For a carved R2-D2 or Death Star jack-o’-lantern, transfer a bold stencil onto a hollowed pumpkin, then cut along the pinholes. Keep R2-D2’s shapes broad and connected; for the Death Star, a sphere, dark trench and large circular dish are enough to make the design recognizable. If you want a dimensional Death Star without carving a detailed pattern, StarWars.com’s alternative uses a painted craft pumpkin, a plastic bottle and glow sticks.
Choose a carved pumpkin or a painted display
These are three different builds: a stencil-carved R2-D2, a stencil-carved Death Star, or a painted craft-pumpkin Death Star. The StarWars.com tutorial is a decorative craft, not a conventional jack-o’-lantern pattern for a fresh pumpkin.

Gather tools for stencil carving
NASA’s pumpkin-stencil instructions list a pumpkin, spoon or scraper, printed pattern, scissors, tape, a push-pin or pumpkin poker, a carving tool or small saw, and a tea light. StarWars.com’s Andor pumpkin instructions use an LED light as another option.

- Choose a pumpkin with a broad, reasonably smooth face so the paper pattern can sit against it.
- Use a high-contrast pattern with large shapes. For R2-D2, simplify the dome, eye, body panels and legs into sturdy connected areas; avoid thin slivers.
- For a carved Death Star, concentrate on the round body, equator-like trench and a large circular superlaser dish. These are practical simplifications for carving, not an official published stencil.
No R2-D2-specific official pattern is established by the cited instructions. Treat an R2-D2 outline as your own design or use an independently sourced pattern; the steps below explain how to transfer either motif.

Transfer and carve an R2-D2 or Death Star stencil
- Open and hollow the pumpkin. Cut an opening, remove the seeds and pulp, and scrape the inside smooth, especially behind the design. NASA recommends thinning the wall behind the pattern to 1 to 1½ inches.
- Print and position the design. Trim the paper, tape it to the pumpkin and press or crease it so it follows the curve. Keep the main design on the broad face.
- Pierce the outline. Use a push-pin or pumpkin poker to make holes through the paper along the lines. StarWars.com’s Andor tutorial advises spacing pinholes no more than a centimeter apart.
- Remove the paper and cut. Follow the pinholes with a small saw or carving tool. NASA advises sawing perpendicular to the pumpkin surface, starting at the center of the pattern and moving outward. Avoid pressing too hard, support partly cut pieces and gently push out finished pieces.
- Add a light and replace the lid. Use a tea light or a battery-powered LED light.
Make the painted Death Star craft-pumpkin display
StarWars.com’s tutorial, published October 23, 2018, by Kelly Knox, describes a stone-textured craft pumpkin with a painted trench, lights and an optional glow-stick laser. The page says the activity should be done only with adult supervision.
Materials
- Large craft pumpkin and pumpkin-carving knife
- Light-gray stone-texture spray paint
- Empty plastic bottle
- White, black and glow-in-the-dark acrylic paint
- Five thin green glow sticks
- Paintbrush and chalk
- Hot-glue gun
Assembly
- Spray the craft pumpkin with stone-texture paint and let it dry.
- Use the bottle end as a guide to mark a circle slightly above the pumpkin’s middle, then draw a slightly smaller circle inside it.
- Cut the smaller opening so the bottle fits snugly. Insert the bottle end and glue it in place, then paint it to match the pumpkin.
- Paint a black equator or trench around the sphere. Dot white lights around the surface and add glow-in-the-dark paint over them.
- Attach the glow sticks around the bottle dish to create the laser effect. The tutorial says they can be poked in rather than glued and should be removable for replacement.
This bottle-and-glow-stick construction is optional; it is not needed for an ordinary carved Death Star pumpkin.

Work safely
- Have an adult supervise knife work and any hot-glue steps. StarWars.com explicitly calls for adult supervision for its Death Star activity.
- Use controlled cuts and light pressure; NASA warns that too much pressure can break the pumpkin.
- For an illuminated carved pumpkin, a battery-powered light is an available alternative to a tea light; StarWars.com’s Andor instructions use an LED.
