You can make a decorative macramé starfish with six lengths of cord, scissors, and a way to hold the work still. The featured method uses one filler cord and five working cords, horizontal clove hitch knots, and a mirrored knotting sequence repeated for five arms. Turn the work over at the end, tie the corresponding loose ends together, and trim the tails. The arms can remain naturally open or be sewn closed for a more compact finish.
This is the method described by Cuckoo4Design in its tutorial updated March 31, 2026. The author calls the project easy and beginner-friendly, but the published time, cost, and cord quantities are personal project estimates rather than guarantees for every maker.

Materials and tools
Gather the following before you begin. The featured example uses 3 mm macramé cord. The author also reports making a version with 4 mm ivory cord, but the tutorial does not establish that either thickness is universally better or that both produce the same size with the same amount of cord.
| Item | How much or which type | Purpose | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Macramé cord | Six pieces, approximately 11 feet (about 3.35 m) each; 3 mm is the featured example | One piece becomes the filler cord and five pieces form the working cords | Required |
| Scissors | One sharp pair | Cutting and trimming the finished tails | Required |
| Duct tape | A few strips | Holding the filler cord to a hard surface in the author’s setup | Required for this setup |
| Hard work surface | A stable, smooth surface | Provides resistance while you make the knots | Required |
| Corkboard and pins | Optional alternative | Securing the cords in a way commonly used by macramé crafters | Optional |
| Extra macramé yarn | Optional | Sewing the arms closed after the back has been joined | Optional |
Cutting six equal lengths is a practical starting point, not a strict universal cutting chart. The author says she sometimes added cord to one piece, had leftovers on others, and reused those remnants for smaller projects. Cord fiber, thickness, hand tension, and the amount left for joining all change how much you actually consume.

What the horizontal clove hitch does
The central knot in this project is the horizontal clove hitch. Julia Konya, the tutorial’s author, defines it as “two loops of working cord around a filler cord in a horizontal line.” In other words, the filler cord stays comparatively straight while the working cord wraps around it twice, producing two neighboring loops that sit across the row.
For this starfish, consistency matters more than pulling as hard as possible. Make both loops sit beside one another, then snug them until the row is firm without crushing the cord. A loose hitch can leave gaps; an over-tight hitch can make the arm buckle and make later rows difficult to read.

Prepare the work area
- Choose a stable surface. Place the project on a hard surface where the filler cord can remain straight while you work. The author uses duct tape rather than a specialty macramé board.
- Identify the filler cord. Select one of the six lengths. Leave an accessible end for the final joining step, and tape the working portion down so it does not slide.
- Arrange the other five cords. Keep them untangled and within reach. They will be attached to the filler and then used in the repeated arm pattern.
- Check your orientation. Decide which side will face up while knotting and keep the same orientation each time you repeat the arm. Consistent direction makes the five points look related rather than randomly rotated.
Step-by-step: knot one arm
1. Attach the working cords to the filler
Use the five remaining pieces to begin the arm pattern. Attach each to the taped filler cord with horizontal clove hitch knots. Work across the filler in a horizontal line, keeping the knots adjacent and the cord spacing as even as you can.
At this stage, do not try to sculpt the final point by pulling one cord dramatically tighter than the others. Establish a readable row first. The starfish shape comes from the direction of the following passes and from progressively changing which cord acts as the filler.

2. Make the first horizontal clove hitches
Take the working cord specified by your layout, wrap it around the filler, and form the first loop. Make the second loop immediately beside it, then snug both loops into a horizontal pair. Repeat across the section you are shaping.
Keep the filler cord under steady tension with your taped end. If the filler bows or shifts, stop and retape it before continuing; a moving filler changes the angle of every knot that follows.
3. Reverse the direction for the mirrored pass
The arm is shaped by working the pattern in the opposite direction. Treat this as a mirror of the first pass: keep the same knot type, but work back across the developing arm rather than continuing indefinitely in one direction.
The source tutorial’s key maneuver is progressive: cords that served as working cords in one pass are brought into service as filler cords in the next. This change distributes the knots and narrows the arm toward its outer end. Do not substitute a different knot simply because the row begins to angle; preserve the horizontal clove hitch and change the cord serving as the guide.

4. Keep the arm tension even
After each pass, pause to inspect the outline. The knots should form a coherent arm rather than a flat strip with random loops. Pull neighboring knots into alignment with your fingers, but leave enough flexibility to turn the piece over later.
If one side is longer, compare the tension of the corresponding loops instead of cutting immediately. Small adjustments made before the next pass are easier than correcting a whole arm after the cords are joined.
Repeat the arm pattern five times
Repeat the same arm sequence until you have five arms. The tutorial describes repeating the pattern five times, not making five unrelated shapes. Use the same order of operations for every arm:
- Secure the filler or guide cord.
- Work the horizontal clove hitch row.
- Mirror the direction on the return pass.
- Progressively use the cords as filler cords as the arm develops.
- Check that the new arm follows the same general scale and tension as the previous ones.
Keep the loose ends identifiable while you work. They are needed for the joining step, and cords that become buried under the piece can be difficult to separate later. The author’s method uses tape to hold the work in place while the arms are formed; remove that tape only after the five-arm pattern is complete.

Join the starfish on the back
- Remove the tape carefully. Lift the finished knotting from the hard surface without pulling individual knots out of alignment.
- Turn the piece over. The back is the side where the loose ends will be tied together.
- Match opposite loose ends. Bring the corresponding loose ends together across the back. The purpose is to close the five-arm shape, so check that each connection supports the outline rather than twisting an arm.
- Tie the pairs together. Use the loose ends to secure the matching sections. Work around the back until the starfish holds its shape.
- Inspect before trimming. Turn the piece over again and make sure no arm has folded or rotated. Tighten a joining tie from the back if necessary.
- Trim the tails. Cut the excess only after all joins are secure. Leave enough tail for the knot to remain stable.
The tutorial presents sewing the arms together as optional. If you want a more closed or tidy edge, use additional macramé yarn to sew the arms after the back ties are in place. Sewing is a finishing choice, not a required part of the basic construction.
Two ways to hold the cords while knotting
| Setup | How it works | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duct tape on a hard surface | Tape the filler cord down and work directly against the surface | Matches the author’s method and requires no specialty board | The tape must be repositioned or removed carefully, and the surface must resist sliding |
| Corkboard and pins | Pin the filler and adjust the work as the arm develops | Offers a familiar way for macramé crafters to anchor cords | Requires a corkboard and pins; the tutorial does not establish that either is necessary |
Choose the setup that keeps the filler cord straight and your hands comfortable. The project does not require a dedicated macramé workboard according to the author’s method.

How long it takes, what it costs, and how difficult it is
The project card lists 45 minutes of active time, 45 minutes total time, easy difficulty, and an estimated cost of $0–$15. Those figures are Cuckoo4Design’s published estimates for the project in 2026, not independently measured results. Your first attempt may take longer while you learn to keep the loops aligned, and your cost depends on whether you already have cord, scissors, tape, or a board.
The six approximately 11-foot cuts are also the author’s project measurements. They should not be treated as a promise that every cord thickness, fiber, or tension will use exactly the same amount. The author specifically reports using both 3 mm and 4 mm cord in different versions.

Troubleshooting common problems
| What you see | Likely issue during this method | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The row wanders instead of staying horizontal | The filler cord moved or was not held under steady tension | Pause, straighten the filler, and retape it before making the next pair of loops |
| One arm is noticeably wider than the others | Loop spacing or knot tension changed between passes | Compare the arm with the previous one, ease overly tight loops, and use the same mirrored sequence for the remaining arms |
| The arm looks flat rather than tapered | The cords were not progressively exchanged as filler cords | On the next pass, follow the pattern’s progressive change of filler cords instead of keeping one guide cord for every row |
| Gaps appear between loops | The two loops of a hitch were not snugged together | Slide the neighboring loops into a horizontal pair and apply even, moderate tension |
| The piece twists when turned over | Loose ends were matched without checking the arm orientation | Lay the starfish flat, identify corresponding ends, and tie only after each arm points in the intended direction |
| You run short on one cord | Individual cord use varied during knotting | Use the remaining tails where possible, add cord before the shortage reaches a joining point, and remember that the author reports unequal leftovers in her own project |
| The back feels unstable | Opposite loose ends were tied too loosely or trimmed too soon | Retie the affected connection from the back, test the shape, and trim only after the join holds |
Choosing between 3 mm and 4 mm cord
Use 3 mm cord if you want to follow the featured example as closely as possible. The tutorial demonstrates that thickness and bases its six-piece, approximately 11-foot estimate on the author’s project. A 4 mm ivory cord is documented as an alternative the author used.
The available information does not provide a controlled comparison of finished dimensions, knot count, stiffness, or cord consumption between the two thicknesses. Therefore, treat 4 mm as a documented variation rather than a guaranteed substitute with identical results. Whichever thickness you choose, keep the same knot direction and watch the shape as you repeat the five arms.

Ways to use and finish the completed piece
The finished starfish is shown as home décor and as a clothing pin or embellishment. Those examples support light decorative use. They do not establish that the piece is suitable as a toy, for food contact, or for carrying a load, so avoid presenting it for those purposes without separate safety information.
For a relaxed decorative look, leave the arm edges as they are after tying and trimming the back. For a more compact outline, sew the arms closed with extra macramé yarn. Keep the sewing on the back where possible so the front remains focused on the horizontal knot pattern.
Practical tips for a cleaner first attempt
- Lay all six cords out before cutting or taping so you can spot tangles early.
- Mark the filler cord mentally or with a temporary, removable tag; confusing it with a working cord makes the mirrored sequence harder to follow.
- Make the first arm slowly and use it as your visual reference for the next four.
- Keep the knot pairs adjacent rather than spreading them to fill space. Shape comes from the sequence and changing filler cords, not from random spacing.
- Turn the piece over only when the five-arm pattern is complete, as described in the tutorial, so the loose ends remain available for the final joins.
- Save usable leftovers. The author says she reuses extra cord for small projects, which is a practical way to avoid wasting uneven remnants.
What to expect from this beginner project
This starfish is manageable because it relies on one main knot and a repeated five-arm structure rather than a large vocabulary of decorative knots. The parts that demand the most attention are keeping the filler steady, making the two loops of each horizontal clove hitch sit together, mirroring the return pass, and preserving enough loose cord for the back join.
Follow the same sequence for all five arms, then make the final shape decisions from the back: tie the corresponding ends, inspect the front, trim, and sew only if you want the arms closed. That order keeps the construction reversible for as long as possible and gives you a chance to correct orientation before the tails are cut.
