The most reliable way to create a removable slipcover for an ottoman is to measure the upholstered piece, cut a top panel and side panels with seam and hem allowances, sew the cover inside out, test it on the ottoman, and finish the lower edge only after the fit is right. A draped, corner-seamed cover needs less pattern drafting, while a suitably sized throw rug can be hand-sewn without a machine.

Choose the construction method before buying fabric
Your ottoman’s shape, the finish you want, and the tools you have determine the best method. A square cube, rectangular bench, and round ottoman cannot use one universal pattern. The panel instructions below suit box-like rectangular furniture; a round ottoman needs a circular top and a side band shaped to its curve rather than four straight corner panels.

| Method | Best for | Work involved | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fitted sewn panels | Rectangular or square ottomans that need a tailored appearance | Measure and cut one top panel plus four side panels; machine-sew seams and hem | Snug, structured, removable cover |
| Draped and pinned cover | A rectangular ottoman when you want to shape fabric directly on the furniture | Join two fabric panels, drape them, pin corner folds, stitch, trim, and hem | Custom-shaped cover with less advance pattern drafting |
| Hand-sewn throw-rug cover | A bench-style ottoman and a rug with enough size and flexibility | Center the rug, turn edges, fold corners, and hand-stitch | Quick, soft cover with little or no machine sewing |
| Fixed re-cover | Furniture that should be upholstered permanently rather than covered for removal | Remove old fabric, sew a snug casing, then staple it underneath | Upholstery-style finish, not an ordinary slipcover |
The fitted-panel sequence is illustrated by M Avery Designs’ ottoman cover tutorial. The direct-drape approach follows HGTV’s rectangular ottoman method, and the rug alternative is shown by South House Designs.

Measure the ottoman, not an assumed pattern
Record the top and upholstered height
For a rectangular or square ottoman, measure the top from front to back (depth) and from side to side (length). Measure the upholstered height from the top surface to the point where you want the cover to end. Measure each side if the furniture is not perfectly symmetrical; cushions, rounded upholstery, and older frames can make nominally equal sides differ.
Write down the finished dimensions separately from the allowances. Every cut piece must include room for the seams that join it and the hem at the lower edge. If the finished top is 24 inches by 18 inches, for example, the top fabric piece must be larger than 24 by 18 by the seam allowance on all joining edges. The exact allowance depends on your sewing plan. M Avery Designs uses a half-inch seam allowance in its example; its project dimensions are not a universal pattern.
Account for the furniture’s shape
- Square cube: A single square top and four equal side panels are the simplest layout.
- Rectangular bench: The two long sides and two short sides have different widths. Label them before cutting so they do not get swapped.
- Rounded corners: A straight side panel may need a curved corner transition. Make a paper or scrap-fabric test piece if the upholstery does not have crisp 90-degree corners.
- Round ottoman: Use a circular top and a continuous curved side strip. Measure the circumference and the side height; do not force a four-panel rectangular pattern onto it.
- Irregular or tapered furniture: Measure at the top and bottom of each side. A side that widens or narrows needs a shaped panel rather than a simple rectangle.
Use a draped measurement when shaping on the ottoman
For the draped method, measure the route from floor to floor across one axis of the furniture, following the top and both sides. Add allowance for the seams joining the two large fabric panels and for the lower hems. The corresponding measurement across the other axis establishes the panel width. This approach is practical for a rectangular ottoman because the fabric is fitted on the actual piece, but it is not a ready-made formula for a round or unusually shaped ottoman.

Before cutting expensive fabric, mark the measurements on inexpensive cloth, a sheet, or paper and check that the proposed top and side coverage reach the intended lower edge.
Gather fabric and tools suited to the method
For a machine-sewn cover
- Home-decor or upholstery fabric, purchased in enough length for the top, sides, seam allowances, and hem
- Thread compatible with the fabric
- Measuring tape, pins, fabric scissors, and a sewing machine
- Optional rotary cutter and measuring guide for long, straight cuts, as used in the HGTV method
Fabric choice should follow the way the ottoman will be used. Sailrite advises choosing “a sturdy fabric that can withstand being pulled taut” for upholstery work and says a high double-rub count is preferable for daily-use pieces. That guidance does not establish one universal minimum rating, so compare the fabric’s own specifications with the expected traffic rather than treating one number as suitable for every room. See Sailrite’s re-cover tutorial for its upholstery material guidance.
For the hand-sewn rug option
- A throw rug or other textile wide and long enough to cover the top and create your desired overhang
- Large needle and upholstery thread
- Scissors, pins or clips, and a measuring tool
The rug must bend around the corners without fighting the upholstery. A thick, rigid rug can leave bulky wings or refuse to turn cleanly, while a very loose weave may need edge treatment before it is stitched.

For a fixed re-cover
Permanent re-covering additionally requires a staple gun and staples, a tack and staple remover, pliers, a screwdriver, and a hammer. Those tools belong only to the fixed branch; a removable cover should not be stapled to the ottoman base.
Make a fitted top-and-side slipcover
- Plan and label the pieces. Draw the top, front, back, left, and right sides on paper or directly on the fabric’s wrong side. Mark the finished dimensions, the seam allowances, and the hem allowance. Add matching notches at corners and long edges so the pieces stay oriented.
- Cut the top panel. Cut one piece for the upholstered top, enlarged by the allowance needed to join each side. Keep the grain or direction of a patterned fabric consistent with the ottoman.
- Cut four side panels. Each panel should equal its finished side length plus the joining allowances and the amount needed to reach the planned lower edge and turn the hem. The front and back panels of a bench will usually be longer than the end panels.
- Join the sides to the top. Put right sides together. Sew one side panel to its corresponding edge of the top, then continue around the top, matching corners and notches. Sew slowly at corners so the seam follows the upholstery’s actual shape.
- Close the vertical corners. With adjacent side edges right sides together, sew each corner seam from the top down to the lower edge. Keep the corner point aligned; a shifted point produces a twisted cover.
- Turn and test the cover. Turn the cover right side out and pull it over the ottoman. Check the top, all four corners, the side drop, and the planned lower edge before sewing the hem. This fitting step is essential; do not assume the cut dimensions are correct because foam and batting can compress differently from one side to another.
- Correct looseness or tightness. If the cover is loose, mark a narrower seam while it is on the ottoman, remove it, and resew. If it is tight, release the seam only where the fabric has enough allowance; otherwise recut the affected panel rather than forcing the stitches.
- Finish the lower edge. Once the fit is approved, turn and pin the hem evenly around the bottom. Sew it, trim stray threads, and turn the cover right side out for the final fitting.
A separate top and side construction creates the most tailored appearance, but it also exposes measurement errors at every corner. Keep the first fitting unhemmed so the lower edge remains adjustable.
Shape a draped, corner-seamed cover
- Make one large rectangle. Join two fabric panels along their long edges to create a rectangle large enough to run from floor to floor over the ottoman in one direction and across the other direction with the planned overhang. Include seam and hem allowances when calculating the cut.
- Find the center. Lay the joined seam over the centerline of the ottoman. Align the fabric so the overhang is balanced on opposite sides before pinning anything.
- Form each corner on the furniture. Pull the excess fabric at a corner into a straight, even fold. Pin along the line that creates the desired corner shape. Repeat on all corners, checking that the top remains centered.
- Stitch the pinned lines. Remove the cover carefully or sew with it off the furniture, following the pinned lines. The stitches become the shaped corner seams.
- Trim and test. Trim excess fabric outside the seams, leaving a safe margin. Put the cover back on and check that the corners sit flat and the lower edge reaches evenly.
- Sew the hem. Only after the test fit, turn and stitch the bottom hem around the complete cover.
This method reduces drafting because the ottoman itself supplies the form. The documented example is rectangular, so use a different pattern strategy for a round ottoman or one with heavily curved sides.

Turn a throw rug into a hand-sewn cover
- Check size and flexibility. The rug must cover the entire top, provide the desired overhang on every side, and bend enough to turn or fold at the corners. Lay it over the ottoman before cutting or stitching.
- Center and even the overhang. Measure from the rug’s edges to the ottoman’s sides. Shift the rug until the overhang is balanced and the weave or pattern is positioned as you want it.
- Turn edges where necessary. Fold the raw or loose edges under and tack them with pins or clips. You may not need a continuous hem if the existing rug edge is stable, but any edge that will unravel needs securing.
- Fold each corner into a wing. Gather the overhang at a corner, fold it into a neat triangular or wing-like shape, and hold the layers together with clips or pins.
- Hand-stitch the folds. Use a large needle and upholstery thread to stitch through the folded layers. Keep stitches secure but avoid pulling so tightly that the rug puckers on the top.
- Test and adjust. Place the cover on the ottoman after each corner is secured. Release and restitch a corner if it lifts, drags the cover off-center, or creates a lump.
South House Designs reports that the author’s own rag-rug cover was still in use after three years. The same account says loose threads had to be pulled through to the back after washing; that is one maker’s maintenance experience, not a prediction for every rug or laundering method.
Finish the fit before committing to the hem
A slipcover should sit smoothly on the top and reach the intended stopping point without exposing the upholstery. Test it while the ottoman is in its normal position, because a cover that looks even on a worktable can shift when the furniture is moved. Look for these checkpoints:
- The top seams follow the top edges rather than drifting toward one side.
- Each corner is the same height and does not pull the top fabric into a diagonal wrinkle.
- The lower edge is level enough for the room, even if the floor itself is not perfectly level.
- The fabric has enough ease to remove the cover for cleaning but is not so loose that it slides during ordinary use.
- Patterns, stripes, or fabric direction run consistently across the top and sides.
Pin or mark every change during this fitting. Then remove the cover, sew the revised seams, and make one final test before stitching the hem permanently.

When a fixed re-cover is the better project
If you want the fabric to become the ottoman’s upholstery rather than a removable layer, use a re-covering process instead. The Sailrite tutorial removes the old cover, sews a snug cover around the foam, fits it over the ottoman, and staples the fabric to the base. It also shows an optional tuft recreated with a snap-together button form and twine.
That route demands access to the underside and commits you to the fabric until you remove the staples. It is appropriate when the foam or old upholstery also needs attention, not when your priority is quick seasonal removal. Keep the staple gun, staples, and upholstery disassembly tools out of the removable-cover workflow.
Troubleshoot common fit problems
| Problem | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| The top is centered but the side seams twist | Panels were attached in the wrong order or a corner notch was missed | Label every panel, match notches, and resew the affected corner before hemming. |
| The cover is loose around the sides | Too much ease or an overestimated side measurement | Mark a smaller seam while the cover is on the ottoman, then resew and retest. |
| The cover will not reach the planned lower edge | Height was measured to the wrong point or hem allowance was omitted | Measure from the top surface to the actual stopping point and add the missing allowance in a new side panel or extension. |
| A corner forms a hard lump | Too much fabric is trapped inside the corner fold | Unpick the corner, trim only after confirming the fit, and restitch along a smoother line. |
| The draped cover has uneven overhang | The joined center seam was not centered before pinning | Remove the corner stitches, recenter the seam, and pin opposite sides before reshaping. |
| The rug corners spring open | The rug is too stiff or the wing fold is too shallow | Try a more flexible textile or make a deeper, flatter fold with additional hand stitches. |
| The lower hem waves | The edge was finished before the cover was fitted or the hem depth varies | Unsew the uneven section, pin it while the cover is on the ottoman, and stitch a consistent turn. |
Make the decision that matches your use
Choose fitted panels when a tailored, removable cover is the priority and you can machine-sew accurately. Choose the draped method when shaping directly on a rectangular ottoman will save more time than drafting separate pieces. Choose a throw rug when its dimensions and flexibility already suit the furniture and you prefer hand sewing. Choose fixed re-covering only when stapling fabric beneath the frame is an intended, permanent finish.
