Microsoft Word has no button labeled “Bubble Letters.” The dependable method is to combine WordArt, a bold rounded font, and a thick text outline. In desktop Word, go to Insert > WordArt, type your word, choose a rounded font, then use Shape Format > Text Fill and Text Outline to create the inflated look. You can leave the fill blank for coloring pages, curve the letters, or add restrained decorative effects.

What bubble letters are—and what Word actually provides
Bubble letters are oversized, soft-edged letters with rounded strokes and roomy interiors. They may be colorful, hollow, double-outlined, arched, shadowed, or shaded to resemble stickers or inflated type.

What you need
- Desktop Microsoft Word. Microsoft lists Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019, and Word 2016, with Mac variants where supported.
- A heavy, rounded display font installed on your computer. Availability differs by operating system, Office edition, language pack, and fonts you install yourself.
- A printer or PDF export if the lettering will become a worksheet, sign, invitation, or craft pattern.
Word for the web can display existing WordArt, but Microsoft says new WordArt must be added in desktop Word. See Microsoft’s current guidance.
How to make bubble letters in Word
- Open a blank document. Use portrait or landscape orientation according to the word’s length.
- Insert the editable object. Choose Insert > WordArt, then select a relatively simple preset.
- Enter your text. Replace the sample text with the word or phrase you want to design.
- Choose the font. Select the letters, open the Home tab, and choose the roundest bold font available. Look for thick strokes, rounded terminals, and wide counters in letters such as A, B, P, R, and O.
- Increase the size. Use a large point size—often 60–150 pt, depending on the word and page—but judge it at the size you will print.
- Set the inside color. Select the WordArt, open Shape Format (called Drawing Tools Format in some older versions), choose Text Fill, and select a solid color. Pale fill with a dark border is easy to print.
- Create the bubble border. Choose Text Outline, select a contrasting color, then open Text Outline > Weight and increase the line until the letters read clearly. The right weight depends on the font, size, printer, and paper.
- Position the artwork. Drag the object’s handles to resize it, use the rotation handle or Shape Format > Rotate, and keep the entire design inside the page margins.
WordArt remains editable, so you can change the wording, font, fill, and outline later instead of replacing a screenshot.
Make hollow bubble letters for coloring pages
- Insert and format WordArt as above.
- Choose Text Fill > No Fill.
- Set Text Outline to black or another dark color.
- Increase the outline weight until it remains visible on paper.
- Print one test page before making a class set or batch of copies.
Text with no fill is visible only when it has an outline. If a home printer produces faint lines, use a darker outline, a heavier weight, a larger font, or a higher-quality print setting.

- Double ended markers with one narrow tip and one broad tip offer versatile strokes at the flip of a wrist
- Write expressively, fill in detailed coloring book pages, or create elaborate designs with two-in-one calligraphy markers
- Non-toxic water-based pigmented ink produces bold, brilliant colors
- Acid-free, lightfast archival ink leaves lasting, non-fading marks on paper or common arts and craft materials
Curve or arch the lettering
- Click the WordArt object.
- Choose Shape Format > Text Effects > Transform.
- Select an arch, curve, circle, or another transformation.
- Adjust the object’s proportions after applying the transform. Resize from a corner rather than a side when possible.
A moderate arch is usually more legible than a full circle. Long phrases may need separate WordArt objects because Transform can stretch or compress letters.
Add color, gradients, shadows, or a sticker edge
Solid and gradient fills
Use Text Fill for a solid color. For a shaded effect, choose Text Fill > Gradient, then use More Fill Colors or More Gradients for custom stops and colors. Keep strong contrast between fill and outline when the result must print clearly. Microsoft’s fill and effect options are described at Add or delete a fill, outline, or effect for WordArt in Word.
Simple dimensional effects
Under Text Effects, Word provides shadow, reflection, glow, bevel, and 3-D rotation. Use them sparingly: a large shadow or glow can blur counters and make printable letters harder to read.

Two-layer sticker lettering
- Format a main WordArt object with a dark, thick outline.
- Duplicate it and send the duplicate behind the original.
- Give the rear copy a larger, contrasting outline.
- Give the front copy a lighter fill and narrower outline.
- Align the copies, then group them if you want to move them together.
This layered approach is a design workaround, not a dedicated Bubble Letters command.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Color individual letters
WordArt normally treats a phrase as one object, but you can sometimes select characters inside the WordArt text and format them separately. If character-level formatting is awkward, create one WordArt object per letter, assign each a different fill, align the objects manually, and group them when finished. This provides control at the cost of slower spacing and alignment.
Fix missing controls and common problems
“Text Fill” or “Text Outline” is missing
- Click directly on the letters, not merely the surrounding box; double-click to enter text-editing mode if needed.
- Look for Shape Format, Drawing Tools Format, or WordArt Styles, depending on your Word version and window width.
- Choose Text Fill and Text Outline, not Shape Fill and Shape Outline. Shape controls affect the container; text controls affect the letters.
- If the object is ordinary text or a text box, recreate it with Insert > WordArt.
“Transform” is missing
- Confirm that you selected Text Effects, then look for Transform.
- Make sure the object is WordArt rather than an ordinary text box.
- Use desktop Word and expand the WordArt Styles group if the ribbon is compressed; narrow windows may show icons without labels.
The letters are too thin or the outline is too heavy
- Choose a heavier rounded font or increase the font size.
- Increase outline weight for thin lettering, but reduce it if counters in A, B, P, R, or e begin to close.
- Remove large shadows and glows that soften the edges.
The phrase wraps or the curved text distorts
- Widen the WordArt box, reduce the size slightly, switch to landscape orientation, or split the phrase into separate objects.
- For curved text, widen the box before applying Transform and try a moderate arch instead of a full circle.
Print bubble letters cleanly
- Test at the final print size; a screen preview does not predict every home printer’s line weight.
- Keep a dark, sufficiently thick outline and leave safe margins around the object.
- Use No Fill for coloring sheets only after confirming the outline is visible on paper.
- Use landscape orientation for long words when it gives the letters more horizontal room.
- Export to PDF when the layout must remain fixed on another computer or printer.
When another design tool makes more sense
Desktop Word is the natural choice for editable lettering inside a document, classroom worksheet, or printable sign. If you need templates, mobile editing, or a broader graphics workflow, browser-based tools may be more convenient.

Can I make new bubble letters in Word for the web?
Microsoft says Word for the web can display existing WordArt, but adding new WordArt requires desktop Word.
What font is best for bubble letters?
Choose the heaviest rounded font available on your computer, with thick strokes, rounded terminals, wide counters, and clear print readability. No single font is installed on every Word system.

How do I make every letter a different color?
Try selecting individual characters inside the WordArt text. If that is impractical, create one WordArt object per letter, format each fill separately, align them, and group them.
Can I save the finished lettering as a picture?
Yes. You can copy or export the finished WordArt through Word’s normal picture or PDF workflows, but keeping the original WordArt preserves editability.
Can I use bubble-letter designs commercially?
Check the license for every downloaded font, template, or graphic and the terms of any subscription service. WordArt itself does not remove those licensing obligations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Bottom Line
For most printable projects, use desktop WordArt with a heavy rounded font, a pale or empty fill, and a dark outline whose weight survives a test print. Add Transform or layered copies only after the basic lettering is clear and legible.
