Make a rustic wooden reindeer family by tracing body shapes onto weathered pallet wood, cutting them with a jigsaw, and fitting each figure with four same-length nail legs. Leather or fabric ears and tails, plus wire or twig antlers, complete the silhouettes. You can preserve the worn wood for a naturally rustic display or paint and decorate every figure for a more colorful Christmas arrangement.

The build is straightforward because each reindeer is a flat wooden body with glued-on details and inserted legs. Michelle, the project author at A Crafty Mix, estimates that assembly takes “about 30 minutes.” That is her personal estimate, not an independently timed benchmark, so allow extra time for selecting wood, cutting several bodies, and waiting for glue to set.
What this project makes
The finished set is a family of standing reindeer in different sizes or poses, depending on the template or shapes you draw. The bodies retain the character of a well-worn, weathered pallet board. The tutorial describes its board as thicker than usual pallet wood and guesses it may have come from a stringer pallet, but that guess is not a required specification. Use a sound reclaimed board that can be cut safely and is large enough for the shapes you want.

These figures work as seasonal Christmas décor or as rustic woodland pieces that remain on display throughout the year. Because every body is cut separately, you can make a small parent-and-young set, a matching group, or a single test figure before committing to the whole family.
“These little guys take about 30 minutes to put together, and they’re really easy to make.” — Michelle, A Crafty Mix, 2019
Materials and tools
Gather the following items before you trace the first body. Several supplies can be reclaimed or substituted exactly as the tutorial suggests.
Recommended Free Tools
| Item | How it is used | What the tutorial specifies |
|---|---|---|
| Weathered pallet wood | Flat bodies for the reindeer | A well-worn board; the author says hers was thicker than usual pallet wood. No required thickness is given. |
| Pallet nails | Four legs for each reindeer | Remove four nails of the same length per figure. |
| Leather or fabric scraps | Ears and tails | Cut two ears and one tail for every reindeer. |
| 100-grit sandpaper | Lightly smooths cut edges | Use it after cutting rather than heavily refinishing the weathered surface. |
| Wood glue | Secures folded ears, nail legs, antlers, ears, and tails | Only a small amount is needed on each nail tip. |
| Jigsaw | Cuts the body outlines | No brand, model, blade type, or setting is stated. |
| Drill | Makes leg holes and the antler hole | Bit size and hole diameter are not stated; match the holes to your chosen nails and antler material. |
| Jewelry wire or a small branch | Antlers | Wire is shaped around a pencil, or small twigs can be used instead. |
| Family template | Guides the body outlines | You may freehand the shapes instead of using a template. |
Have a pencil or marker for tracing and a stable work surface for drilling. Follow the safety instructions supplied with your jigsaw and drill, and secure the board so it cannot move while you cut.
Decide on the look before you cut
The tutorial presents two creative decisions rather than two different construction methods. Decide which surface and antler treatment fit your room, then repeat that choice across the family or deliberately mix the options.
| Choice | Appearance | Best reason to choose it | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain, weathered wood | Shows the pallet’s existing grain, wear, and patina | Fastest route to a restrained rustic display | No measured durability or cost advantage is reported. |
| Painted or decorated wood | Adds color, patterns, doodles, or printed designs to the sides | Lets the family coordinate with a particular holiday palette | No paint type, color scheme, or performance comparison is specified. |
| Jewelry-wire antlers | Thin, shaped branching lines | Useful when you want repeatable curves formed around a pencil | No wire gauge or long-term strength claim is given. |
| Small-twig antlers | Natural, irregular branch silhouettes | Reinforces the woodland look and avoids shaping wire | No branch species, diameter, or durability test is stated. |
Ask yourself, “Which version do you like more?” The answer can be different for each reindeer: a weathered parent with wire antlers and painted youngsters with twig antlers can still read as one family.

Prepare the pallet wood and pattern
Inspect and position the board
Choose the broadest usable face of the reclaimed wood and orient the grain so the bodies fit with as few weak, narrow sections as possible. The source does not provide body dimensions or a required board thickness, so let your template and available wood determine scale. Do not treat the author’s guess about a stringer pallet as a rule.

Use a template or draw freehand
Arrange the family shapes on the board with enough room for the jigsaw blade to turn around legs, necks, and antlers. Trace each outline clearly. If you do not have a template, draw simple side-profile reindeer freehand; the tutorial explicitly allows that approach. Keep the underside broad enough to accept four leg holes and the head large enough for one antler hole.
Build the reindeer, step by step
1. Trace every body
Transfer the chosen family shapes to the weathered board. Mark which shape is the parent, youngster, or individual pose if you are making several, so you can keep the intended arrangement after cutting. Check that no outline runs across a major split or damaged section you do not want to include.
2. Cut the silhouettes with a jigsaw
Cut directly on the traced lines with the jigsaw. Work patiently around the nose, chest, belly, and legs of the profile. The tutorial names a jigsaw but does not prescribe a blade or speed; use the settings and blade appropriate for your tool and wood. Make all body cuts before preparing the small details so you can see how much scrap remains.
3. Smooth the edges and cut details
Lightly sand rough cut edges with 100-grit sandpaper. The goal is to remove splinters and harsh fuzz while retaining the aged appearance of the pallet surface. From leather or fabric scraps, cut two ears and one tail for each reindeer. Keep the ear pieces similar in size within a single figure, but vary the family members if you want a handmade, less uniform look.

Make the ear three-dimensional by cutting a small slit at its base. Fold the two slit edges together and glue them. Hold the fold until it stays closed, then set the ear aside while you prepare the others. This folded base gives the ear a slight angle instead of leaving it as a completely flat scrap.

5. Drill four leg holes
Turn each body over and mark four leg positions along the bottom edge. Drill one hole for each leg, keeping the depths consistent from hole to hole. The tutorial does not state a drill-bit size, hole diameter, or depth measurement. Match the hole to the diameter of your chosen nail and make a test hole in scrap wood first so the nail fits firmly without splitting the body.
Consistent depth matters because legs that stop at noticeably different points can make the reindeer rock. Keep the drill as straight as practical and clear sawdust from each hole before gluing.
6. Install the nail legs
Use four pallet nails of the same length for each reindeer. Put a small amount of wood glue on the tip of each nail, then push the nails into the prepared holes. Wipe away visible squeeze-out before it dries. Set the body on a flat surface while the glue begins to hold, but do not force a crooked nail into alignment by twisting the wood around it.
7. Add the antlers
For wire antlers, wind jewelry wire around a pencil to create a curved, branching form. Make a pair that suits the scale of the head, then drill one hole on top of the head and insert the antlers. If you prefer branches, select small twigs with a shape you like, trim them to fit, and insert them in the same way. The tutorial treats twigs as an alternative to wire, not as an additional requirement.
Because no antler-hole diameter is specified, match the opening to the material you actually choose. A snug test fit in a scrap offcut helps you avoid enlarging the finished head unnecessarily.
8. Glue on the ears and tail
Position the folded ears on the head and the tail at the rear of the body, then glue both in place. Let the pieces settle before moving the figure. Arrange the ears as a matched pair or angle them differently to give each family member a distinct expression.

Make the family stand steadily
Place each completed figure on the surface where it will be displayed and check for rocking. If a reindeer is wobbly, the author’s adjustment is simple: bend the nails slightly until the figure stands steadily. Make small corrections one leg at a time rather than sharply bending a nail back and forth.

If instability appears before the glue has set, verify that the four holes were drilled to consistent depths and that each nail is fully seated. If one nail is visibly shorter than the others, replace it with a same-length pallet nail where possible. The project does not provide a prescribed leg angle, so stability comes from careful hole placement and minor adjustment rather than a fixed measurement.
Finish the wood your way
Leave the pallet surface plain
A plain finish keeps the worn texture and marks that make reclaimed wood look rustic. Light sanding on the cut edges is enough for the tutorial’s weathered option. This approach also makes the grain and nail legs the visual focus.
Paint the bodies
Painting changes the mood without changing the construction. You can cover the entire body, paint only the sides, or use a limited palette across the family. Allow the surface to dry before handling the ears, tail, and antlers so you do not smear the details. The source suggests painting but does not specify a paint brand, type, color, or protective topcoat.
Add doodles or printed designs
For a more graphic set, doodle patterns on the sides or apply printed designs. Keep the marks simple enough to follow the body contours, or give each reindeer its own motif. These decorations are optional alternatives to the plain finish, not steps required for the figures to stand.
Display ideas and practical choices
Group the reindeer at different depths on a mantel, shelf, entry table, or covered porch. A parent-and-young arrangement makes the size differences in your freehand shapes easy to read. For a year-round display, the weathered wood and twig antlers suit a woodland theme; for a holiday-only arrangement, painted sides and wire antlers can provide a brighter seasonal signal.

Keep the materials choice consistent with the setting. Wire lets you form repeatable antler curves around a pencil, while twigs emphasize natural variation. The source gives no measured comparison of durability, price, or outdoor performance, so choose based on appearance and the conditions in which you plan to display the figures.
Quick troubleshooting
The body rocks on its legs
Check that all four nails are the same length, that the holes were drilled to similar depths, and that each nail is fully inserted. Bend the nails slightly, as suggested in the tutorial, until the feet contact the surface evenly.
An ear lies flat
Recheck the small slit at the ear base. Fold the slit edges together and reglue the joint so the material holds an angle. Wait for the glue to grab before attaching the ear to the head.

Test the hole against the wire or twig before adding glue. If the opening is too large for the chosen material, use a snug-fitting piece rather than relying on a measurement that the tutorial does not provide.
The cut edge is splintered
Lightly sand the rough area with 100-grit paper. Preserve the board’s worn face while concentrating the sanding on freshly cut edges and corners.
Final check before display
- Every body has two ears, one tail, and four same-length nail legs.
- The four leg holes in each body were drilled with consistent depths.
- Antlers are either pencil-formed jewelry wire or suitably sized small branches.
- Glue joints have had time to hold before the figures are moved.
- The finish is intentionally plain, painted, doodled, or decorated with a printed design.
- Each reindeer stands without rocking after any small nail adjustment.
This construction keeps the project approachable while leaving the character of the family up to your wood, silhouettes, and finishing choices. Start with one figure if you want to test the proportions, then repeat the process for the rest of the group.
