Make the illusion with a widened face photo in a clear, water-filled jar—or build a dry prop with hidden supports and careful lighting. Both versions use a picture or prop, not a real head. The photo-in-a-jar method is the simplest place to start.
Choose a method
| Method | What it involves | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Photo in water | A widened, water-protected face print in a clear jar tinted with food coloring. | A quick, simple display; the image must be sized and protected from water. Amy’s Ever After describes the method in its head-in-a-jar tutorial. |
| Dry prop | A printed face or lightweight fake head in a clear container, with black fabric or poster board concealing depth and supports. | A reusable display where you can control the viewpoint and lighting. TechYorker outlines this approach in its head-in-a-jar guide. |
| Wearable costume | A container altered to fit over someone’s head. | Not recommended as a safer shortcut: the related tutorial describes tool and hot-glue hazards and reports heat discomfort. Choose a display or camera trick instead. See Chaotically Yours’ wearable costume tutorial. |
Make the water-filled photo jar
Gather materials
- A clear, wide-mouth jar with a lid. A smaller jar may be easier to size the print for.
- A face photo that includes the head and neck, plus a way to crop and widen it.
- A printer and image protection: laminating, clear contact paper, or lamination from a print shop.
- Water and food coloring.
Prepare and fit the image
- Crop the photo around the head and neck, then widen the image by about 50 percent. This is the image adjustment Amy’s Ever After recommends; treat it as a starting point, not a guaranteed fit for every face or jar.
- Measure the jar’s straight section and size the print to fit inside it. Check the jar’s width and height, and leave room for the image to curve with the glass.
- Print the image and protect it from water. Lamination is optional: clear contact paper or in-store lamination are alternatives.
- Place the protected image into the empty jar first. Adjust it until it sits at the intended height and looks convincing through the glass.
Fill and stage
- Set the jar on a stable surface before filling it. Add water and a little food coloring to tint the view; keep the image visible enough to read through the liquid.
- Close the jar with its lid. Amy’s Ever After mentions a glow stick as an optional display effect; it is decoration, not a requirement for the illusion.
- View the jar from where guests will see it. Change the image position or lighting if glare, reflections, or exposed edges make the photo obvious.
Build a dry, reusable version
A dry prop avoids immersing a print and can be easier to reuse. Use a clear container, a printed face or lightweight fake head, and a light base or support. Place black fabric or poster board behind or around the prop to hide the container’s depth and any supports.

- Set the face at the height and angle viewers will encounter it.
- Test the display from the actual viewing positions; a convincing straight-on view may fail from the side.
- Adjust lighting to reduce glare on the clear container and prevent supports or edges from showing.
- Keep the support lightweight and the container stable.
Keep the prank prop-based and safe
- Never put a real head in a sealed jar. Use a photo, fake head, or camera trick.
- Avoid sharp-edged materials and heavy glass where practical, and stabilize the display so it cannot tip.
- Plan a controlled reveal so nobody mistakes the prop for a real emergency.
- Do not adapt a display jar into a wearable container. The wearable costume approach involves cutting plastic and using tools or hot glue; the tutorial also reports that its wearer became sweaty and uncomfortable.
