Make a small decorative corn cob by twisting four 12-inch chenille pipe cleaners into a star, threading approximately 120 plastic pony beads onto the arms, gathering the beaded arms into a cob, and fanning the remaining wire ends as husks. The result needs no glue in this basic version, so it works well as a table decoration, place-card accent, or classroom project when adults manage the small beads.

The finished piece is a compact, three-dimensional cob rather than a flat strand of beads. Four pipe cleaners form eight working ends after they are crossed and opened into a star. You bead those arms first, then pull them together so the rows curve around one another. The un-beaded ends remain above the cob and can be twisted and spread to suggest husks.

For this article, use one complete pattern from start to finish: four 12-inch pipe cleaners and about 120 plastic pony beads. That combination is the supply count documented by the Texas Historical Commission. Do not combine it with the different three-stem, 60-bead pattern described by Gallup Arts; the proportions and branch layout are different.
“Indian corn” is a familiar name for the colorful autumn corn used in seasonal decoration. The craft itself is presented in the cited instructional sources as a modern beaded project. It should not be described as a traditional art form shared by every Native nation.
Materials for the four-stem pattern
- Four 12-inch pipe cleaners: Chenille stems in brown, tan, gold, green, or a mix will work. Brown makes the husk ends easy to see, while bright colors can show through as a decorative cob.
- Approximately 120 plastic pony beads: Use one color, alternating colors, or an assortment that suggests multicolored ornamental corn. Pony beads have a large enough opening for most craft pipe cleaners.
Keep the beads in a shallow tray or several small cups so they do not roll away. The basic construction does not require scissors or glue because the stems are used at their full length. If a classroom version later adds hot glue, follow the separate variation below rather than changing this supply list midway through the project.

How to make beaded Indian corn
1. Check the stems and count the beads
Lay the four 12-inch pipe cleaners side by side and straighten any sharp bends. Count out roughly 120 beads. An even starting point is about 30 beads for each of four original stems, but the exact number on each arm can vary slightly because pony beads and hand tension are not perfectly uniform. Reserve a few beads until the end so you can fill a visibly shorter arm without forcing the last bead.
2. Twist the four pipe cleaners into one center
Hold the stems together at their midpoint. Twist the bundle several turns so the center locks as one compact hub. Leave the ends extending in both directions. The hub is the structural core; if it is loose, the finished cob will separate when you pull the arms together.

3. Open the bundle into a star
Spread the eight free ends evenly around the center, making a starburst. At this stage, each original pipe cleaner appears as a long line through the hub, with one end pointing in each direction. Aim for broad, even spacing rather than a perfect geometric star. The arms need enough room for beads to slide without catching on a neighboring stem.
4. Thread beads onto every arm
Slide pony beads onto one arm at a time. Push each bead down toward the central twist, leaving the uppermost section of the stem empty. Continue around the star until all eight ends carry beads. Because the four-stem pattern uses about 120 beads, the arms together should look densely covered while still leaving a short un-beaded tip on each end.

Do not bend the arms into a cob while you are beading them. Keeping the star flat makes it easier to see gaps, redistribute colors, and compare the length of one arm with the next. If a bead will not pass a rough spot, rotate the pipe cleaner gently instead of forcing it; excessive pressure can flatten the stem and make later beads harder to thread.
5. Gather the beaded arms into a cob
Once every arm is beaded, lift the ends toward one another around the center. The beaded sections will begin to form a rounded bundle. Work slowly around the piece, nudging one arm at a time so the beads sit beside, rather than directly on top of, the neighboring row.
When the bundle resembles a short corn cob, pinch the un-beaded portions together above the beads. Twist those upper sections as a group for several turns. This second twist closes the cob and prevents the beaded rows from sliding back into a flat star.

6. Shape the remaining ends as husks
Separate the loose stem ends above the twist. Fan them outward and curve them slightly down along the sides of the beaded bundle. You can leave individual tips visible for a spiky husk effect or twist two neighboring ends together before spreading them. Avoid tight kinks at the base; gentle curves are easier to adjust and less likely to expose a gap in the cob.
7. Balance the finished form
Set the corn on a table and rotate it. If one side looks thin, push its beads toward the center and pull an adjacent arm outward. If the cob is too long and narrow, loosen the upper twist by a fraction of a turn and fan the arms wider. If it is too wide, gather the husk ends closer and make a slightly tighter upper twist. Finish by tucking any sharp wire tip into a neighboring twist.
Color and shaping choices
Use a controlled color pattern
An assortment of yellow, orange, red, purple, white, and brown beads gives a harvest-corn appearance. For stripes, repeat a short sequence such as two yellow beads, two orange beads, and one red bead on each arm. Start the same sequence at the central hub so the colors align as the arms curve together.
Create a darker cob with a light husk
Thread dark red, burgundy, purple, and brown beads on the arms, then use green or tan pipe cleaners for the exposed ends. The contrast makes the husk silhouette clearer. Since all four stems are twisted together, the stem color will also appear in small gaps between bead rows.
Make a miniature or fuller-looking cob
For a shorter cob, stop each arm a few beads earlier and gather the stems closer to the center. For a fuller surface, use the full approximate allotment and keep the beads packed together. Do not add a second pattern’s bead count to this one; changing the count changes how much bare stem remains for the husks.

Documented patterns compared
Published instructions use more than one proportion. The table helps you choose a design before opening the bead containers.
| Pattern | Stem setup | Bead quantity | Distinctive construction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four-stem cob (Texas Historical Commission, Caddo Mounds) | Four 12-inch pipe cleaners | Approximately 120 plastic pony beads | Twist the stems, spread them into a star, bead the arms, then gather the assembly into a cob and shape the loose ends. |
| Gallup Arts branch pattern | Three brown pipe cleaners | 60 beads | Open the stems into six branches, add beads, gather the branches, twist above the beads, and arrange the remaining ends as husks. |
| Napkin-ring variation | Four 12-inch pipe cleaners | About 100–150 large-hole glass beads; plastic is an alternative | Build the beaded corn, then mount it on a cardboard tube with ribbon; scissors and hot glue are part of this embellished version. |
The first row is the complete how-to in this article. The Gallup Arts version is useful when you want fewer beads and six clearly defined branches, but its three-stem count should stay together. The napkin-ring project is a separate display object, not a required finishing step for the basic cob.

Children who can safely handle small craft beads can participate by sorting colors, counting beads, and threading the arms. An adult should supervise throughout because pony beads are small enough to present a choking hazard. Keep loose beads off the floor and away from toddlers and children who still mouth objects. Younger children can help choose a color order or shape the finished husks while an adult performs the central twists.
The pipe-cleaner wire can poke if a cut or frayed end points outward. Check each tip after shaping and tuck it into a twist. If you make the napkin-ring variation, hot glue and a glue gun require adult handling and a heat-safe work surface. That variation is therefore not automatically mess-free or suitable for every age, even though the basic four-stem cob uses no adhesive.
Optional: turn the cob into a napkin ring
For a place setting, follow the separate napkin-ring supply list: four 12-inch pipe cleaners, about 100–150 large-hole glass beads (plastic may be substituted), a cardboard tube, ribbon, scissors, and hot glue. Form the beaded corn first, keeping its stem and bead quantities internally consistent with that variation.

- Cut a short ring from the cardboard tube with scissors. Choose a width that can slide over a rolled napkin.
- Wrap or tie ribbon around the tube and secure it with hot glue.
- Position the beaded corn on the tube so the husk ends face upward and the cob sits across the ring.
- Apply hot glue only where the stems or base touch the tube, then hold the piece in place until the adhesive sets.
- Let the glue cool completely before putting the ring near fabric or allowing children to handle it.
Because this version adds glass beads, cardboard, ribbon, and adhesive, it has different handling and weight considerations from the simple pony-bead decoration.
Using the project in an educational setting
A National Education Association-hosted Native American Heritage Month booklet places a beaded-corn activity within lessons about Indigenous agriculture, foods made from corn, and uses of corn husks. That context can make the craft more meaningful than treating it as a generic autumn object. You might pair the activity with a discussion of how corn is grown, prepared, stored, and used in different communities.
The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma also publishes a beaded-corn craft video. These resources can support further learning, but one project should not be presented as a craft that represents all Native nations. Name the specific source or community when discussing a lesson, distinguish a contemporary classroom activity from traditional art, and invite students to learn about the many Indigenous agricultural traditions connected with corn.
Keep the making instructions separate from cultural claims. The bead-and-pipe-cleaner construction described here is a practical seasonal craft; the educational resources provide background for respectful conversation rather than proof that every community makes corn in this form.
Display and storage
Place one cob in a small bowl, line several along a mantel, or use the pieces as decorations around a harvest centerpiece. Keep the beaded corn dry and away from direct heat, which can soften plastic beads or deform pipe-cleaner fibers. Store each cob in a shallow box or wrap it loosely in tissue so the husk ends do not flatten against heavy objects.
If a bead comes loose, slide it back onto the exposed stem and retwist the nearby section. A separated arm usually needs only a few turns at the central hub; disassemble the whole cob only if the center twist has opened. With the four-stem pattern, the most reliable repairs preserve the original arm layout rather than adding random stems or beads.
