How to Make a Houseguest Feel at Home: 4 Simple, Thoughtful Steps

The best welcome is practical, not extravagant. Learn four simple ways to make a houseguest feel at home, from pre-arrival questions and comfortable bedding to clear home instructions and respectful help.

The most effective welcome is practical: agree on expectations before arrival, make the sleeping and bathing spaces clean and comfortable, explain how the home works, and ask what would help while giving your guest room to settle. Thoughtful basics usually matter more than decorations or an imitation hotel experience.

1. Ask about the visit before your guest arrives

Comfort starts before anyone rings the doorbell. A short, friendly conversation prevents the small surprises that make a stay awkward: an unconfirmed arrival time, an unsuitable meal, a locked bathroom cabinet, or uncertainty about whether the guest should buy breakfast.

Confirm the practical details

Check the arrival and departure windows, how your guest expects to travel, and whether they will have a key or need you to let them in. If plans are likely to change, explain how to reach you and what to do if they arrive while you are out. Clarify the length of the stay in ordinary language rather than assuming that “for a few days” means the same thing to both of you.

Ask about dietary preferences, allergies, medications that need refrigeration, and any morning or bedtime routine that affects the household. You do not need to interrogate your guest; a message such as “Anything you do or do not eat, or anything that would make the room easier for you?” invites useful information without making the visit feel clinical.

Set expectations without sounding restrictive

Tell your guest the house rules that could otherwise surprise them. Mention shoes, smoking, pets, quiet hours, shower timing if the home has limited hot water, parking, laundry, and whether they should help themselves to food. Explain which rooms are private and whether there are children, roommates, or work calls that shape the household schedule.

Etiquette expert Nick Leighton put the principle plainly in AAA Via’s October 13, 2022 article: “Hosts should have a clear conversation with their guests in advance to ensure everyone’s on the same page about logistics and expectations.” The goal is shared understanding, not a list of demands. Offer the information, then invite questions.

Use the answers to make specific preparations

Turn what you learn into one or two concrete changes. A vegetarian guest may need a proper breakfast option rather than a note that says “there is food somewhere.” Someone working remotely may need a reliable place to sit and a quiet period. A guest arriving late may value a charged lamp and a snack more than a welcome drink. If you cannot meet a request, say so before the visit and suggest an alternative.

Question to ask Preparation it can trigger
When will you arrive and leave? Arrange entry, a key, parking instructions, and a realistic checkout time.
Is there anything you avoid eating? Provide suitable breakfast or snack choices and prevent accidental exposure to an allergen.
Do you need to work, study, or take calls? Identify a usable surface, outlet, chair, and quiet window.
Is there anything that would make sleeping or moving around easier? Adjust lighting, bedding, room layout, or bathroom access after discussing the preference.

2. Prepare a clean, comfortable place to sleep and wash

A guest does not need a showroom bedroom. They do need a clean place to sleep, somewhere to put their things, and a bathroom that is easy to use. Airbnb’s Resource Center checklist, dated January 10, 2024, treats fresh linens, clean towels, pillows, lighting, luggage space, and an extra blanket as practical hosting basics; use those ideas as a check rather than a mandatory shopping list.

  • Easy Maintenance: Our comforter sets are built to resist fading, shrinkage, and seam slippage. Simply machine wash with cold water on a gentle cycle and tumble dry on low, you can enjoy lasting comfort

Reset the sleeping space

  1. Strip and inspect the bed. Remove used sheets and check the mattress and protector for dust, stains, crumbs, or objects left under the pillow.
  2. Make the bed with fresh linens. Use sheets that fit securely, a clean pillowcase for each pillow, and a cover appropriate to the season. Place one pillow per guest as a starting point, then add an alternative only if the guest requests it.
  3. Provide controllable warmth. Fold an extra blanket or throw where it can be reached without unpacking. Do not assume a thick duvet suits everyone; let the guest choose layers.
  4. Create a landing place. Clear a section of closet, a few hangers, a drawer, or a luggage stand. A chair or bench can keep a suitcase off the floor when a stand is unavailable.
  5. Add usable light. A bedside lamp, reachable switch, or low-level night-light is more useful than decorative lighting. Test that the path from the bed to the bathroom is clear.

Inspect the room from a guest’s height and viewpoint. Remove personal paperwork, fragile objects, overflowing laundry, and anything that makes the guest feel they are borrowing a storage area. Leave a reachable outlet if possible, but do not create a tangle of extension cords.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the bathroom predictable

Put out clean towels and show where additional towels, toilet paper, soap, and basic toiletries are kept. Clear a shelf or counter so the guest is not forced to balance belongings around your products. Check that the toilet, shower, hot-water controls, and exhaust fan work before arrival. If a faucet, shower diverter, lock, or water heater has an unusual operation, explain it rather than waiting for a frustrated call.

Keep a small bin available and empty it. Replace a nearly finished hand-soap bottle and remove damp bath mats. These are inexpensive resets, but they signal that the room was prepared for this person rather than left over from the last use.

Buy only what solves a real gap

If the house lacks a suitable item, a few targeted purchases can help: an extra pillow, a washable throw, a bedside lamp or night-light, clean towels, or travel-size toiletries. A “guest bed sheet set” is a sensible search term when the existing bedding is worn or mismatched, but buying a complete new set is unnecessary when the current linens are clean, comfortable, and the right size.

3. Make the home easy to navigate

Guests feel at home faster when they do not have to ask where every ordinary thing is. Give a short tour on arrival and leave written information for details they may forget. Airbnb’s 2024 hosting guidance describes a house manual with device instructions; a handwritten note or phone message works just as well if it is accurate and easy to find.

Cover the information people need when alone

Share the Wi-Fi network and password, the thermostat or fan controls, and the location of extra supplies. Point out the light switches, electrical panel only if a guest might reasonably need it, first-aid supplies, fire extinguisher, and the route to the bathroom at night. Explain how to lock the front door and what to do with keys when leaving.

Include instructions for anything non-obvious: an induction hob that needs a pan before it activates, a faucet with separate hot and cold controls, a temperamental garage door, a television input selector, or an alarm that should not be armed by visitors. Demonstrate the item briefly, then let the guest try it so you can correct confusion immediately.

Use a compact home-information note

A one-page note can contain:

  • Wi-Fi name and password.
  • Your preferred contact method and what to do in an urgent situation.
  • How to lock doors, operate heating or cooling, and handle rubbish or recycling.
  • Where to find towels, toiletries, spare bedding, kitchen basics, and cleaning supplies.
  • Any quiet hours, pet routines, parking limits, or rooms that are off-limits.
  • Nearby essentials such as a grocery shop, pharmacy, or public-transport stop, if your guest is unfamiliar with the area.

Keep the note current. A wrong password or obsolete appliance instruction is worse than no note because it sends the guest down a dead end. Store it in the guest room or send a digital copy before arrival; do not hide it in a drawer that your guest cannot identify.

Explain safety without creating alarm

Point out exits and any building-specific procedure in a calm, matter-of-fact way. If your home has stairs, a step, a glass door, or a dim path, mention it and switch on appropriate lighting. Never treat a guest’s need for information as an inconvenience. Clear instructions reduce the number of interruptions and let the guest act independently.

4. Ask what would help, then give your guest room to settle

Hospitality is not constant attention. After the tour, make it clear that your guest may rest, unpack, work, or change plans without entertaining you. Tell them when you will be available and how they can ask for something discreetly.

Offer choices instead of guessing

Preferences vary even among people who appear to have similar needs. Ask, “Would a light on the route to the bathroom help?” or “Would you prefer another blanket or a cooler room?” rather than rearranging the room without consent. Ask before changing a guest’s belongings, opening luggage space, or offering food that may conflict with allergies or religious practice.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s ADA Guide for Places of Lodging: Serving Guests Who Are Blind or Who Have Low Vision, last updated February 24, 2020, advises lodging businesses to offer assistance and then follow the guest’s direction: “If your guest requests assistance, let him or her guide you in the most effective way of responding.” That guidance is written for lodging businesses, not as a blanket legal rule for private homes, but its respect-for-preference principle is useful when hosting anyone.

The same guide records that approximately 2.5 million people in the United States were described as legally blind and that about 5% of blind people used Braille for reading. Those figures are from the guide, not a current population survey, and they do not tell you what an individual guest wants. Ask the person, describe the layout clearly when requested, and do not grab, steer, or move mobility equipment without permission.

Protect privacy and independence

Agree on a simple rhythm for the stay: whether you will eat together, how much notice you need before going out, and whether the guest can use the kitchen independently. Knock before entering the room, even when the door is open. Avoid repeated check-ins that make the guest perform gratitude. One thoughtful message or a tray left with permission is enough; respond promptly if the guest asks for help.

Handle problems without embarrassment

If something fails, offer a practical fix rather than an apology tour. Bring a replacement towel, explain a noisy appliance, or move a lamp. If the home cannot provide a requested accommodation, say so directly and work with the guest on an alternative. A guest is more likely to relax when they can report a problem without being made to feel demanding.

A simple preparation plan you can follow

Use this sequence for an ordinary overnight or weekend visit:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Several days before: confirm dates, arrival method, food preferences, routines, and any access or sleep requests.
  2. The day before: wash bedding and towels, clear luggage space, test lights and bathroom fixtures, and write or update the home-information note.
  3. On arrival: show the sleeping space, bathroom, exits, Wi-Fi, key controls, and supplies. Keep the tour short and invite questions.
  4. After the tour: offer a choice of food, quiet time, or company. Tell the guest how to reach you and then let them unpack.
  5. During the stay: respect privacy, replace essentials when needed, and adjust one thing at a time in response to the guest’s feedback.

When deciding between two possible improvements, prioritize in this order: the guest’s stated preference, safe and easy access, the space available in your home, and then cost or decorative appeal. A clear note explaining the heating controls can do more for comfort than an expensive ornament. The welcome succeeds when the guest can sleep, wash, eat, and move through the home without guessing—and can tell you what would make the next hour easier.
