A personal applause sign is a light-up sign reading “APPLAUSE” that can be triggered wirelessly. Make:’s 2010 feature describes Randy Sarafan’s version, which used a hacked wireless doorbell as its trigger, but the available feature summary does not provide a verified parts list, circuit, or assembly instructions.
How the personal applause sign works
The concept is simple: a sign lights up on demand, prompting nearby people to clap. The Make: feature identifies a hacked wireless doorbell as the trigger, so the sign is activated remotely rather than by pressing a switch on the sign itself. Sarafan’s stated joke behind the project was: “People have been culturally conditioned to clap for light-up signs that read “APPLAUSE.””

What you may need to recreate the idea
A wireless doorbell kit or receiver is a plausible component category to investigate for a DIY version, because the feature names a hacked wireless doorbell as the trigger. The exact original model and its compatibility with any particular sign circuit are not established.
A separate Next Electronics listing for “Personal Applause Sign circuit” mentions a Hackduino board and a modified wireless doorbell receiver. Treat those as details from a related listing, not as a verified bill of materials for Sarafan’s original build; the listing’s publication date is not stated.

What the available sources do not establish
- The original doorbell brand or model.
- The sign’s exact lighting components, power requirements, or wiring.
- A circuit diagram or verified sequence for modifying the receiver and connecting it to the sign.
- Whether the Hackduino board listed by Next Electronics was used in the original project.
Without those details, it would be unsafe to treat the summary as a reproducible wiring tutorial or to assume that a particular doorbell receiver will work with a particular sign. Builders need a complete circuit and component specifications before assembling or powering an electronic version.
