How to Make a Pinwheel Star Quilt Block

A Pinwheel Star quilt block pairs a spinning HST center with star points. Compare patterns by finished size and construction, then follow one cutting chart from start to finish.

A Pinwheel Star quilt block combines a rotating pinwheel center with star points, usually using half-square triangles (HSTs). The exact cutting sizes depend on the pattern: documented versions make 12-inch finished blocks in different ways, while another pattern finishes at 10 inches. Choose one pattern and follow its cutting chart throughout; the dimensions are not interchangeable.

Choose a pattern before cutting

“Pinwheel Star” describes a design family, not one universal block layout. Compare the finished size, the way the HSTs are made, the units used for the star points, and whether the instructions include clear cutting and assembly diagrams.

Pattern Finished size Construction Documented cutting or unit details
Maker Mary (2022) 12 inches HST-based; 12.5 inches unfinished, using 1/4-inch seam allowances Includes 6-inch squares, 3.5-inch background squares, a 7.5-inch background square, and 4-inch accent squares. See Maker Mary’s pattern.
The Polka Dot Chair (2025) 12 inches Combines a pinwheel with a Sawtooth Star; uses eight-at-a-time and traditional HST methods Eight HSTs begin with paired 8.25-inch squares; four more begin with 4-inch squares. Units are trimmed to 3.5 inches. See The Polka Dot Chair’s tutorial.
AllPeopleQuilt 12 inches Pinwheel center, four flying-geese units, and corner squares Flying-geese units measure 3.5 by 6.5 inches before final assembly. See AllPeopleQuilt’s instructions.
Riley Blake Designs / Amanda Niederhauser (2021) 10 inches Four chain units, four star-point units, and one pinwheel unit The assembled block measures 10.5 inches unfinished. See Riley Blake Designs’ pattern.

Do not combine one pattern’s cutting chart with another pattern’s unit sizes: their layouts and seam assumptions differ.

Gather tools and fabric

Prym’s project supply list names seven fat quarters or 10-by-10-inch fabric squares, a 14-inch rotating mat, 12.5-inch and 5-inch square rulers, scissors, quilting pins, marking pens, thread, and a steam iron (Prym’s project supply list). A rotary cutter is useful for accurate strip and square cutting. A video tutorial also lists a 6.5-by-24-inch ruler, a 4.5-inch square ruler, a rotating mat, an iron, and a sewing machine (video tutorial).

  • Use the fabric quantities and colors specified by your selected pattern.
  • Choose fabrics with enough contrast to make the pinwheel rotation and star points easy to distinguish.
  • Have the ruler sizes your pattern calls for; a ruler can help square HSTs to their required finished-unit size.

Make the block

  1. Cut to one pattern’s chart. Cut the listed squares, triangles, and rectangles, keeping background and accent pieces organized.
  2. Mark paired squares. On the wrong side of each paired square, draw the diagonal line specified by the pattern.
  3. Sew and cut HSTs. Sew 1/4 inch on both sides of the marked diagonal, then cut along the line. Press the units as directed and trim or square them to the pattern’s required size. The documented Maker Mary and Polka Dot Chair approaches both include HST piecing.
  4. Assemble the pinwheel center. Arrange four HSTs so their contrasting triangles rotate around the center, then sew them together as instructed. Check the orientation before joining: reversing a unit changes the direction of the pinwheel.
  5. Make the star units. Depending on the pattern, add separate star-point units or flying-geese units, plus any corner squares. The block architecture varies, so follow the chosen pattern’s diagrams rather than substituting units from another version.
  6. Lay out and join the rows. Place all units in order before sewing. Join with quarter-inch seams, nesting or pressing seams according to the pattern, then measure the unfinished block before adding it to a quilt.

Check size and alignment

A 12-inch finished block is generally assembled as a 12.5-inch unfinished block when the surrounding quilt seams will remove 1/4 inch from each side. That expectation matches the 12-inch finished, 12.5-inch unfinished specification in Maker Mary’s pattern. Other patterns may describe their units and seam allowances differently, so use their stated unfinished measurement rather than assuming every version has the same dimensions.

  • If an HST is too large, square it to the pattern’s specified size before assembly.
  • If the pinwheel looks off-center, confirm that all four triangles point in the intended rotational order and that the seam intersections meet as shown in the layout.
  • If the assembled block is smaller or larger than expected, recheck seam allowance consistency and the required unit sizes before joining it to other blocks.
