To make a flower arrangement, use a clean, water-holding container, prepare the stems, and build the design in layers: greenery first, then focal flowers, secondary blooms, and filler. Adjust the heights and spacing for balance, and keep the water clean while the flowers are on display.

What you need

  • Fresh flowers in good condition, plus greenery and optional filler
  • A clean, watertight vase or other suitable container
  • Clean, sharp floral snips, pruning shears, or a knife
  • Fresh water and commercial floral preservative
  • Optional stem supports, such as a floral frog, waterproof floral tape grid, wire, or floral foam

Almost any container can work if it holds water. Choose one that suits the design and keeps attention on the flowers. A low container suits a compact design; a taller vase can support an upright arrangement.

Understand the four types of material

Sort your flowers and greenery into these functional groups:

  1. Focal flowers: the larger or visually prominent blooms.
  2. Secondary flowers: medium-sized blooms that connect the focal flowers and add fullness.
  3. Filler: smaller or airy flowers that soften open areas.
  4. Greenery or line material: leaves, branches, grasses, or tall stems that establish the outline and movement.

You do not need a fixed number of stems from each group. The right amount depends on the flowers and the container.

Step 1: Choose flowers and decide how the arrangement will be viewed

Choose fresh-looking stems without obvious wilting, broken stems, or extensive browning. Decide whether the arrangement will be viewed from all sides or mainly from the front; this will guide where you place the strongest focal flowers and greenery.

Step 2: Clean the container and prepare the water

  1. Wash the container with hot, soapy water and rinse it thoroughly.
  2. Fill it with fresh water.
  3. Add commercial floral preservative according to the package directions.

Iowa State University Extension recommends following the preservative label and keeping the container clean. Remove leaves that would sit below the waterline, since submerged foliage decays and contributes to cloudy water. Iowa State University Extension’s floral-arrangement guide explains container preparation and stem support options.

Step 3: Prepare the stems

  1. Remove leaves that would be below the waterline, along with damaged foliage.
  2. Make a fresh cut on each stem with a clean, sharp tool; avoid crushing the stem.
  3. Place prepared stems in water while you work.

Fresh cuts and clean tools help stems take up water. University of Florida IFAS Cut Flower Care also recommends trimming stems with a clean knife or clippers and replacing cloudy solution.

Step 4: Choose a support method

Support is optional for a simple vase arrangement, but it can help keep stems in place. Choose a method suited to your container and desired design:

Method Useful for Considerations
Crossed stems A straightforward vase arrangement Stems support one another naturally; positioning is less controlled than with a holder.
Floral frog or waterproof tape grid Holding stems in position, including in some shallow containers These are optional mechanics; conceal them with foliage or flowers.
Floral foam Designs that need stems held in precise positions Let foam sink naturally in water rather than forcing it under. Iowa State Extension describes it as single-use and not compostable.

For many beginner vase arrangements, crossed stems are enough. If you use foam, Iowa State University Extension advises letting it absorb water naturally and avoiding repeated stem removal, which can loosen it.

Step 5: Make a greenery base

Add greenery first to establish the arrangement’s outline and give the other stems support. Cross stems in the container and vary their angles and heights. Missouri Extension’s sample beginner arrangement starts with six to eight greenery stems, but that is a guide for its example, not a rule for every container. University of Missouri Extension’s cut-flower guidance provides that example.

Step 6: Add focal flowers

Add the larger or most prominent blooms, varying their heights to give the arrangement shape. Judge the stem length against the container as you work. Turn the container as needed so the design looks balanced from the angles where it will be seen.

Step 7: Add secondary flowers and filler

Use smaller supporting blooms to connect the focal flowers, then add filler to soften gaps and add texture. Leave enough space for individual flowers to remain visible rather than filling every opening.

Step 8: Check balance and finish

  1. Turn the container and inspect it from the intended viewing angles.
  2. Adjust stem positions and heights to make the design feel balanced.
  3. Conceal any tape, frog, foam, or other mechanics with foliage or flowers.
  4. Check that no leaves sit below the waterline.

Alternative: make a hand-tied bouquet

For a bouquet shape, assemble the stems in your hand instead of arranging them directly in the vase. Start with a few stems, add greenery around the outside, then add focal flowers and other blooms one at a time at a gentle spiral angle, turning the bundle as you work. Finish with filler, trim the base evenly, and place the bouquet in water. Iowa State University Extension describes this as an alternative arrangement method.

Care for the finished arrangement

  1. Keep the arrangement cool and away from direct sun, heat, and drafts.
  2. Check the water daily and top it up as needed.
  3. Replace the solution if it becomes cloudy or smells, and use fresh preservative according to its label.
  4. Remove fading flowers and any foliage that ends up below the waterline.

Iowa State University Extension recommends checking water daily and topping it up or replacing it if cloudy or odorous. University of Florida IFAS likewise advises replacing cloudy solution. Flower handling can vary by species, so follow any species-specific instructions for particular stems.

Common problems and fixes

Flowers droop soon after arranging

Check whether the stems were freshly cut with a clean, sharp tool and placed in water promptly. Recut stems if needed, replenish or replace the water, and remove any submerged foliage.

The water turns cloudy or smells bad

Wash the container, replace the water and preservative solution, and remove leaves below the waterline. Recut stems if practical.

The arrangement looks flat or unbalanced

Vary the stem heights and angles, and turn the container to inspect it from the intended viewing sides. Adjust the greenery and flowers to create a clear outline and balanced placement.

The stems keep falling outward

Cross the stems to create a loose support structure, or try a floral frog or waterproof tape grid. Foam is another option for designs needing precise positioning, but it is not required for every arrangement.
