A “one-page book” is usually a mini-zine: one sheet folded into a small booklet with eight finished pages, not a book with only one page. You can draw or write the panels by hand, then fold and slit the sheet. If you mean printing a longer document and folding the printed sheets, use a separate booklet-printing workflow instead.
Choose the format that matches your project

The one-sheet method below uses standard letter-size paper (8.5 × 11 inches), as specified by Clemson University’s mini-zine guide. It does not require a special paper brand or printer.
Make an eight-page mini-zine from one sheet
1. Map the panels before adding artwork
- Fold a blank sheet into eight equal panels using the fold pattern you plan to follow.
- Write numbers 1 through 8 on the panels in the order you want the reader to encounter them.
- Unfold the sheet and note where each numbered panel sits. Use that map to plan your lettering or drawings.
The flat positions are not sequential, so a numbered practice sheet helps prevent pages from ending up out of order. Follow the diagram for your chosen fold pattern; panel orientation varies. See Clemson’s panel-mapping guidance and the Processing Community Day mini-zine instructions.

2. Draw or write the pages
Make the design on the unfolded sheet, keeping important words and details away from fold lines and the slit. Hand lettering and drawing are suitable for this format; Clemson’s DIY zine guide describes both. Omit the practice numbers from the finished artwork if they were only for mapping.
3. Crease and cut the center slit
For the Penrose Press pattern, crease the sheet in half three times to mark eight sections, then open it. Fold it in half text-side-out and cut or carefully tear from the middle of the folded edge toward the center. Stop at the perpendicular crease; do not cut past it. The Penrose Press instructions include a diagram for this specific pattern.

4. Open and collapse the booklet
Pull the two sides of the slit apart until the sheet forms a cross, then push the panels together and fold them into the small book. Check that the cover is where you expect and that the pages read in order. If they do not, reopen the sheet and compare it with your practice map and fold diagram before making another cut.
5. Make copies if needed
Scan the finished design, then print each copy using a layout that matches the same one-sheet fold pattern. Clemson recommends scanning for reproduction and notes that a direct phone photo may not give a clean black-and-white image. Print a multi-page document as a folded booklet
This is a different process from making a one-sheet mini-zine. Booklet imposition rearranges page pairs so the document reads correctly after printing and folding. Word and Acrobat provide booklet options, though the precise print workflow depends on your printer and whether it can print on both sides.
In Microsoft Word
- Open Layout → Margins → Custom Margins, then choose Book fold.
- Word changes the page orientation to landscape and arranges the pages for folding. Adjust the binding gutter if needed; Microsoft says the finished booklet width is half the selected paper width.
- Print one test copy before printing the full run. For Word’s manual two-sided process, Microsoft says to flip sheets on the short edge according to the printer instructions; do not assume that setting works for every printer and driver.
Microsoft Support says, “The Book Fold layout sets you up for printing your masterpiece automatically in the correct order, ready for folding and binding.” That describes Word’s page layout, not a guarantee that every printer’s duplex settings are correct. See Microsoft’s booklet instructions.

In Adobe Acrobat
- Choose Print → Page Sizing & Handling → Booklet.
- Select duplex printing for both sides if your printer supports it. For a printer that cannot duplex, use the appropriate front-side/back-side manual workflow.
- Print a test sheet and confirm that the reverse side is upright and the page pairs appear in the intended order.
Acrobat’s booklet print option handles page ordering; printer-side duplex and refeeding behavior still need checking.

- For a hand-drawn one-sheet mini, make and fold a numbered practice sheet before committing the design.
- For a printed mini-zine or booklet, print one proof and check that text is legible and pages follow the intended sequence.
- For a two-sided booklet, check whether the back is upside down. If it is, adjust the printer’s edge-flip or sheet-refeeding direction and test again; the right setting varies by printer.
- Keep multi-sheet pages in order, fold the stack at the center, and crease the spine before binding.

Bind only if the format calls for it
A one-sheet mini-zine holds together through its folds and can remain unbound. For a multi-sheet booklet, staple along the center fold or sew the spine with needle and thread.
