For a portrait US Letter image, create a 2,550 × 3,300 pixel canvas for an intended 300-ppi print. Then print it on Letter paper with scaling set to 100% or Actual size. Paint works primarily in pixels, so the final physical size also depends on your printer, paper, orientation, margins, and scaling settings.
The correct pixel size for an 8.5 × 11 image
US Letter paper measures 8.5 × 11 inches in portrait orientation. The landscape version measures 11 × 8.5 inches. The canvas is the image’s pixel dimensions; its aspect ratio determines its shape, while print size is the physical result on paper. Resolution describes the intended number of pixels per inch (ppi) when printed.
Paint does not provide a dependable inch-based page-layout workflow. Instead, choose pixel dimensions based on the intended print resolution:

| Intended resolution | Portrait dimensions | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 72 ppi | 612 × 792 px | Screen use or drafts |
| 96 ppi | 816 × 1,056 px | Basic digital documents |
| 150 ppi | 1,275 × 1,650 px | Basic home printing |
| 200 ppi | 1,700 × 2,200 px | Better-quality documents and graphics |
| 300 ppi | 2,550 × 3,300 px | High-quality printing |
| 600 ppi | 5,100 × 6,600 px | Very high-resolution work |
Calculate pixels by multiplying the page dimension in inches by the intended pixels per inch. For example, 8.5 × 300 equals 2,550 pixels, while 11 × 300 equals 3,300 pixels. These dimensions represent an 8.5 × 11-inch print when printed at 300 ppi; they do not force every print application or printer to use that physical size.

For most printable graphics, forms, screenshots, and text-heavy images, 2,550 × 3,300 pixels is a strong default. For ordinary documents, screenshots, forms, or basic graphics, 1,275 × 1,650 pixels at an intended 150 ppi may be adequate and produces a smaller file. Enlarging a low-resolution image does not restore missing detail and can make it look pixelated. Microsoft explains image resolution in its image-resolution guidance.
Create a new 8.5 × 11 image in Paint
- Open Microsoft Paint.
- Press Ctrl + N, or choose File > New if that menu is visible.
- Find Resize on the toolbar or in an image-related menu. Its location and label can vary between Paint releases.
- Select Pixels, not Percentage.
- Enter 2,550 for Width and 3,300 for Height.
- If Maintain aspect ratio or Lock aspect ratio is enabled, turn it off when entering both dimensions for a blank canvas.
- Select OK.
- Create your artwork or paste content into the canvas.
- Save the file with Ctrl + S.
Use PNG for text, line art, screenshots, and graphics. Use JPEG mainly for photographs when a smaller file is more important than lossless quality. Paint’s interface can change through Windows app updates; Microsoft notes that some newer Paint features depend on Windows 11 and particular Copilot+ hardware, so controls may differ between installations.
Resize an existing image without distorting it
An existing image presents two separate choices: whether to show the whole image, and whether to fill the entire Letter page.
Fit the whole image without cropping
- Create a blank canvas measuring 2,550 × 3,300 pixels.
- Open the source image in Paint or copy it to the clipboard.
- Resize the source image while keeping its aspect ratio locked.
- Paste it onto the Letter-sized canvas.
- Center it or position it as required.
- Fill the unused area with white or another background color.
- Save the finished canvas.
This approach prevents faces, logos, text, and other objects from being stretched. Microsoft’s guidance on maintaining aspect ratio explains why proportional resizing avoids distortion.

Fill the entire Letter page
If the source image has a different shape, you must either crop part of it or distort it. Cropping is normally preferable. Unlocking the aspect ratio and changing width and height independently can make a square or widescreen image look visibly stretched.
- Contain: The entire image remains visible, but blank space may appear.
- Cover: The page is filled, but some source content is cropped.
- Stretch: The page is filled without cropping, but the image may be deformed.
A square image cannot fill a portrait Letter page without cropping or stretching. A 16:9 screenshot will usually leave white space above and below if its proportions are preserved.
Print the image at 8.5 × 11 inches
The pixel dimensions alone do not guarantee an 8.5 × 11-inch print. Configure the printer and print dialog as follows:
Recommended Free Tools
- Save the image.
- In Paint, choose File > Print, or try Ctrl + P if supported by your version.
- Select the intended printer.
- Open Printer Properties, Preferences, or the equivalent settings control.
- Set the paper size to Letter — 8.5 × 11 in.
- Choose Portrait for 8.5 inches wide by 11 inches tall, or Landscape for 11 inches wide by 8.5 inches tall.
- Set scaling to Actual size, 100%, or No scaling.
- Avoid Fit to page when exact physical dimensions matter.
- Check for margin or printable-area warnings.
- Print a test page and measure it with a ruler if the size is critical.
Print-driver wording varies. Microsoft distinguishes a document’s page size from the physical paper size and notes that the printer determines which paper sizes are available. The same distinction matters when printing from Paint; the selected page and paper settings must correspond. See Microsoft’s guidance on page and paper sizes.

How to fill the entire sheet
Most standard home printers cannot print to the extreme edge of a sheet. If your artwork reaches all four edges, you may see white borders or lose part of the design.
- Bordered print: Keep important content inside the printer’s printable area and design intentional margins.
- Borderless print: Enable the printer’s borderless Letter mode, if available. Some drivers enlarge the image slightly, which can clip the edges.
- Professional printing: Ask the print provider whether bleed, crop marks, or a specific file format is required.
Paint can create the artwork, but it does not provide the page-layout, bleed, crop-mark, or color-management controls expected in professional prepress software.
If the image prints too small
Check these settings first:
- Confirm that the paper size is Letter, not A4 or another format.
- Confirm the orientation matches the image.
- Disable Fit to page, automatic shrinking, and other scaling options.
- Select Actual size or 100%.
- Check whether printer margins are forcing the image to be reduced.
- Print a measurement test.
The problem may also come from printing through Photos, a browser, File Explorer, or another application rather than Paint. Each application can apply its own scaling rules.
If the image is cut off
Clipping usually means the artwork exceeds the printer’s printable area, the orientation is wrong, or borderless printing is expanding the image.

- Fast drying, smudge and water resistant surface
- The New standard for extraordinary images
- Choose Fit to printable area if preserving the entire image matters more than exact physical size.
- Reduce the artwork’s content area slightly and leave intentional margins.
- Turn off borderless expansion if the printer offers that option.
- Use a printer that supports borderless Letter printing.
- For precise placement, print through Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, or another page-layout application.
Should you use Paint?
Paint is suitable when you need a single raster image, a quick graphic, or a resized screenshot. It is less suitable when the real requirement is a page with reliable margins, text placement, or print output.
- Word: Better for text-heavy pages, margins, headers, footers, and multiple images.
- PowerPoint: Better for precisely positioning visual elements on a single page and exporting a finished graphic.
- Publisher: Better for page-size control and print-oriented layouts.
- Photos or Snipping Tool: Better for cropping photographs or capturing screenshots before sending them to Paint.
Microsoft documents how Snipping Tool captures can be opened in Paint for further editing, sizing, and annotation. See its Snipping Tool guidance.
For a page-layout job, Microsoft Publisher can explicitly use Letter portrait at 8.5 × 11 inches. Microsoft’s page-size documentation explains that workflow.

FAQ
What pixel size is 8.5 × 11 inches?
At an intended 300 ppi, use 2,550 × 3,300 pixels for portrait Letter. The appropriate pixel dimensions depend on intended resolution; for example, 150 ppi corresponds to 1,275 × 1,650 pixels.

- Handle durable, quick-dry photos right from the printer
- Make memories last with photos that resist fading for decades when printed with Original HP Ink
Is 816 × 1,056 pixels enough for Letter paper?
It can be adequate for a basic document or screen-oriented graphic at an intended 96 ppi, but 1,275 × 1,650 pixels is a better minimum for ordinary home printing and 2,550 × 3,300 pixels is the stronger high-quality target.
Can Paint measure an image directly in inches?
Do not rely on Paint’s resize dialog as an inch-based page setup. The dependable workflow is to choose pixel dimensions, then control the physical result through the print application and printer settings.
How do I make the image landscape?
Use 3,300 × 2,550 pixels for an intended 300-ppi landscape print. In the print dialog, select Letter paper and Landscape orientation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why does my Letter image have white borders?
Most likely, the printer has non-printable margins or borderless printing is disabled. Enable borderless Letter printing if supported, or design intentional margins inside the printable area.
How do I print without cropping?
Use a fit-to-printable-area option if seeing the whole image matters more than exact physical dimensions, or reduce the artwork’s content area and leave margins. Borderless printing may expand and clip the image.
Can I make a Letter-size PDF in Paint?
Paint creates an image rather than a reliable page-layout PDF. You can print to a PDF printer, but the PDF’s page size and scaling depend on the print dialog. For a predictable Letter PDF, use Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, or another page-layout application.
How do I resize an image without stretching it?
Keep its aspect ratio locked while resizing. To place it on a Letter page, preserve the whole image on a Letter-sized canvas and fill any remaining area, or crop the image if it must fill the page.
