Make the game-board look with clothes you already own, red felt backing shapes, and smaller white felt pieces. Add labels to the pieces, then finish with an optional red nose and pliers or tongs. For a couples costume, pair the board-game outfit with a doctor in scrubs.
What you need
The simplest version uses a grey long-sleeved shirt and grey sweatpants, but a neutral outfit you already own works too. Jamie Dorobek’s C.R.A.F.T. tutorial lists these supplies for its particular build:
- Grey long-sleeved shirt and grey sweatpants
- Red and white felt
- Scissors and permanent markers
- Fabric glue, a sewing machine, or safety pins
- Optional: pliers or tongs, string, and a red clown nose
Dorobek says one 12-by-18-inch sheet of white felt was enough for the eleven shapes in that project; the amount you need depends on your own design. For a doctor companion, the tutorial suggests light blue scrubs and a stethoscope. See the C.R.A.F.T. tutorial.

How to make an Operation game costume
- Plan the layout. Lay the shirt and pants flat and decide where the game pieces and labels will go. Sketch paper templates first if you want more consistent shapes.
- Cut the felt pieces. Cut the white shapes, then use each one as a guide to cut a slightly larger red shape for its backing.
- Arrange before attaching. Place the shapes across the shirt and pants and adjust the layout before fixing anything in place.
- Attach the shapes. Sew them on for a stitched finish, use fabric glue for a straightforward attachment, or pin them in place. Follow the glue label’s drying directions before wearing the costume; drying time varies by product.
- Add labels. Once the pieces are positioned, write labels on or beside them with permanent marker.
- Add optional props. A red nose and pliers or tongs can make the look more explicit. If you carry a prop, secure it safely and avoid using sharp tools.
Choose an attachment method

Make it recognizable without carrying the board
Use the contrast of white game-piece shapes on red backing, distribute them across the shirt and pants, and add labels. A red nose and pliers or tongs are optional extra cues, not requirements. The base outfit can be adapted to clothes you already own; the documented projects vary in base colors and materials rather than prescribing one exact pattern.
