You can make a small galley kitchen feel brighter and more spacious without changing its footprint. A 9-by-6-foot kitchen documented by homeowner and author Bob Beacham kept its walls and floor tiles, yet gained a noticeably less crowded appearance through a lighter paint scheme, taller cabinets on one side, fewer cabinets on the other, layered lighting, and a more efficient storage and appliance layout. The room did not become physically larger; its finishes, sightlines and work surfaces changed the way it is experienced.
The before-and-after in one room
Beacham describes the starting kitchen as cramped and poorly organized. It measured 9 feet by 6 feet, with a small alcove for the refrigerator; the alcove is mentioned separately from the stated room dimensions. The only daylight came through a glazed front door. Yellowed, partly cracked wall tiles, brown varnish on an interior door and bulky cabinets made the limited light work harder.

The renovation stayed within the existing walls and retained floor tiles that continued through much of the ground floor. The changes were visual and functional rather than structural: new cabinet proportions, a reduced run of wall cabinets, white paint, light-blue cabinetry, new lighting, a different sink arrangement, relocated appliances and easier-to-reach storage.
Beacham says the finished room had an “open and uncluttered feel that makes it seem much bigger than it is.” That wording matters. The account reports a visual impression, not an increase in floor area or an independent measurement of spaciousness.

What changed
| Element | Before | After | What the case study establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Footprint | 9 by 6 feet, plus a small refrigerator alcove | Same walls and floor area | No wall removal or dimensional expansion is reported. |
| Wall treatment | Yellowed, cracked wall tiles | Waterproof plaster coating over the existing substrate, on contractor advice | This was a project-specific solution, not a universal substitute for tile or drywall. |
| Cabinet color | Heavier-looking existing finish | Light blue doors with brushed-steel handles | Light finishes reflect more of the available daylight than the previous darker surfaces. |
| Upper cabinets | Cabinets on both sides | Taller units on one side; wall cabinets removed on the opposite side | The homeowners report retaining the same amount of storage while reducing visual bulk. |
| Lighting | Insufficient illumination in a room with little daylight | Range-hood spotlights, under-cabinet LEDs and a four-way ceiling spotlight rail | The article names the arrangement but gives no brand, brightness, color temperature or electrical specification. |
| Microwave | On the countertop | Mounted on the wall | Counter space beside the sink was recovered. |
| Sink | Smaller sink and separate draining arrangement | Sink reported as 30 percent larger, with a drainer extending over the dishwasher | The figure is for this remodel, not a general design recommendation. |
| Base storage | More low cupboards | Most base units changed to deep drawers | The owner found drawers easier to reach into than low cabinets. |
Why a lighter palette helps a windowless galley
In a narrow room with one modest source of daylight, every large surface influences the overall brightness. White walls and a white-painted interior door replaced yellowed tile and brown varnish in this project. The cabinets were painted light blue rather than a deep or highly saturated color. Those choices do not add lumens, but they reflect more of the light entering through the glazed door and reduce the visual weight of the parallel cabinet runs.
Use contrast without creating a dark canyon
A galley kitchen still needs contrast so edges, handles and work areas are easy to read. The example used brushed-steel handles and a colorful mandala mural rather than making every surface the same white. Keep the largest planes—walls, doors and tall cabinet fronts—light, then add smaller accents through hardware, art, a backsplash or textiles. In a room this narrow, a dark color across an entire wall can make the aisle feel more enclosed even when the paint itself is attractive.
Prepare damaged tile before choosing a coating
When the old wall tile was removed, an older tile layer was found beneath it. Rather than stripping the substrate back for drywall, the homeowner consulted a building contractor, who recommended a waterproof plaster coating. That advice applied to this particular wall assembly and moisture exposure. Before painting or plastering your own kitchen, have a qualified professional check whether the substrate is sound, whether moisture is present and whether the proposed coating is approved for the area around your sink and cooktop.
Repair loose or cracked material, clean grease thoroughly and follow the coating manufacturer’s required primer and curing times. A smooth, light-reflective surface will only stay bright if the preparation prevents peeling, staining and recurring dampness.

Reduce visual bulk while keeping storage
Removing cabinets can sound like sacrificing function, but the case study used an asymmetrical approach. Wall cabinets were taken down from one side of the galley, while the remaining units on the other side were made taller. The homeowners say the storage capacity stayed about the same, yet the open side made the room feel less boxed in.
Plan the sightline first
Stand at the kitchen entrance and look down the aisle. The first things you see should be the lightest, least cluttered surfaces. A continuous wall of upper doors at eye level creates a stronger tunnel effect than a single taller run balanced by open wall space. Keep frequently used appliances, packaging and small containers off the exposed counter so the newly open sightline remains useful.

Most of the replacement base units were deep drawers. Beacham found them easier to reach into than low cupboards because the contents can be pulled toward the user instead of searched at the back of a dark box. Drawers do not automatically create more capacity; they improve visibility and access. Check that drawer fronts, handles and nearby appliances have enough clearance to open without blocking the aisle.
Layer lighting instead of relying on one bright fixture
The remodel combined three lighting positions. A low-profile range hood with twin spotlights illuminated the cooktop, LED lighting beneath the remaining wall cabinets brightened the food-preparation surface, and a four-way ceiling spotlight rail supplied general light. This arrangement addresses different shadows: the hood covers the cooking zone, under-cabinet light reaches the counter where hands and knives work, and ceiling spots provide overall visibility.

Task light belongs close to the work surface
Under-cabinet LED lighting is the most directly evidenced shopping category in the case study because it was installed specifically to brighten food preparation. Place the light toward the front underside of the cabinet so the worktop is illuminated rather than your own back casting a shadow. Select a fixture rated for the location, route wiring safely and use a qualified electrician where new circuits, junction boxes or concealed cables are involved.
Use ceiling spots to fill, not overpower
A rail with four adjustable spots can spread light along a narrow room, but the number of lamps alone does not establish adequate brightness. The case study supplies no lumen output, beam angle, color temperature or electrical rating. Aim each head at a zone—entry, sink, preparation area and cooking area—then check for glare on glossy paint, tile or stainless steel. Lighting controls should let you use task light without running every fixture at full output.
Ventilation is separate from lighting
The low-profile hood and its twin spotlights are an example of compact equipment placement, not proof of a particular extraction performance. Confirm the hood’s required ducting, recirculation arrangement, noise level and local code requirements before purchase. A bright hood light cannot compensate for inadequate ventilation.
Recover counter space through layout changes
In a galley kitchen, a few inches of clear counter can change how two people work. The homeowners moved the microwave from the countertop to the wall, freeing the area beside the sink. Their replacement sink was reported as 30 percent larger than the old one, yet its drainer extended over the dishwasher, preserving more central worktop.

Relocate appliances only after checking services
A wall-mounted microwave can clear a valuable landing zone, but the wall must support the unit and the outlet must be correctly positioned. Verify the manufacturer’s mounting height, ventilation requirements and door swing. If wiring is exposed during the work, use a licensed or otherwise qualified local contractor; Beacham’s account says electrical work was referred to a local contractor after the wiring was uncovered.
Coordinate sink, dishwasher and drawer openings
The over-dishwasher drainer is a space-saving detail, not a universal dimension. Measure the sink cabinet, dishwasher width, plumbing, waste route and the swing of adjacent drawers. Mark every opening on the floor with tape before ordering cabinets. This simple mock-up reveals conflicts that a plan viewed only on paper can miss.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical sequence for your own no-wall-removal remodel
- Measure the existing room. Record wall-to-wall dimensions, the refrigerator alcove, door swing, window or glazed-door location, ceiling height and every obstruction. Do not count an alcove as part of the main room unless your plan genuinely changes it.
- Photograph and label services. Map outlets, switches, plumbing, appliance connections and any exposed wiring. A lighting or appliance move can trigger electrical, plumbing or ventilation work even when walls remain.
- Set a visual hierarchy. Decide which surfaces will be lightest. In the case study, walls and the interior door were white, while cabinets were light blue and hardware supplied restrained contrast.
- Assess the wall substrate. Have cracked tile, dampness and hidden layers evaluated. Choose plaster, tile, panel or another finish only after a professional confirms compatibility with the substrate and wet areas.
- Draw cabinet elevations on both sides. Test a taller cabinet run against an open opposite wall. Include handle projection, door and drawer clearances, appliance doors and the refrigerator alcove.
- Protect the worktop. Identify countertop appliances that can move to a wall, pantry or drawer. Keep a landing area beside the sink and cooking surface; do not trade every inch of counter for extra storage.
- Design the lighting layers. Place task light under cabinets, general light overhead and cooking light at the hood. Specify switching zones and have electrical work reviewed against local rules.
- Mock up the aisle. Use cardboard or painter’s tape to represent cabinet fronts, the microwave and appliance doors. Walk the route while opening drawers and the dishwasher.
- Finish and declutter deliberately. Paint after dusty installation work, then keep only daily-use items visible. The open-wall strategy works only if that wall stays visually calm.
Planning rules, permits and professional checks
The National Kitchen and Bath Association’s current planning-guideline overview describes its fifth edition as intended for designers working in the United States and Canada. It covers accessibility, storage systems, interior environment, lighting controls, ventilation calculations, electrical planning and code compliance. The edition was prompted by the 2024 International Residential Code and Canada’s CSA B652: Accessible Dwellings (2023). Use those guidelines as a planning reference, then verify the rules adopted by your own jurisdiction.
NYKB’s galley-kitchen guidance for New York City apartments stresses lighting layers, storage, appliance and drawer clearances, and review of building rules, structure, plumbing, electrical work and ventilation before altering walls. That is NYC-specific remodeling guidance, not a replacement for a permit review or a site assessment elsewhere.

What this makeover does—and does not—prove
This case study demonstrates that a small galley can look brighter and less crowded when reflectivity, cabinet mass, lighting and workflow are addressed together. It does not establish a universal cabinet layout, a guaranteed storage capacity, a particular lighting specification or a cost and schedule. The account gives no project price, construction duration, named products, exact aisle dimensions, ventilation performance or permit details.
The reported 9-by-6-foot size and 30 percent sink increase describe this one home. Likewise, the owners’ statements that the room “opened up tremendously” and retained the same storage are valuable user observations, not independent measurements. Treat them as a design direction: preserve the footprint, lighten the shell, remove unnecessary visual mass, put light where work happens and test every clearance before ordering.
Finishing details that keep the room feeling open
The final decorative feature was a large mandala mural painted by Xandra, the homeowner’s wife, along with 21 handmade embossed backsplash tiles. Beacham says they added color and texture while remaining easy to clean. In a narrow kitchen, one intentional focal point is usually more effective than many small decorative objects spread across both walls.
Choose washable finishes in splash-prone areas, seal porous handmade surfaces as directed and keep grout or textured details accessible for cleaning. The goal is not a sterile white box; it is a controlled mix of light planes, practical task lighting and a few durable accents that do not interrupt the aisle.
Bottom line for a small galley kitchen
Keep the walls if they are sound, then change what the eye and hands encounter: light-reflective paint, a repaired and suitable wall finish, taller storage on one side, fewer upper cabinets on the other, layered LEDs and overhead light, and appliances positioned to return counter space. That combination can make a 9-by-6-foot galley feel substantially more open without claiming that its floor area increased.
