Make a long, interlocked chain from jumbo wooden craft sticks or tongue depressors, keep it pressed flat as you weave, then release one end to send a springing wave through the structure. Use one illustrated weaving method from start to finish: tutorials differ in their starting crossings and end locks, so mixing steps can make the chain release before it is ready.
What you need
- Jumbo wooden craft sticks or tongue depressors. Choose sticks that flex slightly; very thick, rigid sticks may be harder to weave. Science Buddies recommends at least 50 tongue depressors and notes that large, somewhat flexible craft sticks can also work: Science Buddies’ chain-reaction activity.
- A hard, flat work surface.
- An optional book or other weight to help hold the weave down while you work.
- Optional paper cups for an end target. A Curious Crew / WKAR worksheet from circa 2016 suggests 8–10 cups for a cup-pyramid extension: Curious Crew activity resources.
For one specific size reference, Fizzics Education suggests tongue depressors measuring 150 × 17 × 1.6 mm. Stick dimensions and flexibility vary by brand, so treat that as its recommendation rather than a guarantee that every stick will behave the same way: Fizzics Education’s popsicle-stick bomb activity.
How to weave the chain
Follow a single illustrated set of instructions for the exact first crossings and final lock. The diagrams and finishing methods vary among tutorials; the sequence below describes the general over-under process without combining incompatible starts or endings. Keep the structure pressed against the table throughout.

- Set up the first crossings. Arrange the first few sticks according to the opening diagram in your chosen instructions. These crossings establish the pattern for the entire chain. Check that each stick passes over one neighboring stick and under the next where the diagram shows it should.
- Continue the over-under weave. Add sticks one at a time, following the established pattern. Keep the crossings close and consistent, and use the optional weight or your hand to keep the woven section flat.
- Pause if the weave begins to shift. Maintain pressure while adding sticks. If part of the chain starts to spring loose, stop and secure it before continuing; an accidental release can scatter sticks and leave you rebuilding.
- Finish using the same instructions. Use the chosen tutorial’s end-lock method exactly as illustrated. Do not substitute a finish from a different tutorial, since the starting and ending arrangements are not identical across sources.
- Prepare to release. Keep the chain on the flat surface, secure the far end as directed by your chosen method, and make sure everyone is clear of the flying sticks. Release only when you are ready to watch the whole chain.
Fizzics Education suggests using books or another weight over the weave during assembly. Keep hands and faces out of the path of the sticks: the activity sources warn that sticks can pop into the air, but do not establish a measured safe distance.

Why the sticks travel in a wave
Weaving the sticks bends them while locking them together, storing elastic potential energy. When one end is released, the sticks spring back and transfer motion to neighboring sticks, so the release travels along the chain rather than happening everywhere at once.
A 2017 paper in the American Association of Physics Teachers describes the released chain as a traveling wave and studies the motion of its moving front. The authors—Jérémy Sautel, Andréane Bourges, Aude Caussarieu, Nicolas Plihon, and Nicolas Taberlet—write: “When one end of the chain is released, the sticks rapidly disentangle, forming a traveling wave that propagates down the chain.” The physics of a popsicle stick bomb.

Experiments to try
- Compare chain lengths. Make a shorter and a longer chain, then observe how far the release travels. Science Buddies suggests chain length as a variable to investigate; the cited activity does not identify one universally best length.
- Change the path. Try a bend or an obstacle and watch what happens to the traveling release. Treat this as an experiment, not a guaranteed way to make the chain faster or more reliable.
- Record the motion. Film a release so you can replay the moving front and compare different builds.
- Add a cup target. Arrange paper cups beyond the end of the chain and see whether the released sticks reach them. The Curious Crew / WKAR worksheet suggests 8–10 cups for a cup-pyramid extension.
