The bedroom-and-foyer update is primarily a preparation milestone: the painted stripes were being covered so the suite could become a clean surface for trim and wallpaper. In a related September 10, 2025 report, Kristi Linauer wrote that she had primed every wall at least once, most walls twice, and was glad to have the stripes gone. The exact post named “Bedroom And Foyer Progress — The Stripes Are Almost Gone” remains an archive listing rather than a retrievable full article, so its title should not be treated as proof of a particular primer, completed trim design, or finished wall covering.

For anyone facing similar gray-and-white or otherwise high-contrast stripes, the dependable sequence is inspection, cleaning, smoothing, stain- or adhesion-appropriate primer, inspection again, and only then the finish surface. That order matters when the next stages include wainscoting, painted trim, or wallpaper.

What the bedroom and foyer progress actually establishes

The title appears in the Master Bedroom Suite archive, page 3 of 5. The archive confirms that it is a bedroom-suite renovation update, but the full text could not be retrieved. The usable project detail comes from a related post dated September 10, 2025, “Bedroom & Foyer Progress (Plus, Trying To Map Out My Wainscoting Plan)”.

That related report says the walls had all been primed at least once and that most received a second coat. Linauer described the stripes disappearing beneath the primer and the walls becoming a clean slate for trim and wallpaper. Her exact statement was: “And I’m so glad to finally have those stripes gone!” This is a statement about the related September update, not a recovered passage from the exact archive item.

Earlier planning explains why the change was desirable. In a February 5, 2025 post about rethinking the gray-and-white striped foyer, Linauer wrote that the stripes no longer suited the surrounding design direction. Several other colors and patterns would be visible nearby, so she considered a solid wall treatment instead of adding another competing pattern.

The available record does not identify the primer brand, confirm a precise number of coats on every wall, document completed trim, or establish the final wallpaper or paint color. Those details should not be inferred from the title.

Why painted stripes can show through a new finish

Color contrast is only one problem. A stripe may have a different sheen from the surrounding paint, and repeated rolling can leave a slight edge or buildup where colors meet. Wallpaper and smooth trim reveal those defects more readily than a forgiving flat wall color.

Primer can unify color and surface absorption, but it cannot reliably disguise a physical ridge. If you can feel an edge with your fingertips, plan to level it before relying on primer. Likewise, glossy or contaminated paint can cause poor adhesion even when the wall looks clean.

Inspect the walls before buying materials

Map the stripe boundaries

Use raking light from a window or work light held at a low angle. Mark raised edges, peeling spots, nail holes, dents, and areas where the old paint looks shiny. A visual map prevents you from discovering a ridge after wallpaper or trim has already been installed.

Check the existing coating

Wipe a small area with a damp cloth and mild household cleaner, then let it dry. If the cloth picks up chalky residue, the surface needs more cleaning and possibly a compatible sealer. Press painter’s tape firmly onto an inconspicuous area and remove it. Flaking or lifted paint indicates that loose material must be removed and repaired rather than sealed in place.

Decide whether the wall is flat enough

Run a broad putty knife across each color transition. A knife that rocks over a ridge is a signal to skim or sand. Do not aggressively sand an unknown older coating until you have considered dust control and the possibility of lead-containing paint in an older home; follow local safety requirements and use appropriate testing when applicable.

What you find Preparation response Reason
Only a color change, with no detectable edge Clean, dull any sheen, then apply a suitable bonding or stain-blocking primer. Color can be hidden without removing sound paint, but adhesion and uniform absorption still matter.
A raised stripe edge or roller buildup Sand or skim the transition, remove dust, and spot-prime repairs before full-wall priming. Primer changes color; it does not level a ridge.
Peeling, cracking, or loose paint Scrape to a sound edge, feather the perimeter, patch as needed, and prime the repair. Coating over unstable paint transfers the failure to the new finish.
Glossy, greasy, or dusty surface Clean thoroughly, allow it to dry, and use a primer whose label permits the existing surface. Contamination and sheen reduce adhesion.

Step-by-step method for covering painted stripes

  1. Protect the room. Remove switch plates and movable furnishings. Cover floors and fixed items, and protect adjoining walls if only one section is being treated. Ventilate according to the coating labels.
  2. Clean before sanding. Dust and wash the walls with a mild cleaner appropriate for painted surfaces. Rinse where the cleaner requires it and let the wall dry completely. Sanding a greasy wall spreads contamination instead of removing it.
  3. Remove loose material. Scrape blistered or flaking paint with a sharp scraper. Feather the remaining edge with fine abrasive paper so the transition is gradual rather than a hard step.
  4. Level visible ridges. Apply a compatible patching or skim-coat compound to stripe edges, dents, and fastener holes. Let it dry, sand it smooth, and remove all sanding dust. Several thin applications are easier to control than one thick application.
  5. Dull unwanted sheen. Lightly abrade glossy areas without cutting unnecessarily into sound paint. Vacuum or wipe away residue using a method that leaves no film.
  6. Prime repaired areas. Spot-prime exposed compound, bare substrate, and scraped edges. This keeps repairs from absorbing finish at a different rate.
  7. Prime the wall systematically. Work in manageable sections, maintain a wet edge, and spread the product at the coverage rate on its label. Back-roll consistently so the texture remains uniform. The exact primer used in the documented project is not known.
  8. Allow the labeled drying and recoat time. A surface that feels dry may not be ready for another coat, wallpaper adhesive, or trim installation. Temperature, humidity, ventilation, and film thickness affect the schedule.
  9. Inspect under the intended lighting. Look again with low-angle light after the primer dries. Mark any remaining ridge, pinhole, or flashing, repair it, and spot-prime the repair.
  10. Apply additional primer only when the surface calls for it. A second full coat may be useful for persistent contrast or uneven absorption, but follow the product label rather than assuming every wall requires the same number. The related bedroom-and-foyer report says most of its walls received a second coat; it does not establish a universal rule.
  11. Choose the finish only after the surface passes inspection. Paint, wallpaper, and trim each expose different defects. Confirm that the primer is compatible with the planned finish and that the wall is smooth enough for it.

Choosing a primer for a striped wall

There is no verified product name for the project described in the update, so select by condition rather than by trying to recreate an unknown purchase. Read the current technical data and label for surface compatibility, required cleaning, sanding, ventilation, dry time, and recoat instructions.

Surface condition Primer decision Questions to answer from the label
Sound, previously painted wall with a noticeable color shift Use an interior primer intended to promote uniform coverage and adhesion. Does it bond to the existing sheen, and is it suitable beneath the chosen finish?
Exposed compound or bare patches Use a primer that seals porous repairs, usually after spot-priming. Will it prevent uneven absorption or flashing?
Water marks, smoke residue, or unknown staining Choose a stain-blocking product rated for the specific contaminant. Does the label require extra coats, special ventilation, or a particular topcoat?
Very glossy or difficult-to-bond coating Clean and abrade first, then use a bonding primer approved for that substrate. What preparation does the manufacturer require, and what finishes are compatible?

Color matching the primer is optional unless the finish system or manufacturer recommends it. The practical goal is a stable, evenly absorbing surface; the primer is not a substitute for leveling the stripe edges.

Coordinating primer work with trim and wallpaper

Set the wall plane before installing wainscoting

Trim can hide some lower-wall imperfections, but it can also frame and emphasize unevenness. Finish major patching and priming first. Establish the intended chair-rail, panel, or baseboard heights only after checking door casings, outlets, switches, vents, and transitions into adjoining rooms.

Use a clean surface for wallpaper planning

Wallpaper needs a sound, smooth, suitably primed substrate. Seams telegraph bumps, and paste or peel-and-stick products can behave unpredictably over dusty compound or incompatible paint. Follow the wallpaper manufacturer’s primer requirements; some systems specify a product that improves repositioning or future removal.

Sequence the work to protect finished surfaces

Complete dusty repairs before final priming. Install or prepare major trim only when its layout is settled, then caulk and prime trim as appropriate. If wallpaper is planned, decide whether it stops at the trim, runs behind a removable component, or is installed before selected moldings. Masking and cutting decisions are easier when the final boundaries are known.

Common failure modes and their fixes

The stripes are still visible after priming

First determine whether the remaining difference is color or shape. If it is color, verify coverage, absorption, and the primer’s suitability; a further labeled coat may be appropriate. If it is a shadow along the boundary, return to smoothing and spot-priming rather than simply adding paint.

The new coat crawls or separates

That usually points to contamination, excessive sheen, or incompatibility. Stop, allow the area to dry, clean it, dull the surface as directed, and use a compatible bonding system. Do not bury the defect under repeated finish coats.

Patched areas flash through the finish

Flashing occurs when porous repairs absorb differently from surrounding paint. Seal the compound uniformly, let it dry, and inspect under the same lighting in which the wall will be viewed. Uneven rolling can also create a visible texture change.

Wallpaper exposes every defect

Remove or level ridges, fill pinholes, and remove sanding dust before hanging. Use a work light at a low angle and inspect across the entire wall, not just at eye level. A surface that looks acceptable under diffuse light may fail under grazing light.

Edges telegraph through newly installed trim

Trim should not be used to conceal a wall ridge that prevents tight contact. Correct the wall, dry-fit the molding, and check the joint before final caulking and painting.

A practical completion checklist

  • Every stripe boundary has been checked for a physical ridge, not just a color difference.
  • Loose, glossy, dusty, or contaminated areas have been corrected.
  • Repairs are smooth under both hand inspection and low-angle light.
  • Primer and finish materials are compatible with the existing coating and the planned wallpaper or paint.
  • The wall has been allowed to dry for the time stated on the product label.
  • Trim heights, outlet clearances, casing relationships, and wallpaper stopping points are resolved before final installation.
  • No claim about the original project’s primer brand, exact coat schedule, or completed finish is being made without a source that names it.

What readers should take from the update

The meaningful progress is the conversion of a high-contrast, design-conflicting wall into a prepared surface. The September 10, 2025 related coverage documents the author’s use of primer and says that most walls received a second coat, while the February planning post explains the move away from the striped foyer because nearby colors and patterns made a solid treatment more workable. For another bedroom or foyer, the transferable lesson is not a particular product or coat count: it is to remove instability, level what can be felt, prime for the actual substrate, inspect again, and only then commit to trim or wallpaper.
