You can create a Restoration Hardware–style rope chandelier by wrapping the visible arms of an existing chandelier with jute cord and fixing the cord with adhesive as you work. Jordin’s example used E6000 glue, jute cording and clips to hold each wrapped section while it dried. It is a decorative retrofit, not a tested electrical design: the published project does not establish safe heat clearances, load limits, wiring compliance or certification for a modified fixture.
Keep the work to the frame, measure your own chandelier, expect to need more cord than an initial estimate suggests, and have any hardwired fixture installed or checked by a licensed electrician.

What this project changes—and what it does not
The rope look comes from adding texture to the chandelier’s existing metal frame. You are not building a new electrical fixture. In the documented project, an existing wrought-iron chandelier remained the structural and electrical base while jute cording was glued and wrapped around its arms.
- Changed: the visible finish and silhouette of the chandelier arms.
- Unchanged: the fixture’s wiring, sockets, canopy, mounting hardware and electrical rating.
- Not established by the project: heat tolerance, fire safety, mechanical load capacity, code compliance or approval of the finished modification.
That distinction matters because natural fiber and adhesive can behave differently from the metal finish they cover. Do not present the result as an engineered or listed fixture, and do not assume that a cord-wrapped arm is safe simply because an unmodified chandelier was safe.

Materials and quantities to plan for
| Item | Use | What is known |
|---|---|---|
| Existing chandelier | Provides the frame and electrical assembly | Jordin used a wrought-iron chandelier. The frame must be sound before wrapping. |
| Jute cording | Creates the rope-covered finish | The example used several spools after the maker underestimated the amount. No universal length or cord diameter is established. |
| E6000 adhesive | Secures the cord to the arm | Named in the example. Confirm that the adhesive is compatible with your frame finish and follow its current label directions. |
| Clips | Hold wrapped sections while glue dries | Used in the example process. Choose clips that will not crush or permanently mark the cord. |
| Measuring and cutting supplies | Measure the frame and prepare cord ends | Select tools appropriate to your cord and fixture; the source does not prescribe a particular brand, size or cutting method. |
Do not copy a spool count from another chandelier. Arm length, arm circumference, decorative scrolls, branch count and the number of sections you can wrap without a join all change consumption. Measure the actual frame, then buy enough cord for that frame plus a practical allowance for waste, test wraps and mistakes. The only reliable quantity is the one you determine from your fixture.
Before you wrap: inspect the fixture and define a safe boundary
Decide whether the fixture can be treated as a decorative frame
Look at every arm, socket, wire, strain relief and mounting point. The documented technique is for the visible frame, not for electrical components. Keep cord and glue away from sockets, terminals, wire insulation, the canopy, moving hardware and any place where the fixture must make an electrical or mechanical connection.

If an arm passes close to a lamp or shade, stop and obtain advice from a licensed electrician or the fixture maker before adding natural fiber or adhesive. The cited project does not establish a heat-clearance distance, and the absence of a stated distance is not permission to improvise one.
Check the electrical work separately
Turn off power at the circuit breaker before touching a hardwired fixture. Do not use this project as a wiring tutorial. If the chandelier must be removed, rewired, mounted or reconnected, use a licensed electrician. Restoration Hardware’s instructions for its Small Rectangular Rope Chandelier state: “WE RECOMMEND INSTALLATION BY A LICENSED ELECTRICIAN.” That instruction applies to the manufacturer’s named fixture and is a prudent boundary for a hardwired DIY retrofit as well.

Verify the support
The same manufacturer instructions require that fixture’s electrical box to be attached to a structural building member. This is a requirement for that product, not a specification for your chandelier, but it illustrates why the mounting point must be checked independently of the decorative wrapping. Cord adds surface material; it does not make an inadequately supported box safe.
Step-by-step: wrap the chandelier arms
- Photograph and label the starting condition. Before removing anything, photograph the arm layout, socket orientation and canopy. Mark where each arm begins and ends so you can restore the same arrangement after the decorative work.
- Clean and dry the frame. Remove dust, grease and loose finish from the portions you will wrap. Let the surface dry completely. Adhesive performance on an unknown coating cannot be guaranteed, so test a small hidden area first and stop if the finish softens, lifts or remains oily.
- Make a dry test wrap. Use a short piece of jute to check the cord’s visual scale, the tightness of the turns and how it behaves around bends. This is where you discover whether your chosen diameter obscures details or creates gaps. Record the amount used so you can improve your estimate for the full frame.
- Choose a starting point and work in sections. Jordin describes applying glue along one side of an arm, then wrapping the cord tightly so it spread around the arm. Work only across a manageable section at a time; a long, fully glued arm becomes difficult to keep even before the adhesive sets.
- Apply adhesive according to its label. Use E6000 only as directed by its manufacturer, including ventilation, application, curing and skin-contact precautions. The example names the product but does not test its compatibility with every metal finish, cord treatment, bulb temperature or indoor environment.
- Wrap with consistent tension. Keep adjacent turns touching without crushing the cord. Follow the arm’s bends instead of forcing a straight spiral across a curve. Press the cord into the adhesive as you go, but do not squeeze glue onto sockets, wires or the front of the cord.
- Clip the section while it dries. Place clips where they hold the cord firmly without leaving dents. Move or replace clips as you progress so the next section remains aligned. Allow the adhesive to cure for the time specified on its label before subjecting the wrap to handling.
- Avoid mid-run joins when possible. The example maker tried to avoid joining cord in the middle of an arm. If a join is unavoidable, put it at a visually hidden transition, keep both ends firmly secured and inspect it after curing. Do not bury a loose end beside a socket or inside the canopy.
- Repeat symmetrically. Finish corresponding arms in the same direction and with similar tension. Compare opposite sides from several angles; small differences in spacing become obvious once bulbs and shades are installed.
- Inspect before reinstallation. Look for loose turns, exposed adhesive, cord ends that can unravel and any material that has migrated toward a socket or wire. A decorative inspection is not an electrical inspection. Have the fixture reinstalled or checked by a qualified electrician if it is hardwired.
How to handle common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Safer response |
|---|---|---|
| You run out of cord | The initial estimate did not allow for circumference, bends, waste or test pieces. | Stop at a natural transition, measure the remaining frame and buy additional cord. Do not stretch the cord thin to conceal a shortage. |
| Turns open into visible gaps | Uneven tension or an arm that changes diameter. | Unwrap the uncured section, reset the starting angle and keep adjacent turns touching. Do not compensate by flooding the gap with glue. |
| The cord slides after clipping | Too little adhesive, a dusty surface or a slick finish. | Let the area dry, clean the frame, test compatibility on a hidden spot and reapply only according to the adhesive directions. |
| Glue remains soft or damages the finish | Incompatible materials, excessive application or insufficient cure conditions. | Stop work, ventilate as directed by the label and remove only what the adhesive maker’s instructions allow. Do not energize the fixture while the adhesive is uncured. |
| The wrap approaches a bulb or socket | The decorative boundary was set too close to the light source. | Do not guess at a clearance. Remove or stop the wrap and ask a licensed electrician or the fixture manufacturer for an approved arrangement. |
Because no tested temperature, clearance or load data accompanies this technique, a successful-looking finish does not prove that the modification is suitable for every bulb, shade, dimmer or installation location.

Electrical and lighting limits: keep model-specific facts in context
Restoration Hardware’s instructions for its Small Rectangular Rope Chandelier rate that particular fixture for up to sixteen 40-watt maximum Type A bulbs and warn against exceeding its stated wattage. Those figures belong to the manufacturer’s model; they are not a recommendation for a DIY chandelier wrapped with jute. Use the rating printed on your own fixture and follow the instructions supplied with it.
The cited DIY project does not say that the modified chandelier was electrically, thermally or mechanically inspected. It also does not establish a listing or electrical-standard compliance after the cord and adhesive were added. Treat the wrapped chandelier as an unverified modification until a qualified professional confirms that the installation is appropriate for your location and equipment.

Indoor rope chandelier versus an outdoor solar alternative
If your goal is an outdoor ambient light rather than a retrofit of an existing indoor chandelier, use a different design. A March 2022 Bunnings tutorial describes two plywood rings, hanging hardware, cord fringe, solar rope lights and solar micro-LED wire lights. The rings are cut and drilled, then suspended from a hook. That project is a separate solar-lit feature, not a wiring or construction variant of the jute-wrapped chandelier.
| Decision point | Cord-wrapped chandelier | Solar plywood-ring feature |
|---|---|---|
| Typical location | Indoor decorative retrofit; the cited process begins with an existing chandelier. | Outdoor ambient feature described in the March 2022 tutorial. |
| Existing fixture altered? | Yes. The visible arms of an existing chandelier are wrapped. | No existing chandelier is required; the structure is made from plywood rings. |
| Power source | Retains the chandelier’s existing electrical system; no new wiring procedure is supplied. | Solar rope lights and solar micro-LED wire lights. |
| Main materials | Jute cording, E6000 adhesive and clips, plus the chandelier. | Plywood rings, hanging hardware, cord fringe and solar lighting. |
| Best fit | A texture change on a frame you already own. | Portable or ambient outdoor lighting where a solar feature is acceptable. |
| What the source proves | A maker’s decorative wrapping process, not safety or certification testing. | A separate build sequence, not a performance or weatherproofing guarantee for every installation. |
Choose one approach based on location, exposure and power source. Do not combine the indoor chandelier’s cord-and-glue method with the outdoor project’s solar components and assume the resulting hybrid has been evaluated.
Practical planning checklist
- Measure every arm and note changes in diameter, bends and scrollwork.
- Buy cord for the measured frame, with extra for test wraps and the possibility of several spools.
- Test adhesive and finish compatibility in a concealed area.
- Keep fiber and adhesive away from sockets, wires, terminals and mounting connections.
- Follow the adhesive label for ventilation, curing and handling.
- Do not exceed the bulb wattage printed for your own fixture.
- Arrange licensed-electrician installation or inspection for a hardwired chandelier.
- Photograph the completed frame and retain the fixture’s original instructions for future maintenance.
What a finished result can honestly claim
A properly even wrap can give an existing chandelier a rope-textured, Restoration Hardware–inspired appearance using accessible craft materials. It cannot, on the evidence available for this project, claim a universal cord quantity, guaranteed adhesive bond, defined heat clearance, structural rating or electrical certification. The decorative result is the part you can control: accurate measuring, consistent tension, clean transitions and a clear boundary around the electrical parts.
