A strong graphic design portfolio is not a gallery of everything you have made. It is a curated argument for why a particular employer or client should hire you. Show your best and most relevant work, explain the brief and your role, make the site easy to navigate, and give visitors an obvious way to contact you.
This guide covers project selection, case studies, portfolios without client work, website structure, platform choices, and 25 practical examples you can use as references.
What a graphic design portfolio should do
A portfolio is a selected presentation of work that demonstrates visual craft, design thinking, problem-solving, communication, range, specialization, and professional judgment. It should show not only what you made, but how you responded to a brief, audience, budget, format, and other constraints.

It is different from a résumé, which summarizes your experience; a gallery, which may show images without explanation; and a social profile, whose presentation is controlled by a third-party platform. A case-study portfolio connects the brief, decisions, execution, and outcome. Adobe similarly describes a design portfolio as a curated collection that presents both the work and the creative approach behind it. Read Adobe’s portfolio guidance.
Decide who the portfolio is for
Choose a target before choosing projects. A portfolio trying to appeal to everyone often feels relevant to no one.
Full-time job
Prioritize work related to the advertised role. Show that you can follow a brief, collaborate, communicate decisions, understand production, and contribute consistently across multiple formats. For team projects, state the employer or agency, collaborators, and exactly what you did.
Freelance clients
Make your services and industries clear. Explain the business problem, deliverables, process, and outcome. Add testimonials or results only when you have permission to publish them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAgency or studio
Emphasize conceptual range, typography, craft, campaign thinking, and the ability to extend an idea across formats. Distinguish art direction from execution.
School or internship
Show potential, curiosity, process, and the ability to explain decisions. School assignments, self-directed work, and clearly labeled concept projects are valid portfolio material. Squarespace’s guide also recommends using school work when professional client work is unavailable.

Choose the right projects
A practical starting point is 8–15 strong projects. This is guidance, not a hiring rule: use fewer if every project is excellent and relevant, and add more only when they provide meaningful new evidence. Wix offers the same 8–15 range in its graphic-design portfolio guidance. See the source.
Lead with your strongest project, not your oldest or most famous client. Remove near-duplicates, visibly weaker work, and projects aimed at a direction you no longer want.

Score candidate projects
| Criterion | Question |
|---|---|
| Relevance | Does this resemble the work I want next? |
| Craft | Is the execution among my strongest? |
| Problem-solving | Does it show a meaningful design challenge? |
| Range | Does it add a capability missing elsewhere? |
| Context | Can I explain the brief and decisions? |
| Ownership | Can I describe my contribution clearly? |
| Outcome | Is there a useful result or application? |
| Presentation | Can the work be documented convincingly? |
| Permission | Am I allowed to publish it? |
Score each project from 1 to 5. Keep the highest-scoring work, but also retain projects that demonstrate a distinct capability. A famous client does not compensate for weak or irrelevant work.
What types of work belong in a portfolio?
Choose work that reflects what you want to be hired for next. Possible categories include:
- Brand identities and logo systems
- Packaging and retail design
- Editorial and publication design
- Posters, campaigns, and advertising
- Social-media campaigns
- Presentation design
- Web and landing-page design
- UI and visual design
- Motion graphics
- Illustration within a design system
- Environmental, signage, and wayfinding design
- Infographics and information design
- Annual reports, art direction, typography, and templates
Students and generalists can show range across print, digital, illustration, photography, animation, and typography. Experienced designers usually benefit from clear specialization, with versatility demonstrated within that discipline.
Build case studies that prove how you think

- What was the brief?
- What problem or audience did the design address?
- What did you do?
- Why were the key decisions made?
- What happened afterward?
Case-study template
- Title and summary: Name the project and describe it in one useful sentence.
- Brief: Explain the client, audience, objective, and constraints.
- Role: State whether you led, art-directed, designed, illustrated, managed production, or contributed to a team.
- Approach: Show relevant research, insight, exploration, or concept development.
- Final work: Present the actual design before or alongside mockups.
- Applications: Show how the system works on packaging, screens, print, signage, or other real formats.
- Outcome: Include launch status, deliverables, distribution, client approval, or measurable results when available.
- Credits: Name collaborators, tools, photographers, type designers, and other relevant contributors.
Keep the writing concise. Use captions, diagrams, annotated images, and short paragraphs rather than burying the work in generic phrases such as “bold and innovative solution.” A case study should provide evidence, not a biography.
Show process selectively
Include moodboards, sketches, type and color explorations, wireframes, rejected directions, before-and-after comparisons, production constraints, or system rules only when they explain why the final direction was chosen. Process is valuable when it clarifies thinking; it is not valuable merely because it exists.
How to make a portfolio without client work
Use school projects
Choose assignments that resemble real briefs. Explain the audience, constraints, decisions, and intended outcome instead of presenting them as finished images without context.
Create self-initiated projects
Invent a realistic brief for a local business, cultural organization, fictional product, nonprofit, startup, music project, or public-information campaign. Label it self-initiated, concept work, or speculative work.
Volunteer strategically
Work with a real organization only when scope, expectations, rights, and timeline are clear. Do not describe volunteer work as paid commercial work.
Develop a complete system
A fictional logo alone is weak evidence. Build an identity rationale, logo system, typography, color palette, packaging or editorial applications, digital uses, social templates, and usage guidelines.

Show a redesign honestly
A speculative redesign can demonstrate skill, but state that it is an exercise. Never imply that a company commissioned, approved, or adopted it.
Recommended portfolio website structure

Stronger professional structure

- Selected work
- Individual case studies
- Services, where relevant
- About
- Résumé or experience
- Testimonials or client list, where appropriate

Homepage order

Do not open with a long autobiography or a splash screen that delays access to the work. Use descriptive project names instead of “Project 01,” add a discipline or service subtitle, keep navigation obvious, and make thumbnails consistent where possible.
Recommended Free Tools
Your website is itself a design sample. Inconsistent spacing, poor cropping, broken alignment, excessive animation, slow video, or an experimental interface that hides the work weakens your argument.

Behance can be a valuable discovery channel and project archive, but it is not the same as owning a branded website. Behance Pro’s US information observed in August 2026 listed a starting price of US$9.99 per month on an annual commitment, with geography and commitment affecting pricing. Treat that as an observed offer, not a permanent universal price. See the official Behance Pro page.
Wix and Squarespace
Wix is a good fit for a broader freelance website with forms, services, marketing, and analytics. Its official guidance covers templates, AI-assisted creation, custom domains, project collections, and contact features. Review Wix’s portfolio options and check current pricing; Wix says final prices depend on the checkout page, plan, billing term, location, and promotions.
Squarespace suits designers who want polished templates and room to add services or commerce. Its plan structure changed in July 2026, so verify the current checkout and website-plan information before buying.
The platform matters less than selection, authorship, explanation, performance, and contact access. Do not buy software or hosting expecting it to compensate for weak projects.
Production workflow
- Define the target: Write, “This portfolio is designed to help me get [role or client type] work in [specialty or industry].”
- Audit your work: Record each project’s year, client, discipline, role, collaborators, deliverables, permissions, outcome, assets, and case-study potential.
- Shortlist: Choose 3–5 projects for the homepage, 5–10 additional archive projects, and 2–4 projects with especially strong process evidence.
- Gather assets: Collect final artwork, web exports, mockups, process images, credits, approved results, and testimonials.
- Write consistently: Use the same case-study structure so visitors can scan your work.
- Build a visual system: Set rules for type, spacing, image ratios, colors, links, buttons, captions, and mobile behavior.
- Test: Review phone, tablet, and desktop layouts; multiple browsers; keyboard navigation; forms; PDFs; image loading; contrast; alt text; spelling; and broken links.
- Publish and distribute: Add the link to your résumé, email signature, LinkedIn, proposals, applications, directories, and social profiles.
- Review: Reassess after major projects and periodically. Remove weaker work, update roles and results, and confirm that contact details and permissions remain current.
Permissions, confidentiality, and authorship
Do not publish confidential work without permission. Ask for written approval, password-protect the project, show only public-facing assets, omit sensitive strategy and metrics, wait until launch, or describe the work without displaying proprietary files. Wix also advises confirming permission before showing client or agency work.
For team projects, identify the agency or employer, team members where appropriate, your individual contribution, and whether you art-directed, designed, illustrated, or managed production. Label unreleased, internal, speculative, and self-initiated projects accurately. Never invent results; if metrics are unavailable, use honest evidence such as deliverable count, formats, markets, launch status, production constraints, or client approval.
Launch checklist
- Every project has permission to be published.
- Team roles and collaborators are credited accurately.
- The strongest and most relevant project appears first.
- Actual designs are shown, not only mockups.
- Images are sharp, compressed appropriately, and labeled clearly.
- Navigation, links, forms, PDFs, and passwords work.
- The site works on mobile and desktop.
- Keyboard navigation, contrast, alt text, and readable text have been checked.
- Titles, descriptions, spelling, punctuation, and social previews are correct.
- Contact details are prominent and current.
- A custom domain and SSL are configured if used.
- Analytics are installed only if useful and privacy obligations are understood.
- The portfolio has a review date and an update plan.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Showing everything instead of curating.
- Leading with attractive but irrelevant work.
- Showing logos without the identity system.
- Using mockups without showing the actual design.
- Writing vague claims instead of explaining decisions.
- Failing to state your role on collaborative work.
- Using unlicensed images, fonts, or client assets.
- Relying only on Behance or Instagram.
- Hiding the work behind confusing navigation or excessive animation.
- Making pages slow with oversized images or video.
- Ignoring mobile layouts and accessibility.
- Omitting contact details, experience context, or a résumé when relevant.
- Leaving old, weaker work online.
- Publishing typos and broken links.
Your next step
Choose five projects today and score them for relevance, craft, problem-solving, context, ownership, outcome, presentation, and permission. Put the strongest one first, write one concise case study, and publish a simple version before refining the design. A clear, honest portfolio that improves over time is more useful than an elaborate site that never goes live.
