How to Make an LED Pop-Up Card: Paper Design and Circuit Basics

An LED pop-up card pairs a folded paper structure with a simple circuit. Learn what parts to use, how to keep the positive and negative paths separate, and how to troubleshoot the build.

An LED pop-up card combines a folded paper structure with a low-voltage circuit. Plan both together: the card must fold around the battery and wiring, while the pop-up leaves the light visible. Most of the documented beginner projects use copper tape to connect an LED to a coin-cell battery; some add a switch or use sticker-style lights.

What you need

Choose materials to match the specific template or kit rather than assuming all LED pop-up cards use the same parts. A typical copper-tape build uses:

  • Cardstock or construction paper for the card and pop-up elements
  • One or more LEDs and a coin-cell battery specified for the chosen design
  • Conductive copper tape
  • Adhesive for the paper structure
  • Optional switch, such as a button board or paper flap, if the design calls for one

Make: describes a project built around a pop-up design and LEDs powered by a 3-volt battery, but that does not make 3 volts a universal requirement for every template. Check the component directions and battery polarity before assembling the circuit (Make: LED Pop-up Cards). SparkFun specifies 3 mm LEDs for its Valentine-card project; treat that size as specific to that design, not a general rule (SparkFun: Light-Up Valentine Cards).

  • 【WITHOUT BATTERIES】Batteries are NOT included! You need to prepare a CR2016 coin cell battery by yourself!

Choose a circuit approach

Loose LED with copper tape

With separate LEDs and copper tape, you place the parts and route the conductive paths yourself. This approach allows custom layouts and makes the circuit’s positive and negative paths visible as you build. SparkFun’s holiday-card project uses a coin cell, copper tape, an LED, and a LilyPad Button Board; its butterfly card uses two LEDs and a battery (SparkFun: Let It Glow Holiday Cards; SparkFun: LED Butterfly Pop Up Card).

LED circuit stickers

Sticker-style lights offer another way to position components. A Chibitronics pop-up birthday-card project lists white LED sticker lights and conductive fabric tape (Chibitronics: How to Make a Light-Up Pop-Up Birthday Card). The available project descriptions do not provide controlled comparisons of cost, durability, or ease against loose LEDs, so choose based on the template, desired switch behavior, available components, and how much space the folded card leaves.

  • Use in Multiple Areas-Self-adhesive, easy to adhere in place,These can be used anywhere you want just one point of light.

Build the card and circuit together

  1. Plan the folded layout. Decide where the pop-up will sit, where the light should show, and where the battery and conductive paths can fit without preventing the card from closing. Leave clearance around raised paper pieces and circuit parts.
  2. Make the paper structure. Cut and fold the card according to its template. Test the pop-up motion before adding the circuit so you can spot collisions or areas that will cover the light.
  3. Lay out separate conductive paths. Route copper tape from the battery’s two sides to opposite LED leads. Keep the positive and negative paths separate; if they touch, the circuit may not work as intended. Make: emphasizes keeping LED leads distinct and connecting them to opposite battery sides (Make: LED Pop-up Cards).
  4. Check polarity and contact. Orient the LED and battery as the template specifies. Press tape firmly against the LED leads and ensure the battery is in contact with the conductors. Add a switch only in the position and manner required by the design.
  5. Test before finishing the decoration. Close and reopen the card while checking that the light remains visible and the circuit parts stay in place. Then attach the pop-up pieces and any translucent paper the design uses. SparkFun’s butterfly project suggests translucent paper to diffuse light through the wings (SparkFun: LED Butterfly Pop Up Card).

Make the light work with the paper design

A bare LED can look like a small point of light; a translucent layer can soften or spread it. Position the LED so the intended feature—such as a wing or greeting—remains visible when the card is open. Also account for the battery and tape when the card is folded: a layout that works flat may be too bulky or may press against the pop-up.

There is no universal battery model or LED size established across these projects. Follow the exact template’s component directions, and check that the finished card closes without sharply bending LED leads or peeling the tape.

Troubleshoot a card that will not light

  • Check polarity: Confirm the LED leads and battery orientation match the template.
  • Check contact: Press copper tape firmly against the LED leads and make sure the battery is properly sandwiched between the conductors.
  • Inspect the tape: Look for lifted tape or a break in either conductive path.
  • Inspect the LED leads: Bending can damage a lead; check that both are intact and still touch the tape.
  • Recheck the layout: Make sure the positive and negative paths have not touched and that folding the card has not shifted the battery or loosened a connection.

SparkFun specifically recommends checking tape adhesion, battery contact, and LED leads when its butterfly-card circuit does not light (SparkFun: LED Butterfly Pop Up Card).

What copper tape can and cannot do

Copper tape avoids soldering, making it a practical option for home or classroom paper projects. Its connections are less sturdy or permanent than soldered ones, however, so handle the card gently and secure the tape where the design allows. These tutorials describe simple craft circuits; they do not establish that every commercial light-up greeting card uses the same construction.
