This wearable severed-hand illusion is controlled by the performer, not independently animated. Your real hand passes through an opening in a modified glove, while the glove and a lightweight fake forearm stump create the appearance of a detached hand. Keep the assembly comfortable and removable, hide the access point with a sleeve or staging, and use deliberate movements.
What you will make
This project produces a wearable prop consisting of:
- a modified glove that looks like the visible hand;
- lightweight foam and stuffing to shape the fingers and palm;
- a lightweight fake forearm stump;
- a fabric cuff to help conceal the construction; and
- a removable wrist closure, such as hook-and-loop tape.
Make: project author Collin Cunningham describes the core illusion this way: “In actuality, what people are seeing is your hand, passing straight through a ‘dummy’ glove with an attached fake stump of an arm.” The Make: project estimates a few hours for a basic build, with time varying according to the level of detail.

Materials and tools
Core materials
- Two matching long-cuff work gloves
- A lightweight bottle or similarly light material for the stump
- Soft foam or upholstery foam
- Polyester stuffing
- Fabric for covering the stump and making a cuff
- Hook-and-loop tape or another removable closure
- Tape and adhesive suitable for your chosen materials
Tools
- Scissors
- Wire cutters, if using wire
- A craft knife, used carefully if cutting a bottle
- A glue gun or other suitable adhesive applicator

How to build the living severed hand
1. Choose and fit the gloves
Choose two matching long-cuff gloves. Try one on and check that it fits comfortably and can be concealed beneath the sleeve you plan to wear. Decide which glove will be modified and which will be worn normally.
2. Make the access opening
Lay the glove to be modified flat and make an opening in the palm large enough for your real hand to pass through without forcing the seams. Preserve as much of the glove’s structure as possible so it retains a recognizable hand shape.
3. Shape the fingers and palm
Add modest amounts of soft foam and stuffing inside the glove to give the visible hand volume while leaving room for your real hand to move it. If you use wire to shape a finger, fully enclose its ends in foam and stuffing. Keep the finished prop light and remove any sharp or exposed parts.

4. Attach a lightweight stump
Make a short, lightweight forearm stump and cover it with fabric. If you use a cut bottle, cover or blunt every cut edge. Attach the stump securely to the modified glove without making the assembly cumbersome.
5. Add a removable wrist closure
Use hook-and-loop tape or another removable closure to hold the modified glove assembly in place. It should stay secure during gentle movement but come off without force. Do not tighten it enough to restrict circulation.
6. Test the silhouette and fit
Put on the modified glove and planned sleeve, then check the illusion from the audience’s expected viewing angle. Make adjustments so the hand reads clearly and the access opening and wrist are hidden. Rehearse before performing.
How to wear and operate it
Pass your real hand through the opening in the modified glove. The real hand supplies the movement; the glove and stump complete the visual. Keep the wrist in a comfortable position and take breaks if the pose becomes uncomfortable.

Try occasional, deliberate movements:
- Hold still until the hand is noticed.
- Curl a finger, then pause.
- Point or reach briefly.
- Drag or tap the fingers a short distance on a surface.
Use the movements that your fit and construction allow comfortably. Rehearsal helps you coordinate movement with the sleeve and staging.
How to hide the method
Conceal the wrist and access opening with a long sleeve, table edge, prop, or set dressing. Stage the hand so the audience can read its shape while the sleeve or another visual barrier hides how it is controlled. For photographs or video, choose a viewing angle and framing that obscure the access point.
Wearable illusion or cast hand?
A wearable glove and a separately cast prop hand serve different purposes. Choose the wearable route when you want the performer’s real hand to control movement; consider a cast hand when your priority is a detailed static display. A static fake hand is a different purchase path from a wearable illusion. Morphsuits reports that its former latex-glove severed-hand costume was created in 2013 and later discontinued; that is historical information, not evidence that the product is currently available.
Safety and comfort
- Keep the assembly light, removable, and comfortable; take breaks if holding the pose becomes uncomfortable.
- Fully enclose any wire and cover or blunt cut edges.
- Use ventilation and eye protection when cutting or applying materials, and follow product labels.
- Test the assembly and rehearse before wearing it for a performance.
- Present it as a harmless costume or stage illusion, not as a real injury or emergency.
