How to Make Beautiful DIY Paper Christmas Ornaments in About Five Minutes

Create a six-petal paper Christmas bauble with cardstock, a printer, scissors, glue and string. The hand assembly takes about five minutes after printing and preparation; separate folded-strip and honeycomb methods are also explained.

You can make an attractive spherical paper bauble from six printed petals, cardstock, glue and a hanging loop. The handwork can take about five minutes once your pattern is printed and your supplies are ready; printing, cutting, setup and first-time practice add time. The method below keeps the six-petal project distinct from folded-strip and honeycomb ornaments, which use different pieces and construction.

What you are making

This ornament is a lightweight sphere assembled from six matching paper petals. Each petal is cut from a printed design, gently curled, and joined to another petal to make three pairs. The pairs are then glued together into a bauble, and a knotted string loop is attached at the top. Hang it on a Christmas tree or branch, or place it on a shelf or table centerpiece.

The printable designs for this specific six-petal project are provided through A Piece of Rainbow’s subscribers library. Use that stated access route rather than assuming the pattern is sold or hosted elsewhere: see the six-petal tutorial and pattern-access information.

Materials for the six-petal bauble

  • Cardstock, preferably sturdy enough to hold a curved shape but still easy to cut with scissors
  • A printer and the six-petal printable design
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue; hot glue can also be used where you need a quick, firm bond
  • Metallic string, hemp twine or thin ribbon for the hanger
  • One small wood bead, optional, for a finished look at the top
  • A small cylindrical object, such as a pen barrel, for curling each petal

Cardstock is the practical default because it cuts cleanly by hand and has enough body to support the bauble. A cutting machine is not required for this hand-cut design. If you use a different paper, keep all six pieces the same size and test one curl before cutting the full set.

How to make the printed six-petal ornament

  1. Prepare the pattern. Open the printable design through the source’s subscribers-library route and print it at the intended size on cardstock. Check that your printer has not scaled the page unexpectedly; six petals must match for the sphere to close evenly.
  2. Cut all six petals. Follow the printed outlines with sharp scissors. Keep the edges smooth and avoid trimming one petal noticeably smaller than the others. Consistent pieces make the finished ornament more symmetrical.
  3. Curl the petals. Wrap each paper petal lightly around a small cylindrical object. The goal is a gentle curve, not a tight tube or a hard crease. Curl all six in the same direction and to roughly the same degree.
  4. Make three pairs. Apply glue along the joining area specified by the design and attach the petals in pairs. Press each pair until the adhesive grips. You should now have three matching two-petal sections.
  5. Build the sphere. Glue the three paired sections together so their curved surfaces meet and the six petals distribute around the center. Work around the ornament rather than forcing one seam closed first; this helps keep the shape round. Hold each seam long enough for the glue to catch.
  6. Prepare the hanger. Cut a length of string or thin ribbon and tie a knot in one end. If you are using the optional bead, thread it onto the string before attaching the loop.
  7. Attach the loop. Glue the knotted end, with the bead if desired, to the top of the bauble. Let the adhesive set before hanging so the loop does not pull away from the paper.

The original tutorial lists craft glue and hot glue as options. Craft glue gives you more adjustment time; hot glue sets faster but can create a visible bump or a hot-glue strand, so use only a small amount at the top and seams.

Making the five-minute claim realistic

“Five minutes” is an approximate tutorial-making claim, not a guaranteed completion time or an independently measured statistic. The estimate makes most sense after the pattern is available, the printer is ready and you have made one ornament. Your first attempt may take longer while you learn how much to curl the petals and how long your glue needs to grab.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Add printing time: loading cardstock, checking scale and waiting for ink are outside the hand-assembly estimate.
  • Add cutting time: six detailed outlines can take longer than six simple circles, especially with thick stock.
  • Add glue-setting time: craft glue may need extra holding or drying before the loop can support the ornament.
  • Add setup and cleanup: gathering a printer, scissors, adhesive, string and a curling tool is part of a real project session.

For a batch, print and cut all the petals first, then curl and pair them assembly-line style. That reduces repeated tool changes, but it does not turn the estimate into a promise.

Paper and decoration choices

Paper changes both the appearance and the handling of a paper ornament. The design needs material that can curve without collapsing and can hold a glued seam.

Paper choice Practical effect Best use
Cardstock Stiff, easy to cut by hand and strong enough to hold the spherical form Most reliable choice for the six-petal bauble
Scrapbook paper Offers printed color or pattern; stiffness varies by sheet Use when the sheet can support a gentle curl
Wrapping paper or clean used gift-bag paper Light and decorative, but may need a sturdier design or backing Design-dependent experiments, not a guaranteed substitute
Tissue paper, book pages or rice paper Creates a softer, more delicate look and can tear at glued seams Better suited to designs made for lighter paper, with careful handling

These substitutions are supported across several paper-ornament tutorials, but no paper behaves identically. If a thin sheet buckles, use a heavier stock, reinforce the printed sheet, or choose a construction designed for lightweight paper. Metallic string, hemp twine and thin ribbon all work as hanger materials; a small wood bead is purely an optional finishing detail.

Alternative project: folded paper-strip ornament

A folded-strip ornament is a separate five-minute-style project, not another way to assemble the six-petal bauble. DIY Joy author Lily Suing describes making one from eight folded strips and a ribbon loop. The page was published October 10, 2026, and calls the making time “about five minutes”; cutting, folding, glue handling, setup and learning the folds can add time. Read the original instructions at DIY Joy’s folded paper-strip tutorial.

Materials

  • Two sheets of colored paper
  • Glue stick
  • Ribbon for the hanging loop
  • Scissors or, optionally, a paper cutter for straighter repeated cuts

Strip method

  1. Fold one sheet lengthwise twice and cut along the creases to make four strips.
  2. Repeat with the second sheet, giving you eight strips total.
  3. Fold alternating corners of every strip into triangular sections.
  4. Join the folded strips, alternating colors if you want a two-color pattern.
  5. Assemble the folded sections around a knotted ribbon loop and shape the ornament.

Even strips and matching corner folds determine whether the finished form hangs straight. As Suing puts it: “Cut even strips and fold each corner the same way to keep your ornament balanced.” Metallic paper, old gift bags and contrasting paper colors can change the look. The finished pieces can decorate a tree, become part of a garland, dress up a room or serve as a gift topper.

Slower alternative: honeycomb ornaments

Honeycomb ornaments use many folded pieces and several glue lines, so they should not be presented as a five-minute finished project. First Day of Home’s tutorial, updated September 4, 2026, offers a free round pattern and a paid bundle containing five shapes in PDF and SVG formats: view the honeycomb instructions and pattern options.

How the honeycomb construction differs

  • Most shapes use 16 cut pieces; a heart or finial uses 22.
  • Each piece is folded and receives several lines of glue.
  • The glued stack needs two drying periods of about 15 minutes each.
  • Paper clips or clothespins can hold the layers while the adhesive dries.
  • Waiting for full drying helps reduce tearing when the ornament is opened.

School glue, paper and string can be enough. Velvet ribbon and wooden beads are optional embellishments. The tutorial lists double-sided scrapbook paper, tissue paper, colored cardstock, wrapping paper, book pages and rice paper, but the heavier or lighter choices will fold and tear differently.

Choosing tools for repeated ornaments

Scissors or paper cutter?

Scissors are sufficient for the six-petal pattern and for a one-off folded-strip ornament. A paper cutter can make eight strips faster and more uniform, which matters when balance depends on identical widths. Whichever tool you use, measure or align the first cut and repeat it rather than trimming freehand variations into every piece.

Printed template or cutting machine?

The six-petal project needs only a printer and scissors. Other patterns may offer machine-cut files. Especially Paper’s commercial collection includes five SVG/DXF ornament designs and PDF instructions; its listing recommends 65–80 lb cardstock for blade-cut pieces that slot together and states that the files are for personal use only, may not be shared and may not be used for items that are sold. Check the current listing and license before using those files: see the collection’s formats, material guidance and license terms.

A cutting machine can save time on repeated shapes, but it is an option for a compatible pattern, not a requirement for the hand-cut bauble described here.

Fixing common problems

The sphere looks lopsided

Check whether one petal was cut smaller, curled more tightly or glued at a different angle. Gently adjust an un-set seam, then align the remaining petals before the adhesive cures. For folded strips, uneven widths or inconsistent triangular folds are the usual cause; recut a matching set rather than trying to compensate with one oversized fold.

The paper keeps springing open

Use a little more pressure while the glue grabs, and let each seam set before adding the next. Cardstock normally holds a curl better than very thin paper. Hot glue can provide a rapid bond, while craft glue allows repositioning but may need longer support.

The hanger pulls off

Make a firm knot, attach it to the top center and use enough adhesive to cover the knot without soaking the paper. A bead can add a neat transition, but it does not replace a secure knot or a fully set glue joint.

The honeycomb layers tear

Do not open the ornament while the glue is soft. Use clips or clothespins during both approximately 15-minute drying periods and wait until the adhesive is fully dry before shaping.

Safe, attractive finishing ideas

Let the paper’s pattern do most of the decorating: metallic stock, alternating colors, printed scrapbook sheets or clean gift-bag paper can create contrast without adding weight. Keep embellishments light so the petals do not sag. A bead at the top, a narrow ribbon instead of string, or a metallic hanger changes the finish while preserving the six-petal construction.

Before hanging a batch, test one ornament on the intended branch. If the loop twists, reposition the knot or use a shorter, balanced length of ribbon. Store finished paper ornaments flat or in a box with light padding between pieces so the petals are not crushed between seasons.
