To make a simple origami burger, fold the bun and fillings from separate colored paper squares, then stack the layers. The beginner activity in Onions USA’s July 2025 instructions uses roughly 6 × 6-inch squares; a separate Magic Folds tutorial uses six 15 × 15 cm sheets for its own design. Those sizes and piece counts belong to their respective projects, not to a universal origami pattern.

| Separate folded layers | Fold bun halves and fillings individually, then stack them. | A small assembled burger. Onions USA’s July 2025 activity uses roughly 6 × 6-inch squares; paper is generally enough. |
| Printable hamburger model | Follow a diagram sequence to shape a larger sheet into the hamburger form. | Joost Langeveld’s instructions describe joining four papers for a life-size version; glue or tape may help secure the tube and loose parts. |
The steps below explain the simpler layered approach. The larger printable model is a different construction, so use its own printable folding sheet and diagrams rather than applying the layered steps to it.

Gather paper and choose your colors
For the layered burger, prepare square papers for two bun halves and the fillings you want to include. Onions USA’s activity describes roughly 6 × 6-inch squares in different colors. Its introductory materials note three squares, but its layer directions use two squares for the bun plus papers for fillings, so the total depends on how many layers you make.
- Bun: light brown for two pieces.
- Patty: dark brown or orange.
- Lettuce: green.
- Cheese: yellow.
- Optional toppings: red paper for tomato slices; onion slices can be printed, colored, and cut out from the activity’s accompanying sheet.
Fold the top and bottom buns
Make one bun half from each light-brown square. The top should remain fuller, while the bottom can be pressed flatter so the finished stack sits securely.

- Place a square with its colored side down. Fold it in half in one direction, crease, and unfold. Fold it in half in the other direction, crease, and unfold.
- Fold all four corners in to meet at the center.
- Turn the paper over and fold all four corners to the center again.
- Turn it back over. Gently fold the edges inward to round the shape.
- Repeat with the second square. Shape the first piece as the fuller top bun and flatten the second a little more for the bottom bun.
Make the patty
Use a dark-brown or orange square. The folds turn it into a rounded rectangle that will sit between the bun and toppings.

- Fold a square in half and unfold it.
- Fold both edges to the middle crease to make a long strip.
- For lettuce: accordion-fold the strip to create ruffles.
- For cheese: keep the strip smooth, then fold it into a square or triangle. Cutout shapes are another option.
Add optional tomato and onion
For tomato slices, cut a red square diagonally to make two triangles, then fold each triangle in half. For onion slices, the Onions USA activity suggests printing and coloring its accompanying sheet and cutting out the shapes; children may need adult help with cutting.
Stack the burger
Place the flatter bun half underneath and layer on the patty, lettuce or cheese, and any tomato or onion pieces. Finish with the fuller bun half. Adjust the pieces by hand to keep the layers centered; the layered activity is assembled from separate folded pieces rather than joined into one continuous sheet.

What to expect from the larger printable version
Joost Langeveld’s “Origami Hamburger” is intended for a substantially larger model. Its instructions say to join four sheets to create a life-size sheet, then follow a diagram sequence involving valley folds, a squash fold, mountain folds, and edge shaping. Glue or tape may help hold the tube and attach loose parts. This is not the same pattern as the small colored-paper stack, so follow the printable sheet’s own diagrams for its exact fold placement.
How the six-sheet video design differs
Magic Folds’ October 4, 2024 tutorial specifies six sheets measuring 15 × 15 cm for its beginner-friendly burger design. That material count and size apply to that tutorial only; they should not be combined with the Onions USA activity’s roughly 6 × 6-inch squares or assumed to describe every origami burger. The tutorial description recommends watching the video through before folding along.
