Make a small gable-top gift box from one 8 1/2 × 11-inch sheet of cardstock. This hand-cut pattern uses six score lines, simple cuts to form the base flaps, and a glued side seam. Follow the measurements carefully; the handle and decoration are optional.

Choose a hand-cut pattern or a digital template

The hand-cut method below needs cardstock, a scoring tool, scissors, and strong adhesive. It suits a one-off box when you can measure and cut the panels by hand. A digital template is another option if you have a suitable file and a cutting machine; its cut and score paths can make repeated cuts easier to follow. Neither method has established time, cost, accuracy, or durability advantages over the other.

The measurements below belong to the hand-cut pattern. Do not combine them with dimensions or material recommendations from a different template. For example, one downloadable design provider lists small and large boxes as 3 × 2 × 3 inches and 4 × 2.5 × 4.5 inches, respectively, plus the handle; those are dimensions for its own designs, not this pattern (digital template source).

Gather the materials and tools

  • One 8 1/2 × 11-inch sheet of cardstock
  • A paper cutter or ruler and scissors
  • A scoring tool or scoring board
  • Strong craft adhesive or double-sided adhesive
  • Optional: a wide oval punch, corner rounder, ribbon, stamps, ink, or other embellishments

A separate template provider recommends 65–110 lb cardstock for its own designs; another project author recommends 80 lb cardstock for a shaker-style box. Those suggestions apply to those projects, not as tested requirements for the hand-cut pattern here.

Score the cardstock

  1. Place the 11-inch edge horizontally. Score from the edge at 1/2, 3 1/2, 5 3/4, and 8 3/4 inches.
  2. Turn the sheet so the 8 1/2-inch edge is horizontal. Score at 3 and 6 1/2 inches.
  3. Keep the score lines light. They mark fold locations; do not fold the panels yet.

These measurements divide the sheet into the box panels, side tab, and flaps. Accurate placement matters because the score lines define how the pieces will meet when assembled.

Decorate and cut the flaps

  1. If you want to stamp or decorate the cardstock, do so before assembly. One option is to fold the short scored section underneath temporarily so you can work on the exposed panel.
  2. At the intersections of the score lines, cut along the lines that form the bottom flaps, stopping at each crossing score line. Do not cut through the intersections or remove the bottom as one piece; the separated flaps fold together to make the base.
  3. On the edge divided into half-inch flaps, cut away the two end flaps and leave the center flap in place.

Punch an optional handle

For the handle used in this design, center a wide oval punch over the appropriate panel and punch through the cardstock. A corner rounder can soften the ends of the oval opening if desired. The handle is a finishing choice for this pattern, not a required feature of every gable box.

Join the seam and form the base

  1. Apply strong adhesive to the half-inch side tab and the flaps that will secure the base. If using adhesive strips with a release liner, leave the liner on until you are ready to position each piece.
  2. Bring the side panels together and align their edges squarely. Press the adhesive tab against the opposite panel to close the side seam.
  3. Fold the bottom flaps into place and adhere them to form the base. Check that the panels meet squarely before the adhesive sets.

Close the gable top

Fold the top panels along their score lines and close the gable using the flap orientation for the pattern. Add ribbon or other embellishments if you like. If you are following a visual version of the hand-cut pattern, use its step images to confirm which top flaps fold over or tuck together; the measurements alone do not establish a universal closure for other box designs.

Using a digital cutting template instead

A digital-template workflow uses separate cut and score paths. Open a template made for your chosen box design, cut and score the cardstock according to that file, fold the scored lines, and glue the side seam. The top and bottom flaps then tuck closed. An alternate shaker-style project is available in SVG, DXF, PDF, and PNG formats and describes both hand cutting with scissors and a craft knife and machine cutting (project source). Follow the dimensions, material guidance, and assembly layout supplied for the specific file rather than applying the hand-cut measurements in this guide.

What this box is—and is not—suited for

This is a paper-craft project, not a structurally tested container. The available pattern instructions do not establish a safe carrying capacity, moisture resistance, or suitability for direct food contact. Avoid relying on it for heavy items or placing unwrapped food directly inside; a separate suitable food-contact liner would be needed for that use.
