A sand pendulum draws by releasing grains from a suspended container as it swings over a tray. For a basic version, hang a small sand reservoir above a catch tray, open its outlet as you release the pendulum, and let the falling grains trace its path. A double pendulum can move in two directions and create more intricate figures.
What you need
- A stable overhead support with enough clearance for the pendulum to swing.
- A light container or funnel that can hold a small amount of sand and hang as the bob.
- A small outlet that can be opened and closed, such as a plug or ball-and-string stopper.
- A tray or shallow bed beneath the swing to catch the sand.
- Sand, plus a way to reset or collect it between drawings.
The University of Iowa’s teaching setup lists a sand pendulum, sand and a platform; it also notes that the bob’s height must be adjusted to trace the surface. Its equipment list includes a black cloth and Plexiglas platform. The University of Minnesota demonstrates a funnel whose outlet is plugged with a ball and string. Neither institution gives a universal home-build dimension or outlet size. Set up and draw a basic pattern
- Position the tray. Place it below the full swing path so the sand lands on its surface. Adjust the bob height so the outlet is close enough to leave a trace without dragging through the sand.
- Prepare the outlet. Add a small amount of sand and close the outlet. Check that it is clear by briefly testing the flow while the pendulum is still. Use only enough sand to make a visible line.
- Release the pendulum. Displace the bob modestly, then open the outlet as you release it. Avoid adding a sideways push if you want a simple back-and-forth trace.
- Let the trace finish. Allow the pendulum to swing while the grains fall. Close or adjust the outlet if sand continues to flow after the pendulum stops, then reset the surface for another try.
The University of Minnesota describes its release in these terms: “To make the figure, displace the bob, pull out the ball, and release.” Its instruction applies to that apparatus; your container’s stopper may work differently. A steady support and a tray wide enough for the swing are practical assembly choices, not dimensions specified by the university demonstrations. Secure the support and do not load a fragile overhead fixture.
How the pattern forms
The outlet moves with the swinging pendulum, and the falling grains record that motion. The Nagoya City Science Museum describes its exhibit this way: “A container is placed below a pendulum which contains sand, and has a hole drilled in its bottom.” Its page connects the resulting figures with simple harmonic oscillation: Nagoya City Science Museum, “Pattern of Pendulum Movement”.

One-direction swing
A pendulum swinging primarily in one plane traces a repeated path back and forth. The exact line depends on the swing and on how the sand leaves the outlet.
Two-direction swing
A compound pendulum with two support points and different lengths can swing in two planes. The combined motions can draw Lissajous figures. The University of Iowa identifies these patterns in its demonstration, while the University of Freiburg’s sand-writing double-pendulum procedure uses both possible swing directions and releases the sand stopper as the pendulum starts: University of Freiburg, “Lissajous mit Sandschreiber-Doppelpendel”.

Do not expect every drawing to match exactly. The release direction, the relative motion in the two planes, the sand flow and friction all affect the trace. The cited demonstrations do not provide a quantitative method for predicting a particular figure.
Try a two-direction demonstration
The University of Freiburg gives an apparatus-specific procedure: add about two thimblefuls of sand to its reservoir, deflect the pendulum in both possible swing directions, and pull the stopper as the pendulum is released. That amount is for the Freiburg apparatus, not a general fill recommendation for a home funnel. Follow the same basic sequence with your own setup—fill modestly, set motion in both directions, and release the sand as the pendulum begins to move—then adjust based on whether the trace is visible and the outlet flows cleanly.

Choose a setup for your goal
For a home or classroom activity, compare designs by the features that affect the drawing and reset:
- Support and height: Choose a support that stays steady and allows the bob to clear the tray while keeping the outlet near the drawing surface.
- Outlet control: A stopper that opens and closes predictably makes it easier to start the flow with the swing.
- Motion: A single-plane swing makes a straightforward trace; a two-direction compound arrangement can create more complex figures.
- Collection and reset: A platform or tray that catches the grains makes it easier to clear the surface and begin again.
- Purpose: A compact suspended reservoir is suited to drawing. A Foucault pendulum is a different, larger-scale physics demonstration.
A STEM activity booklet includes an assembly diagram for a sand pendulum tower, but that does not establish a currently available kit or a particular retail model: SmartLab Toys, STEM 101 Activity and Instruction Booklet.

Sand pendulum or Foucault pendulum?
A tabletop sand pendulum is generally used to draw its oscillating path or a compound-motion figure. A Foucault pendulum demonstrates Earth’s rotation: its swing direction appears to change relative to the floor over time. In the 1851 Panthéon demonstration, a suspended ball drew successive lines in sand while observers watched the effect. MIT’s account explains the historical demonstration: MIT News, “Replicating a simple but elegant experiment” (January 22, 2015). Freiburg also describes a rotating-table version whose path appears as a rosette in the rotating frame: University of Freiburg, “Foucault-Sandpendel”.
