Yes—you can turn ordinary wrapping paper into a gift bag in a few minutes. You will make a paper tube, secure an overlapping side seam, fold the lower section into a reinforced diamond-shaped base, then fold or tie the top closed. The method is especially useful for awkwardly shaped presents or when you have wrapping paper but no gift bag.
Use medium-weight paper when possible, and reinforce the bottom with cardboard if the gift is moderately heavy. This homemade bag is best for lightweight to moderate presents; there is no standardized load rating, so do not rely on it for very heavy or unusually tall items.
What you need
- Wrapping paper: medium-weight paper is the best compromise between strength and easy folding. Very thin paper can tear at the bottom.
- Scissors: ordinary sharp scissors are sufficient for cutting and trimming.
- Tape: gift-wrap tape or regular sticky tape. Double-sided tape gives a cleaner hidden seam.
- Optional: a single-hole punch, ribbon, a gift tag, stickers or washi tape.
- Optional reinforcement: a piece of cardstock or thin cardboard for the base.
If you need supplies, medium-weight wrapping paper, gift-wrap tape, and sharp scissors for wrapping paper are the most useful choices. You do not need specialty paper or a commercial bag-making kit.

For a clean visible finish, gift-wrap tape is designed to blend with wrapping paper; double-sided tape can hide the adhesive edge. See 3M’s gift-wrapping guidance for the distinction between these tape types.
How much wrapping paper do you need?
There is no single formula that works for every present. The sheet must be wide enough to surround the gift, overlap at the side seam, and leave room for the bag’s side folds. It also needs extra paper above and below the gift for the top closure and bottom gusset.

As a practical starting point, use a rectangular sheet a little more than twice the finished bag width. For height, measure the gift from bottom to top and add approximately 20 centimeters, adjusting upward if you want a deeper base or a taller folded top. Another useful check is to wrap the paper loosely around the gift before cutting and leave roughly an inch of clearance on each side so the item is not forced into the finished bag. These are starting points, not rigid measurements; the gift’s width, depth and height determine the final size. The tutorials at Curbly and Gathered both emphasize adapting the paper to the gift.
A useful visual guideline is to make the finished bag roughly twice as tall as it is wide, but a short, wide bag may be better for a squat present. Keep the gift nearby while folding so you can check the fit before using tape.
Step-by-step: turn wrapping paper into a gift bag
1. Cut a rectangular sheet
Place the gift near the center of the paper to estimate the required size. Cut a rectangle large enough to wrap around the gift with a slight overlap at the sides and with extra paper extending above and below it.
Do not cut the paper exactly to the gift’s outline. You need extra width for the side folds and extra length for the bottom gusset and top closure. If in doubt, start with a larger sheet; you can trim excess from the top later, but you cannot add paper after cutting.
2. Make the side tube
Lay the paper printed-side down. Bring the left and right edges toward the center so they overlap slightly. Hold the gift beside or inside the loose tube and adjust the folds until the bag is wide enough without being excessively loose.
For a wider bag, place the vertical folds farther apart. For a narrower bag, bring them closer together. Once the width looks right, crease both folds and tape the overlapping seam from top to bottom. Use several pieces of tape or one continuous strip so the seam does not spring open.

For a neater result, apply double-sided tape for wrapping paper inside the overlap. If the tape will be visible, place it on the inside edge where possible or use gift-wrap tape that blends with the paper.
3. Fold the bottom gusset
With the side seam positioned at the back or at one side, fold the lower end of the paper upward. The height of this fold determines the depth of the bag’s base:
- A smaller fold creates a shallow base for a flat or narrow gift.
- A larger fold creates a deeper base for a wider or deeper gift.
Crease the fold firmly, then open the folded section. Push the sides inward and flatten the corners so the open end becomes a diamond shape. The two side corners should form triangular flaps. This is the same basic folded construction used in many paper bags; Gathered’s illustrated method shows the diamond-shaped base in detail.
4. Close and reinforce the base
Fold the top point of the diamond toward the center. Fold the bottom point upward over it so the two points overlap slightly. Tape across the overlap, then add tape along any loose surrounding folds or triangular flaps.

Cover the central seam securely and reinforce weak corners. If the paper feels flimsy, cut a piece of cardstock or thin cardboard to approximately the size of the finished base and place it inside the bag. This adds structure, but it does not make the bag appropriate for a heavy load.
5. Open the bag and shape it
Reach into the bag and gently push the folded base outward. Press the bottom flat and sharpen the vertical side creases so the bag can stand open. If the bottom seam pulls, wrinkles sharply or begins to separate, reinforce it before adding the gift.
The bag may initially look flat because the base is folded inward. It should become a box-like shape when the bottom is fully opened and the side folds are creased. The Little ELF guide also recommends checking the inside folds and adding tape where extra sturdiness is needed.

6. Add the gift
Place the gift inside without forcing it through the opening. Leave some space above the item so the top can fold cleanly. If the gift fills the bag right to the rim, the top will be difficult to close and the side seam may be strained.
For a rigid or unusually shaped object, add tissue paper around it rather than pushing the paper bag into a shape it cannot comfortably hold. If the item is heavy, sharp-edged or taller than the bag, use a sturdier commercial bag or another wrapping method instead.
7. Close the top
Fold the upper edge down once or twice, depending on how much paper remains. A fold made slightly above the gift gives the top more structure and keeps the paper from collapsing directly onto the item. Trim uneven overhanging pieces with scissors before taping the fold closed.
The quickest finish is a folded top secured with tape. You can also decorate the fold with a sticker, washi tape or a gift tag.
Three finishing options
Option 1: Fold-and-tape closure
Fold the top flap down and tape it shut. This is the fastest option and works well when the wrapping paper itself is decorative.
Recommended Free Tools
Option 2: Ribbon closure
Fold the top edge down first so the paper has two layers. Use a single-hole punch to make two holes through the folded top, then thread gift-wrapping ribbon through the holes and tie a bow. Add a gift tag to the same ribbon if desired. The holes can be centered for a symmetrical look or offset for a more casual design.
Do not punch the holes too close to the edge: leave enough folded paper above them that the ribbon will not tear through. If the paper is thin, add an extra fold or a small piece of tape behind the hole area before punching.

How to make the bag sturdier
- Choose medium-weight paper instead of very thin, brittle paper.
- Make the side seam overlap slightly rather than meeting edge to edge.
- Use enough tape to cover the full bottom overlap and reinforce the corners.
- Sharpen the vertical creases so the bag carries its shape instead of collapsing.
- Insert a piece of cardstock for the gift bag base when the bottom feels soft.
- Keep the contents light or moderately sized, and test the empty bag before trusting it with the gift.
Cardboard is reinforcement, not a load rating. The construction has not been standardized or tested for a particular maximum weight, so use a commercial bag or a sturdier material for heavy bottles, dense objects or anything valuable enough to be damaged by a bottom failure.

The bag is too narrow
The vertical side folds were placed too close together, or the original sheet was not wide enough. If you have not fully secured the seam, reopen it and refold farther from the center. Otherwise, start again with a wider sheet. Check the gift against the loose folds before taping next time.
The bottom opens
Add tape across the central overlap and along the weak triangular folds. Press the base flat while taping so the layers stay aligned. A cardboard insert can reduce flexing, but it cannot compensate for paper that is too small, too thin or overloaded.
The bag will not stand open
The base may not have been pushed completely outward, or the side creases may be too soft. Open the bag gently, press the base flat, and run a finger along each vertical side fold to sharpen it. Add a cardboard insert if the paper continues to buckle.
The top is uneven
Lower the top fold slightly so it sits above the gift rather than directly against it, then trim the visible excess. A ribbon, tag, sticker or strip of washi tape can conceal small differences in the edge.

The tape is visible
Use double-sided tape inside the overlapping seam, or position ordinary tape on the inside wherever the construction allows. For exposed areas, choose gift-wrap tape that blends with the paper. Do not pull the tape aggressively from delicate paper, since it may lift the printed surface.
When this method is not the best choice
This homemade bag is a good last-minute solution for lightweight clothing, boxed gifts, soft items and awkward shapes that are difficult to wrap conventionally. It is less suitable for extremely tall presents, sharp-edged objects, liquids, very dense gifts or anything heavy enough to strain the bottom.
If your primary goal is reducing disposable materials rather than using leftover wrapping paper, consider furoshiki as a separate reusable fabric-wrapping approach. It is not the same technique as folding a paper bag, but it may be a better long-term option for repeated gift wrapping.
Quick version
Cut a rectangular sheet large enough to surround the gift, with extra paper at the top and bottom. With the printed side down, fold the left and right edges toward the center and overlap them slightly; tape the seam. Fold the bottom upward, open that section into a diamond, fold the diamond’s top and bottom points toward the center, and tape the overlap securely. Push the base open, insert the gift, fold the top down, and tape it shut—or punch two holes and add ribbon. Reinforce the base with cardboard if the paper feels weak, and reserve the finished bag for lightweight to moderate gifts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a gift bag from thin wrapping paper?
Yes, but thin paper is more likely to crease or tear at the seam and bottom. Use additional tape, add a cardstock or thin-cardboard base insert, and keep the contents light. Medium-weight wrapping paper is a safer choice when available.
How do I make a paper gift bag without a hole punch?
Use the simple folded-top closure: fold the top edge down and tape it closed. You can also attach a gift tag or ribbon around the outside without punching holes.
How much weight can a homemade wrapping-paper gift bag hold?
There is no standardized load rating for this DIY construction. Treat it as suitable mainly for lightweight or moderate gifts, reinforce the bottom when needed, and use a commercial bag or sturdier material for heavy objects.
Why does the bottom of my paper gift bag keep opening?
The base seam may have too little overlap, too little tape, or too much weight. Re-tape the central overlap and triangular folds, make sure the base is fully flattened, and add a cardboard insert if the paper is flexible.

The Bottom Line
A wrapping-paper gift bag is made by building a taped paper tube, folding a diamond-shaped gusset for the bottom, and closing the top with tape or ribbon. Size it around the gift rather than following one rigid formula, reinforce the base when necessary, and use a sturdier bag for heavy or very tall presents.
