In desktop PowerPoint, select a picture and choose Picture Format > Transparency to fade the whole image. To keep a person or object visible while removing the area behind it, choose Picture Format > Remove Background. These are different edits, and Microsoft says picture transparency is not currently available in Microsoft 365 for the web.
A picture used as a slide background has separate controls in the Format Background pane. For a watermark repeated across slides, use the Slide Master workflow.
Key takeaways
- Transparency fades the entire picture, from 0% fully opaque to 100% fully transparent.
- Remove Background marks the area around a subject for removal and lets you refine the selection before keeping changes.
- A picture used as a slide background is edited in the Format Background pane, not with ordinary picture-object controls.
- Microsoft says picture transparency is not currently available in Microsoft 365 for the web; use desktop PowerPoint for the picture edits described here.
- Microsoft notes that background removal is unavailable for certain vector formats, including SVG and WMF.

| Goal | PowerPoint control | What it does | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fade the complete image | Picture Format > Transparency | Makes the subject and background less opaque together. | A faded image or watermark. |
| Remove the area around a subject | Picture Format > Remove Background | Marks the surrounding area for removal while preserving the subject, subject to refinement. | A person, object, or logo over a new background. |
| Adjust a slide-background picture | Format Background > Picture or texture fill | Adjusts the transparency of a picture filling the slide background. | A full-slide image behind text. |
| Repeat a watermark across slides | Slide Master | Lets you place and adjust an image watermark for multiple slides. | A consistent watermark throughout a presentation. |
How do you make the entire picture transparent?
Use the Transparency control when the whole picture should fade, not when you need to isolate a person or object.
#1 Best Overall
- Insert a picture or click an existing picture on the slide.
- Choose Picture Format > Transparency in the documented desktop interface.
- Select a displayed preset, or choose Picture Transparency Options for finer control.
- In the Format Picture pane, use the Transparency slider or enter a percentage.
Microsoft Support lists seven preset levels: 0%, 15%, 30%, 50%, 65%, 80%, and 95%. These are presets, not limits on custom values. Microsoft defines 0% as fully opaque and 100% as fully transparent. A low or moderate value can fade an image while keeping it visible; a high value makes the whole picture less visible.
This does not remove a white, colored, or patterned background. The background fades along with the foreground subject. To keep the subject and remove the backdrop, use background removal instead.
If the Picture Format tab is missing, click the picture; Microsoft notes that the tab appears when a picture is selected.

How do you remove the background around a picture?
Use Remove Background when you want to keep a foreground subject and remove the surrounding area. The automatic selection may need manual refinement.
- Select the picture.
- Choose Picture Format > Remove Background.
- Review the provisional selection; PowerPoint marks the area it intends to remove in magenta.
- Choose Mark Areas to Keep and mark parts of the subject that were selected for removal.
- Choose Mark Areas to Remove and mark background areas that remain.
- Review the result and choose Keep Changes.
Microsoft’s background-removal instructions describe this keep-and-remove refinement process. Check fine edges and details, such as hair, fingers, and thin lines; automatic selection is not guaranteed to be perfect.
After choosing Keep Changes, the edited picture remains in the presentation. If you need a separate reusable image file, right-click the edited picture and choose Save as Picture. Save a copy if you want to retain the original.

How do you adjust a picture used as a PowerPoint slide background?
A picture assigned through slide background settings uses the Format Background pane, rather than the controls for an ordinary picture object.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Design tab and choose Format Background.
- Under Fill, choose Picture or texture fill.
- Insert or select the picture.
- Adjust the background Transparency control.
- Choose Apply to All only if you want the same background on every slide.
Microsoft explains this workflow in its documentation on changing slide backgrounds and its background-picture training. Microsoft distinguishes web capabilities: PowerPoint for the web supports inserting a picture background, while its guidance directs users to desktop PowerPoint for picture-background transparency.
How do you add a repeated watermark?
For a watermark that should appear on multiple slides, use the Slide Master workflow and adjust the image transparency there. Microsoft documents this approach in its picture-transparency help.

PowerPoint for the web can support inserting a picture background, but that is different from adjusting its transparency. If a picture-editing control is missing, confirm that a picture is selected and use the desktop app for the operations described in this guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy is Remove Background unavailable?
Check that a supported picture is selected and that you are using desktop PowerPoint. Microsoft says background removal is unavailable for certain vector formats, including SVG and WMF.
Best Value
| Problem | Possible explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No Picture Format tab | The picture is not selected, or the selected object is not a picture. | Click the image and check whether picture-formatting controls appear. |
| Picture transparency or background removal is missing in the web app | Microsoft directs users to desktop PowerPoint for these picture edits. | Open the presentation in desktop PowerPoint. |
| Remove Background is unavailable for the file | The source may be an unsupported vector format, such as SVG or WMF. | Try a supported raster image or use another editor. |
| Parts of the subject disappear | The automatic selection needs correction. | Use Mark Areas to Keep or Mark Areas to Remove, then review the result. |
| The whole image fades instead of only its background | Transparency was used instead of background removal. | Undo the change and use Picture Format > Remove Background. |
Microsoft lists the vector-format limitation in its official background-removal documentation. If a vector logo cannot be processed, use a supported raster image or another editor.
What is the best method for a logo, watermark, or image behind text?
- Logo without a colored box: use Remove Background if the file is supported and the result can be refined as needed.
- Watermark on one slide: use Transparency to fade the entire picture. For a repeated watermark, use Slide Master.
- Full-slide image behind text: use Format Background, choose Picture or texture fill, and adjust transparency in desktop PowerPoint.
- Reusable transparent image: remove the background, choose Keep Changes, and use Save as Picture to save a separate result.
What should you check before finishing?
- Check text readability over the image at normal slide size.
- Inspect fine edges and small details after background removal.
- Check a cutout against the actual slide color; missed background fragments may be easier to see against a different color.
- Keep the original image separately if you may need to reverse the edit.
- Use Apply to All only when every slide should have the same background treatment.
