You can embroider a small, badge-shaped patch as a personal craft or needlework activity: choose a simple original design, gather floss and a hand-embroidery needle, and practice stitches on scrap fabric before working on the patch. A homemade patch is not an official Scouting America merit badge. If you are completing an official award, use the current requirements and work with a merit badge counselor.
First, decide what kind of “merit badge” you mean
The phrase can refer to three different things: a personal badge-style craft, a temporary patch made for a needlework activity, or an official Scouting America merit badge. They are not interchangeable. Keep a personal design original and clearly unofficial; do not present a handmade craft as an award or reproduce protected Scouting insignia.
Make an original embroidered badge-style patch
Gather a small set of supplies
- Fabric for the design and a scrap piece for practice
- Embroidery floss and hand-embroidery needles
- Scissors
- A small embroidery hoop, if you find one helpful
A hand embroidery kit with floss and needles can provide the basic tools. No particular brand is required or represented as tested here.

Plan the design and practice
- Draw or transfer a simple, original design onto the fabric. Avoid Scouting America names, marks, and insignia if the project is personal rather than an authorized Scouting item.
- Choose stitches that suit the shapes in your design. Try them on scrap fabric first so you can see how they look before stitching the main piece.
- Embroider the design, then finish the piece in a way that suits its intended use. Scouting America’s test-lab page describes a sampler or temporary uniform patch, but does not provide a complete patch-construction tutorial or prescribe a finishing method.
Use the Scouting America test-lab activity only within its stated scope
Scouting America’s Sewing & Needlework Test Lab includes an option to make a small hand-embroidery sampler or temporary uniform patch using six stitches from its published menu. The listed choices are running, back, stem, chain, blanket, herringbone, chevron, feather, weave, seed, fishbone, satin, and cross stitches, plus surface couching and French knots. The activity permits a choice of six; it does not specify one required combination.

The page states that its requirements and surveys are available until December 31, 2026. Check the live page for current information before starting, particularly if you plan to use the activity after that date. It is a test-lab activity, not a permanent merit badge merely because you complete the sampler or patch. If you are participating, document your work and discuss it with the appropriate counselor.
How an official merit badge differs
For an official award, follow Scouting America’s Merit Badges hub: select a subject with your unit leader, work with a merit badge counselor, show your completed work, and consult the latest requirements because they can change. Making an embroidered patch alone does not earn an official merit badge.

The Scout Shop’s merit badge information says badges are available through Scout Shops or Council Trading Posts with proper advancement paperwork, and online via Scoutbook.

Scouting America’s Guide to Awards and Insignia, revised July 2024, excludes merit badges and “merit badge knockoffs” from its custom patch production guidelines. It also says, “All third party suppliers of custom embroidered patches and emblems are required to be licensed with Scouting America.” Councils and units seeking authorized custom patches should use the guide’s approved channels and comply with its design and approval rules. For an individual craft, an original, clearly unofficial design avoids implying that it is an authorized award or insignia.
