; a floral frog is reusable and holds stems at specific points. Absorbent floral foam can anchor precise placements, but it is single-use and cannot be composted. It is an option, not a requirement.
Prepare flowers before arranging
If using flowers from your garden, cut them with clean, sharp shears or a knife so stems are not crushed. Harvesting near sunrise is useful because flowers are generally well hydrated then; put cut stems into water promptly. Harvest stage depends on the flower: many are picked as they begin to show color, but roses and dahlias may not develop fully if cut in tight bud, and spike flowers have different timing. The Royal Horticultural Society’s conditioning guidance explains these differences.

Remove leaves from the lower half to two-thirds of each stem as a general preparation step, especially any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Recut stem ends with a sharp tool and place the prepared flowers in water. If time allows, condition them in a cool place for at least two to three hours, or ideally overnight, before arranging.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor flowers that will not be arranged right away, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends storage at 40–60°F for short periods, or 33–35°F for storage longer than a day or two. Do not freeze them. Some species, including flowers with sap-bearing or woody stems, may need special handling, so check guidance for the specific flower rather than applying one treatment to all stems.

Build the arrangement in layers
- Prepare the vase. Wash it, add fresh water and commercial floral preservative according to its directions, then recut stems before placing them.
- Set the support. Cross stems inside the vessel, fit a floral frog, or secure a waterproof tape grid across the opening.
- Add greenery. Establish the shape and a supportive base with foliage before adding flowers.
- Place focal flowers. Arrange the most prominent blooms with attention to proportion and balance. Step back or turn the vessel as you work to spot gaps or a lopsided outline.
- Fill and finish. Add smaller flowers and accents where needed. Conceal tape, foam or other mechanics with foliage, fillers or suitable decorative material.
For a hand-tied bouquet
Hold the first stems loosely, add greenery around the outside, then place the focal flowers. Continue adding stems one at a time at a gentle spiral angle, turning the bouquet as you work so it looks balanced from all sides. Trim the base level before setting the bouquet in a vase.

- Start clean. Wash the vase with hot, soapy water. Remove leaves below the waterline because submerged foliage decays, discolors the water and can interfere with water uptake.
- Refresh the stem ends. Recut ½ to 1 inch from the bottom of each stem with a sharp tool, then place flowers into the vase promptly.
- Use flower food as directed. Add commercial floral preservative according to its label. Iowa State advises against homemade substitutes such as sugar, aspirin, tea, bleach and pennies; some may shorten vase life.
- Check water daily. Top it off as needed. Replace it if it becomes cloudy or smells, and recut stems if possible when changing the water.
- Choose a suitable spot. Keep the arrangement in a cool, bright location away from heat sources and drafts. Remove fading blooms as needed.
See Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s cut-flower care guidance for the water and stem-care recommendations. Its harvesting and conditioning guide, reviewed January 2025, covers garden-grown flowers and storage.
