You can give a plain IKEA chest of drawers a convincing burl-wood appearance in an afternoon by applying printed self-adhesive furniture film. The result is a faux wood-grain surface, not solid burl wood or a real burl veneer, so the quality of the finish depends on careful measuring, clean preparation, gradual application, and neat trimming.

The documented HEMNES makeover used burl-print contact paper, basic cutting and smoothing tools, and roughly one hour of application. A separate BRIMNES project shows the same approach with three rolls of film and replacement hardware. Use the steps below to plan coverage, avoid bubbles, finish corners, and make sure new pulls match your dresser’s actual holes.

What this IKEA contact-paper hack actually does

Contact paper is a printed adhesive film. When it is applied to drawer fronts and cabinet panels, its printed pattern creates the visual impression of burl wood; it does not change the underlying material into wood veneer. That distinction matters when you set expectations for texture, longevity, and removal.

The HEMNES example

Lauren of Bless’er House documented the title-matched HEMNES chest-of-drawers project in 2022. Her introduction describes “How to create a high end looking burl wood furniture finish on a plain dresser by doing this IKEA dresser hack using contact paper for just $30.” She listed the dresser, burl wood print contact paper, scissors, a pen or pencil, and a credit card, gift card, or wallpaper smoother. Replacement knobs were optional.

The BRIMNES example

The House of Jazzy used the method on an IKEA BRIMNES. Her process emphasizes a clean, dry, dust-free surface, removing the handles before covering the drawers, exposing only a little adhesive at a time, smoothing as the backing is pulled away, and trimming edges with a craft knife. She reported a 6.5-inch center-to-center handle spacing on her dresser; that is a measurement of her particular unit, not a universal IKEA specification.

Materials, tools, and a coverage plan

Item Purpose Planning notes
Burl wood contact paper or furniture film Creates the printed pattern Buy enough usable area for every panel plus 1–2 inches of excess on each cut piece.
IKEA dresser HEMNES and BRIMNES are documented examples Measure your exact model and each surface; drawer sizes can differ by design.
Scissors Rough-cut film from the roll Use for the initial sizing before final edge trimming.
Pen or pencil Marks dimensions and orientation on the liner Label pieces so the grain direction stays consistent.
Credit card, gift card, or wallpaper smoother Presses film down and pushes out air A card is an adequate improvised smoother in the documented projects.
Craft knife Makes controlled cuts along edges and corners Use a sharp blade and a stable cutting surface.
Replacement knobs or pulls Optional hardware update Purchase only after measuring the existing hole spacing and checking the supplied screws.

Estimate film without guessing

  1. List every surface you will cover: each drawer front, the cabinet sides, the top, or any other visible panel.
  2. Measure the width and height of each surface. Add approximately 1–2 inches to both dimensions so the film can wrap an edge or be trimmed cleanly.
  3. Multiply the adjusted dimensions by the number of identical pieces. Keep separate totals for pieces that need the print running in a particular direction.
  4. Compare that total with the roll’s stated width and length. Account for offcuts, pattern matching, and mistakes; a roll that appears to equal the calculated area may not yield the required shapes efficiently.
  5. Lay out a cutting plan on paper before opening the roll. Mark the top edge of every piece and keep the grain orientation consistent across adjacent drawer fronts.

The cited projects do not establish a universal roll width, coverage rate, or seam technique. If one surface is wider than the film, decide where a join will be least visible and test the layout on scrap. Do not assume a printed pattern will disappear at a seam.

Measure hardware before ordering

Remove a handle and measure from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the next. Also note the hole diameter, the thickness of the drawer front, and the screw length supplied with replacement hardware. The House of Jazzy’s 6.5-inch spacing is useful as an example only. Her warning is simple: “So measure first.”

Hardware choice What to check Likely work involved
Keep the original pulls Whether the existing finish works with the new pattern Remove, cover the drawer, then reinstall through the original holes.
New pulls with the same spacing Center-to-center measurement and screw fit Usually uses the existing holes if the fasteners reach securely.
Different spacing or single knobs Whether old holes will show and whether new holes can be positioned safely May require filling, disguising, or drilling; plan before applying film.

Prepare the dresser before applying film

  1. Empty the drawers and move them to a work area where you can reach all edges.
  2. Remove every handle or knob. Keep the screws in labeled containers so each set returns to the correct drawer.
  3. Clean the surface until it is free of dust, grease, and residue. The BRIMNES account specifically recommends a clean, dry, dust-free surface.
  4. Let the surface dry completely. Adhesive film applied over moisture or loose dust can develop visible bumps or weak spots.
  5. Inspect the finish for peeling paint, raised chips, or deep dents. The film follows the shape underneath, so repair or smooth obvious defects before measuring.
  6. Test a small piece in an inconspicuous area. No cited source establishes compatibility with every IKEA finish, lifespan, or damage-free removal, so treat this test as a practical precaution and follow the film manufacturer’s directions.

Apply the contact paper step by step

1. Cut one panel with working excess

Measure the drawer front or cabinet panel and mark the adjusted dimensions on the liner. Cut with roughly 1–2 inches of extra material on every side. That excess gives you something to wrap around an edge or trim back after the face is positioned.

2. Align the first few inches

Place the film printed-side up and orient the grain before exposing adhesive. Peel back only a few inches of the backing. Align the exposed edge with the top or side of the panel, checking that it is straight before pressing it down.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Work from the center outward

Use a credit card, gift card, or wallpaper smoother to press the film from the middle toward the edges. Cat Meschia’s advice, quoted by Sarah Everett in Apartment Therapy’s 2024 coverage, is: “Press firmly, starting from the middle and moving outwards,” as you alternate peeling back more liner and smoothing the newly exposed section.

4. Advance the liner gradually

Pull away a short section of backing, smooth that section, and repeat. Keeping the adhesive area small lets you lift and realign a misdirected edge before the entire piece is committed. Do not yank the liner away in one motion; that makes wrinkles and trapped air harder to correct.

5. Wrap the straight edges

Once the face is flat, press the extra film over the side edge. Run the smoother along the edge to define the fold, then trim the underside with a craft knife. Leave enough material to cover the edge fully, but remove loose flaps that could catch during drawer movement.

6. Cut reliefs at corners

At an outside corner, make small relief cuts in the excess so the film can fold without bunching. Several short cuts are easier to control than one deep diagonal cut. Press each tab around the corner, then trim overlapping material with a sharp blade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Finish the drawer underside

Check the lower edge and the areas near the drawer sides before reinstalling the drawer. If a corner has lifted, trim the excess cleanly and press the remaining film down rather than leaving a ragged flap.

8. Repeat with matching orientation

Cover one drawer at a time. Use the first completed piece as a reference for grain direction and edge placement, but measure every drawer because small dimensional differences can change the cut.

9. Reinstall hardware only after the film is secure

Locate the original holes from the back of the drawer, pierce the film carefully, and fasten the pulls without overtightening. Excessive pressure can crease the film around a hole.

How to get cleaner corners, edges, and seams

Most visible defects come from rushing the perimeter rather than from the center of the panel. Keep the film supported while cutting, use a fresh craft-knife blade, and make several light passes instead of forcing one cut. A metal ruler can guide a long straight trim if it is held firmly and kept away from the finished face.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a panel is wider than the roll, the documented sources do not establish a guaranteed invisible seam or a preferred overlap. Plan the join where hardware, a side edge, or a less prominent line will conceal it. Dry-fit the pieces first, align the printed pattern as closely as possible, and follow the specific film manufacturer’s instructions for butt joints or overlaps. Practice on an offcut before committing to a drawer front.

A hair dryer, squeegee, or craft knife appears in contributor suggestions collected by Apartment Therapy in 2024. Treat heat as a creator tip, not manufacturer guidance: use only the temperature and method allowed by your film’s instructions, keep the dryer moving, and test a scrap first. Too much heat can make a thin film easier to stretch and misalign.

Troubleshoot common application problems

Symptom Likely cause Correction
Large bubbles under the center Too much backing was removed at once or the film was pressed from an edge inward. Lift the nearest section carefully if the adhesive allows, then reapply while smoothing from the center outward.
Small wrinkles near an edge Insufficient excess or the film was pulled sideways while wrapping. Make a small relief cut, flatten the section, and trim only after the edge is fully pressed.
Ragged trim line Dull blade, unstable panel, or one heavy cutting pass. Use a sharp blade, support the panel, and make controlled light passes.
Pattern looks rotated or mismatched Pieces were cut without marking orientation. Label the liner before cutting and keep the same grain direction on neighboring fronts.
Film will not stay down Dust, grease, moisture, or an incompatible surface finish. Stop, clean and dry the area, consult the film directions, and evaluate the hidden-area test before continuing.
New pull does not line up The replacement spacing differs from the dresser’s actual holes. Measure center-to-center spacing again; do not rely on a model name or another owner’s measurement.

Durability, removal, and care: what is not established

No cited source provides an independent lifespan test, quantified durability figure, or verified removal result. Adhesion can depend on the particular film, the dresser’s finish, preparation, temperature, and everyday use. For that reason, do not promise a fixed service life or damage-free removal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the manufacturer’s care and removal instructions with the project. If you may want to restore the original finish later, test removal on a hidden area before covering the entire dresser and avoid assuming that a film marketed as removable will behave identically on every painted or laminated surface.

When this makeover is a good fit

  • Choose it when you want a dramatic printed wood look without buying a veneer-ready dresser or learning veneer installation.
  • Plan extra time when the dresser has many drawers, curved details, wide panels, or a pattern that must be matched across seams.
  • Keep the original hardware if you want the simplest installation; replace pulls only after confirming measurements and fastener fit.
  • Use the project as a controlled cosmetic update, not as evidence that every film will withstand every environment or remove cleanly.

With a clean surface, measured pieces, 1–2 inches of trimming allowance, gradual liner removal, and center-out smoothing, the HEMNES-style process can produce a polished faux burl appearance on an IKEA dresser. The finish remains printed contact paper, so careful preparation and realistic expectations are as important as the pattern itself.
