You can make a candle decorated with garden flowers, but the flower-decorated version should be a display piece—not a candle to light. Dried botanicals can ignite near a flame. For a candle you plan to burn, make a separate, flower-free candle and keep its wax pool clear.
Can you put dried flowers in candles?
Dried flowers and other botanicals are combustible. The National Candle Association (NCA) advises against candles with flammable botanicals embedded near the flame. In its summary of testing on three reviewed commercial samples, two experienced secondary ignition; the most severe event ignited the entire wax surface within an hour of first lighting. Those findings describe a small set of samples, not every botanical candle, but they make the practical risk clear: do not light a candle decorated with flowers.
Pressing flowers, putting them near the candle’s side, or using a candle-making kit does not establish that a flower-decorated candle is safe to burn. The NCA does not validate an exterior-flower attachment method for a candle that will later be lit.

Choose the project: display candle or burnable candle

How to make a garden-flower candle for display
Use this as a visual craft project only. The available safety guidance does not establish a tested adhesive, flower placement, curing process, or recipe for a floral candle, so do not treat any decorative method as proof that the candle can be burned.
- Set the use before you decorate. Decide that the finished candle will remain unlit. Do not make it for occasional burning or assume that flowers placed away from the wick make lighting safe.
- Arrange the flowers as a display. Position pressed or dried garden flowers around the candle for appearance. Alternatively, arrange them separately around an unlit candle, keeping the botanicals well away whenever a candle is lit.
- Mark it clearly. Add a tag or label reading “display only—do not burn,” and make the same warning clear if you package or give the candle away.
- Keep it away from open flames. Store and display the floral candle where it will not be mistaken for a burnable candle or placed beside a lit one.
How to make a separate flower-free candle to burn
For a candle you intend to light, use a candle-making kit or appropriate candle wax, wick, and candle-safe vessel or mold. Treat these as component categories, not a guarantee that any combination will burn safely: candle size, shape, wick, wax, fragrance, and dye can all affect burning behavior, according to the NCA.

- Choose compatible components. Follow the kit or component maker’s instructions for the specific wax, wick, and vessel or mold you have. Do not assume a wick or vessel is suitable just because it is sold for candle making.
- Make the candle without botanicals. Keep flowers and other combustible decorations out of the candle and away from the wax pool. Follow the instructions for the materials you selected; an untested recipe cannot guarantee a particular burn.
- Follow the candle’s care directions when lighting it. Apply the safety steps below, and use the manufacturer’s guidance for burn time and care.

- Trim the wick to 1/4 inch.
- Remove wick trimmings and other debris from the wax pool.
- Use a holder made for candle use.
- Keep the candle away from drafts and combustible materials, and never leave it unattended.
- Follow the manufacturer’s directions for burn time and care.
A calm, steady flame is a sign of balanced burning, according to the NCA. Airflow can cause flickering or visible smoke, while an overly long wick or debris in the wax pool can contribute to flare-ups. These signs are useful to notice, but they do not diagnose every candle problem.
