Turn an unwanted book page into framed botanical art by pressing flowers or leaves until completely dry, arranging them on the page, and securing the composition with either a thin layer of glue or the frame itself. The most important controls are moisture, spacing and light: damp plant material can mold, crowded specimens dry poorly, and strong light fades color.
What this project makes—and what it does not
This is a small, framed composition that combines printed text or an illustration with flattened plant material. The page supplies a warm, textural background; the plants provide the shapes and color. Because the materials are organic, the result is decorative rather than a guaranteed archival object. Mississippi State University Extension Service says a pressed floral design has the potential to remain beautiful for decades or longer, while also advising protection from direct and strong light. No authoritative comparison establishes that a particular glue, sealant or frame will preserve every specimen for a fixed period.

Use only a page from an unwanted, damaged or secondhand book. Removing a page from a sound, usable or valuable book defeats the reclaimed-material purpose and can destroy something another reader could use.
Materials and choices
Core supplies
- An unwanted or damaged book page, or a page from a secondhand book
- Pressed flowers, leaves or grasses
- A heavy book with non-glazed pages, or a dedicated flower press
- Absorbent paper such as paper towels or plain paper, plus cardboard if you are making a layered press
- Small paintbrush and a suitable craft glue, such as matte craft glue or Mod Podge
- Card stock for support, if your page is thin
- Tweezers, scissors and a clean, flat work surface
- A picture frame sized to the page
A dedicated flower press is a useful optional purchase if you expect to repeat the craft. A heavy book with non-glazed pages is the lower-cost alternative identified by Mississippi State University Extension. Dunes Center’s DIY press instructions also use newspaper or paper towels, cardboard and weight such as heavy books or wood.
Choose a page that helps the composition
Typography and small illustrations work well when they leave enough open area for the plants. Look for a page whose ink, margins and line density complement rather than hide the specimens. Place the page beside the intended frame before you begin. Trim only after you know which edges must fit; cutting first can remove a useful margin or part of an illustration.

Choose clean, undamaged flowers, leaves or grasses. Thin, relatively flat pieces are easier to dry evenly. Bulky centers and thick stems hold moisture longer, so you may need to divide a compound leaf or shorten a stem to make the piece fit the design. These are practical options, not requirements: retain a stem or a fuller form when it is important to your intended silhouette.

Press flowers and leaves safely
Set up a heavy-book press
- Open a heavy book with non-glazed pages. Glossy magazine paper slows moisture loss and is a poor choice for this step.
- Place an absorbent sheet on the page where the specimen will lie. Add cardboard beneath or above the paper if you want extra separation and stiffness.
- Lay each flower, leaf or grass flat, with pieces separated so they do not touch or overlap. Crowding traps moisture and makes even drying harder.
- Cover the specimens with another absorbent sheet and close the book gently. Add more weight on top if the book does not provide firm, even pressure.
- When your setup uses replaceable absorbent layers, inspect them and replace any damp sheets. Keep the press closed between checks.
Mississippi State University Extension specifically identifies a heavy book with non-glazed pages or a flower press as effective methods. Its warning is practical: moisture trapped around flowers and leaves can lead to mold. Never move a specimen to the art page while it still feels cool, flexible or damp.
Or use a dedicated flower press
Follow the press maker’s layering order, but keep the same principles: absorbent material on both sides, separate specimens and firm, even pressure. A purpose-made press is convenient for repeated projects; it does not remove the need to verify that every piece is fully dry.
Plan for variable drying time
Published instructions give different schedules because plant thickness, humidity, absorbency and pressure vary. Use the figures as planning ranges, not promises:
| Instruction source | Drying guidance | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Mississippi State University Extension Service, Creating a Pressed Floral Design (2020) | About four weeks for complete drying | Use the longer period as a conservative expectation, especially for thicker material. |
| Goodwill NCW, DIY Pressed Flower Art with Thrifted Finds (accessed 2026) | About one to two weeks | A shorter instruction that may suit thin specimens and favorable conditions. |
| Dunes Center, DIY Plant Press (accessed 2026) | At least one week | A minimum, not a guarantee that every plant is ready then. |
Check the material rather than relying on the calendar. A ready specimen is flat and dry throughout, without soft, cool or bendable areas. If in doubt, leave it pressed longer. A rushed transfer can seal moisture against the book page and create mold or staining.

Prepare the page and test the layout
Measure before trimming
Set the dry page in the frame or against its backing to confirm the visible area. Mark any trim line on the back and cut with scissors or a sharp craft blade on a protected surface. If the frame has a mat, account for the portion that will be hidden under it.
Build the composition without adhesive
- Lay the page flat and place the largest or most visually important specimen first.
- Add leaves, grasses and smaller flowers to create a clear direction or balance.
- Move pieces until the text and plant forms can both be read. A little negative space often keeps the design from looking crowded.
- Use tweezers to lift delicate petals and small leaves rather than pinching them with fingers.
- Photograph or sketch the arrangement once it works. This gives you a reference while you attach each part.
Do all arranging before applying glue. Once adhesive touches paper, sliding a specimen can wrinkle the page or tear a fragile petal.
Attach the botanicals
Option 1: Glue a permanent layout
- Work on a clean, dry surface and keep the pressed pieces in the order of your layout.
- Use a small paintbrush to spread a thin, light layer of glue on the back of one specimen or on the area of page beneath it.
- Transfer the piece with tweezers, place it gently and press only enough to make contact.
- Continue one piece at a time, checking that stems and edges lie flat.
- Leave the complete design undisturbed until the glue is dry, then frame it.
Too much glue can wrinkle paper and may show through delicate material. A thin coat gives you control and limits wetting of the page. Neither the cited instructions nor comparative testing establishes that ordinary craft glue is archival, so treat the adhesive as a practical mounting choice rather than a longevity guarantee.
Option 2: Hold the layout under the frame
For a no-glue arrangement, place the dry page and botanicals beneath the frame glass or against the backing so the assembled layers hold the pieces in place. Goodwill NCW demonstrates this simpler approach. It lets you rearrange the plants before closing the frame and avoids adding liquid to the page, but the fit must be snug enough that pieces cannot slide when the frame is moved.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Frame the finished piece
- Confirm that any glued areas are fully dry.
- Clean the inside of the glass so dust is not trapped with the artwork.
- Place the page squarely, with the intended text or illustration visible.
- Add the backing and close the frame without crushing raised plant parts.
- Lift the frame carefully and check that nothing has shifted before hanging it.
If a flower is unusually thick, choose a deeper frame or a spacer so the glass does not press directly on it. A flat design usually fits a standard picture frame; the page’s final dimensions, not the original book size, determine the frame size.
Display and care
Control light
Hang the art away from direct sunlight and other strong light sources. Mississippi State University Extension recommends this specifically to help preserve flower color. The guidance does not quantify how long colors will last, so avoid claims that any specimen will retain its original color indefinitely.

Choose a dry interior location rather than a place exposed to splashes, steam or repeated condensation. Do not open the frame unnecessarily; handling can break brittle petals and introduce moisture or dust. If you notice condensation, softening or a musty odor, remove the artwork from display and inspect for dampness or mold. Separate affected pieces from other pressed material and do not seal visibly damp specimens back into a frame.

Troubleshooting common problems
The plant material is still flexible after the stated drying time
Time estimates are not interchangeable. Return the pieces to absorbent layers under weight and continue pressing. Replace damp paper in a layered press, and wait until the thickest part is dry rather than mounting on the first date that has passed.
The page wrinkles after gluing
The adhesive layer was likely too wet or too heavy. Let the work dry flat under light, even protection if the plant forms allow it; for the next piece, brush on less glue and avoid saturating the paper.
A specimen breaks while you arrange it
Use tweezers and support the piece from underneath with a scrap of paper. Pressing extra copies of fragile leaves or petals gives you a replacement without disturbing the whole layout.

The design looks lost against the text
Move the plants toward a quieter margin or an area with fewer printed lines. Remove one or two pieces to restore negative space, or choose a page with a more open illustration. The background should support the botanical forms rather than compete with them.
Pieces shift inside a no-glue frame
Reopen the frame and adjust the backing or use a thinner, flatter arrangement. If the frame cannot hold the pieces securely, mount the design with a very light adhesive layer and allow it to dry before closing the frame.
Three decisions that shape the result
| Decision | Lower-cost or flexible choice | Purpose-made choice | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pressing setup | Heavy book with non-glazed pages | Dedicated flower press | Both are identified as workable methods; no product-performance comparison is established. |
| Mounting | Place the dry layout under glass or backing | Brush on a thin layer of craft glue | Both methods are described; their relative long-term preservation is not tested. |
| Page source | Unwanted or damaged book | Secondhand book selected for typography or illustration | Both protect usable books and support the reclaimed-material premise. |
Choose the pressing method based on how often you will make the project, the mounting method based on whether you want a rearrangeable or fixed layout, and the page based on the amount of visual space your specimens need.
Quick Recap
A repeatable project checklist
- The page came from an unwanted, damaged or secondhand book, not a good book.
- The frame size and any trim lines were checked before cutting.
- Flowers, leaves and grasses were separated while pressing.
- Non-glazed pages or absorbent layers were used, with damp sheets replaced when needed.
- Every specimen was completely dry before it touched the art page.
- The composition was arranged and photographed before adhesive was applied.
- Glue, if used, was brushed on thinly and allowed to dry before framing.
- The finished frame was placed away from direct and strong light.
