Turn leftover boards into a red, white, and blue centerpiece by cutting a few blocks, sanding them smooth, painting them, and arranging them on a tray or table. The most adaptable approach is a set of painted blocks: use three varied heights for a firecracker display, or arrange red, white, and blue pieces as a flag.

You do not need one exact lumber size or a perfect pattern. Match the plan to the scraps you have, keep every piece stable when stood or grouped, and treat the dimensions below as a proven starting option rather than a required specification.
Choose the centerpiece style before cutting
Three related scrap-wood approaches work well for a patriotic table display. Choosing the arrangement first prevents you from cutting pieces that do not suit the space or the amount of wood on hand.
| Approach | Wood and layout | Extra supplies or tools | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firecracker blocks | Three 2×2 pieces cut to 4 inches, 5½ inches, and 7½ inches | Saw, drill and small bit, sanding block or sandpaper, paint, brushes, twine, and glue | A compact centerpiece, tray, or mantel grouping with varied heights |
| Flag blocks | Scrap 2×4 blocks painted red, white, and blue; blue pieces form the upper-left field and the other pieces form alternating stripes | Paint and brushes; tape, stencils, or freehand tools for details | A recognizable flag pattern that can be scaled to the table or tray |
| Star-and-pocket board | A horizontal scrap board with a fabric pocket wrapped around one end | Brown wax, fabric, glue, painted wooden stars, and optional greenery or a small flag | A longer, farmhouse-style arrangement when fabric embellishment is available |
The firecracker measurements come from Ana White’s 2×2 Scrap Wood Firecracker Decor plan. Its project-page copy says, “Made from easy-to-find 2×2 scrap wood, this patriotic decor project is quick to build, fun to paint, and perfect for styling in a centerpiece, tray, or mantel display.” That sentence is the author’s description of the project, not a controlled test of construction time or durability.
Gather wood, paint, and simple tools
Core materials
- Dry scrap wood with faces flat enough to paint and edges that can stand or be grouped securely.
- Red, white, and blue craft paint. If you are shopping,
red white and blue acrylic craft paint setdescribes the color combination supported by these projects; the tutorials do not establish a particular brand or finish. - Small paintbrushes. Keep one brush for each color if you want to avoid rinsing between coats.
- Sandpaper or a sanding block.
Project-dependent tools and embellishments
- A saw if your scraps need to be shortened. Measure each piece before cutting.
- A drill and small bit for the firecracker version if you want to attach twine through a hole.
- Twine and craft glue for a fuse-like or wrapped detail.
- Painter’s tape for crisp stripes, or stencils for stars and lettering.
- Clear sealer, used only if you want an additional finish; it is optional in the cited firecracker plan.
- For the board variation: brown wax, a piece of fabric, glue, painted wooden stars, greenery, or a small flag.
When cutting or drilling, secure the wood and follow the tool maker’s safety directions. Wear eye protection, keep hands clear of the blade or bit, and let power tools stop completely before setting them down.
Plan the size around your scraps and table
Measure the surface where the centerpiece will sit before cutting. Leave enough room for place settings, serving dishes, or a tray handle. Blocks can stand in a row, cluster in a shallow tray, or sit in front of a longer board.
Using the three-piece firecracker starting point
For a stepped group, mark three 2×2 pieces at 4 inches, 5½ inches, and 7½ inches. Those lengths create visible height changes while keeping the set small enough for a centerpiece. They are one example from the Ana White plan, not a mandatory cut list. If your scraps are shorter, make a lower stepped set; if they are wider, keep the heights but change the footprint to fit your container.

Planning a flag from mixed scraps
The flag tutorial uses scrap 2×4 blocks rather than a fixed cut schedule. Count the pieces you have and sketch the arrangement on paper: reserve a group for the blue upper-left field, then alternate red and white pieces to suggest stripes. A quick dry layout shows whether the blocks have similar thicknesses and whether the finished flag will sit level.
Planning the star-and-pocket board
Choose a board long enough to support a fabric pocket and leave room for painted stars. Because this design is horizontal, it works on a console or dining table where a row of blocks might be too tall. The fabric pocket can hold greenery or a small flag, but neither is required for the wood-and-paint portion.
Build the painted block centerpiece
1. Inspect, measure, and mark
Remove loose splinters and check that each piece has a reasonably flat base. Mark cut lines with a pencil and label pieces if you are making a flag, so the blue field and stripe blocks stay organized. Arrange the unpainted wood on the table to confirm the footprint before you cut anything.
2. Cut only what the layout requires
Use a saw to cut the marked pieces, or keep the existing lengths if they already fit. For the firecracker example, cut the 2×2 stock to 4 inches, 5½ inches, and 7½ inches. Make square cuts so the blocks do not rock. A flag made from existing 2×4 offcuts may need no cutting at all.
3. Sand and remove dust
Lightly sand rough faces, corners, and freshly cut ends. The goal is a paint-ready surface, not a furniture-smooth finish. Wipe away all sawdust before opening the paint. Do Dodson Designs specifically recommends lightly sanding rough surfaces and wiping off sawdust in its DIY wood block crafts tutorial.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Paint the base colors
Paint blocks red, white, or blue according to your chosen layout. Work on a protected surface and let each color dry before stacking or placing pieces together. Apply tape for straight bands, or use a stencil or freehand brush for stars and other marks. Keep the paint scheme simple enough that the wood shapes remain easy to read.

5. Add firecracker details, if desired
For the stepped firecracker set, drill a small hole near the top of a block only if you want to thread or glue twine as a fuse detail. Wrap twine around a block or secure a short piece with craft glue. The drill, bit, twine, and glue are listed with the firecracker project as supplies, but the centerpiece can remain a plain painted-block arrangement without them.
6. Arrange the dry pieces
Set the blocks on their broadest, most stable faces. Place the tallest firecracker toward the back or center and the shorter pieces beside it, or group all three in a compact cluster. For a flag, put the blue blocks at the upper left and alternate red and white blocks across the remaining area. Shift pieces until the display reads clearly from the main viewing angle.
7. Finish only after the layout works
Add a clear sealer if you want one, following the product’s label for application and drying. It is an optional step rather than a documented requirement. Do not glue the blocks together unless you want a permanent sculpture; leaving them separate makes it easier to change from a flag to a firecracker arrangement for another display.
Make the flag pattern read clearly
A flag layout depends more on color placement than on exact block dimensions. Use the upper-left blue field as the visual anchor, then create alternating red and white bands beside or below it. Similar block heights help the pattern look intentional, while small variations can give a handmade appearance.
Before painting, photograph or sketch the dry arrangement. Paint all pieces assigned to one color in a batch, then allow them to dry before taping adjacent stripes. Press tape edges down on a dry base coat and remove the tape carefully while the detail color is still workable, so the stripe edge is less likely to lift.
Stars can be stenciled onto the blue blocks, painted freehand, or omitted. The cited tutorial presents stencils or freehand decoration as choices, not requirements. If your blocks are too narrow for individual stars, a single small white mark or an unembellished blue field keeps the composition legible.

Turn the same scraps into firecracker shapes
The three-height arrangement gives you a quick alternative when a flag would require more pieces than you have. Paint the shortest, middle, and tallest 2×2 blocks in patriotic colors, then line them up so the height difference is obvious. Twine at the top can suggest a fuse; a small amount of glue keeps it from slipping.

A blue tallest block creates a strong focal point, while alternating colors produces a more evenly distributed display. Keep the bases aligned on a tray or board so the grouping looks deliberate even when the individual scraps are different lengths.
Optional star-and-pocket board variation
For a horizontal centerpiece, paint a scrap board, then brush brown wax around its edges to create an aged effect. Wrap fabric around one end and glue it in place to form a pocket. Add painted wooden stars to the board and use the pocket for greenery or a small flag. Circle Heart Creations describes these elements in its easy Americana craft tutorial as embellishments; you can leave out any item that does not suit your materials or table.
Keep the pocket shallow enough that greenery does not make the board tip. Test the empty board first, then add the lightest arrangement that stays upright. Because fabric and wax change the texture of the piece, reserve this version for a display where the board can remain undisturbed.
Troubleshoot common scrap-wood problems
The blocks wobble
Check the bottom edge for a high corner or a slanted cut. Sand the high spot gradually, or rotate the piece to find a more stable face. A tray can contain minor differences, but do not stack an unstable block where it could fall onto a candle, dish, or person.

The paint looks rough or dusty
Dust left on the surface can make paint drag and leave bumps. Stop, let the coat dry, lightly sand the rough area, wipe it clean, and repaint. Thin, even coats are easier to control than one heavy coat.

Stripe edges bleed
Wait until the base color is dry, press tape firmly along the edge, and brush away from the tape rather than forcing paint underneath it. If a small bleed remains, touch up the base color with a fine brush after the stripe dries.
The flag is hard to recognize
Increase the contrast between adjacent blocks and restore the blue upper-left field. A simple red-and-white alternation usually communicates the stripes better than adding many small decorations. Reposition the grouping so viewers see the pattern from the front rather than from above.
You do not have a saw or drill
Use scraps at their existing lengths and choose the flag arrangement or a low firecracker cluster. The cutting and drilling steps are optional adaptations, not prerequisites for painting and arranging blocks.

Place the display on a level, dry surface and keep it clear of open flames, wet floral foam, and food-contact areas. If you used a sealer, allow the labeled cure period before putting the piece into regular service. Since the cited projects do not report durability testing, paint brand performance, cost, or completion time, treat the centerpiece as decorative craftwork and inspect glued twine, fabric, and painted details before each seasonal use.
Store the blocks separately in a dry box or wrap them in soft paper so painted faces do not rub together. Keeping the pieces loose preserves the main advantage of a scrap-wood design: next year you can rearrange the same blocks as a flag, a firecracker trio, or a new tray display.
