You can make French mute books at home by transforming ordinary hardbacks or paperbacks into decorative book objects. The simplest route is to paint intact hardback covers with chalk paint, then seal them with clear soft wax. For paperbacks, remove the covers and add handwritten brown-paper labels to the spines with matte Mod Podge. Both methods create the quiet, handmade appearance associated with French-style decorative books while using books you already own.

A mute book is a book presented primarily as a decorative object rather than as a readable title. The French term couverture muette refers to a plain or unlettered cover. In home décor, the books are often arranged as a neutral stack, with restrained covers, handmade-looking paper and understated spine labels.

The Restoration Hardware inspiration is its Petite Tomes (Set of 5) – Parchment. The product description presents blank pages, simple cover boards, torn paper, naturally stained linen bindings and timeworn labels. The US listing checked for this project reported the set as out of stock at that moment; availability can change by date and region, so treat it as visual inspiration rather than an assured source of materials.
A homemade version does not reproduce a factory-made object exactly. It gives you control over the number of books, the color, the amount of aging and whether the underlying book remains recognizable. The Unigumushane tutorial describes the painted-cover method as a lower-cost alternative, but its old price comparison is historical and should not be used as a current price guide.
Choose the treatment that fits your books
Start by deciding how much of each book you want to preserve and how finished you want the display to look. The two main methods use different formats and create different visual cues.

| Paperback label | Existing paperback | Original cover removed | Handwritten brown-paper label attached with matte Mod Podge | Clean handmade-paper look |
| Faux-antique fabric route | Inexpensive soft-cover book | Muslin, glue, paint and gesso details | Twine and fabric create the visible binding | Imitation antique finish |
Painted hardbacks are the least destructive choice because the book remains assembled and its original spine stays attached. The paperback route is better when you want a completely blank exterior and do not mind removing the original cover. The fabric route is the most theatrical and is useful when you want visible binding materials rather than a smooth painted block.
Materials for the chalk-paint and label methods
The Unigumushane tutorial lists the following supplies:
- Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White
- Annie Sloan Clear Soft Wax
- Brown paper lunch bags
- Scissors
- Matte Mod Podge
- An ultra-fine-tip black permanent marker
- Two craft brushes
- A clean, dry, lint-free rag
- A stack of hardback and paperback books
Keep a separate work surface for painted books and paper-label books. A brush used for wax should not carry wet paint into the finish, and a clean rag is important when you buff excess wax from a cover.

Method 1: Paint intact hardback books
1. Select and arrange the books
Choose hardbacks with covers you are comfortable changing. Arrange the stack before painting so you can see which covers and edges will be visible. The cited tutorial begins with the books arranged and their covers accessible; this also helps you notice whether a title, illustration or bright edge needs more coverage.
2. Apply the chalk paint
Use a craft brush to spread Old White chalk paint across the front cover, back cover, edges and creases. The tutorial reports that one coat produced the opaque finish its author wanted. Cover the creases carefully so the original color does not form a stripe where the cover bends, but avoid loading the hinge with a heavy ridge of paint.
3. Decide whether a second coat is needed
Let the first coat dry, then inspect the book in the same light in which it will be displayed. If the original color still shows through or the coverage looks uneven, the tutorial says another coat can be added. A second coat is optional, not a required part of the cited method.
4. Seal with clear soft wax
After the paint has dried, apply Annie Sloan Clear Soft Wax with a clean brush. Work in a thin, even layer over the painted surfaces, then use the clean lint-free rag to remove excess and smooth the finish. The wax is the tutorial’s sealing step; do not wax while the paint is still wet.
5. Add an aged effect only if it suits the stack
For a more timeworn appearance, the tutorial suggests applying dark wax over the clear wax. Use this selectively around edges, creases or recessed areas rather than turning every book the same muddy color. If you prefer the pale parchment look associated with the retail inspiration, stop after clear wax.
6. Check the hinges and edges
Open and close one finished book carefully. Look for paint bridging the hinge, wax collecting along an edge or a brush mark that catches on the neighboring book. Correct those spots before stacking the full set. The project is decorative, so a little variation can look handmade, but loose flakes and tacky surfaces should not be trapped between books.

Method 2: Turn paperbacks into labeled mute books
1. Remove the original covers
Use inexpensive paperbacks whose covers you no longer need. The cited method removes the original covers before any label is made. Work slowly at the spine so you do not tear pages from the text block. If a paperback has sentimental, collectible or reference value, choose a different book rather than altering it.
2. Cut label stock from a brown paper bag
Flatten a brown paper lunch bag and cut strips sized for the visible spines. Leave enough width for the label to wrap slightly around the spine if that helps it stay aligned, but keep the edges neat. Brown paper supplies the uneven, humble surface that a smooth commercial label would not provide.
3. Handwrite the spine titles
Use the ultra-fine-tip black permanent marker to write a short title or a simple identifying word on each label. Varying the lettering slightly makes the set feel made by hand. Test the marker on a scrap of the same bag first; the paper should accept the ink without feathering badly.
4. Attach the labels with matte Mod Podge
Brush a light coat of matte Mod Podge onto the spine area, position the paper label, and smooth it from the center outward. The tutorial specifically calls for a light coat, which helps avoid saturating the thin paper. Brush a restrained top coat over the label if needed to secure the edges, then let the adhesive dry before stacking.
5. Keep the labels visually consistent
Use a common label height and similar spacing, but do not force identical handwriting. A set looks intentional when the papers share a color and proportion while the titles retain small differences. If a label wrinkles severely, remove it only after the adhesive has dried and replace it with a fresh piece rather than adding more layers over the wrinkle.
A faux-antique fabric alternative
Bel’ Occhio’s 2016 tutorial describes a separate route using inexpensive soft-cover books, twine, glue, natural-colored muslin, Mod Podge, black craft paint, gesso, a flat brush and a craft knife. Instead of making a smooth painted cover, this approach builds a fabric-and-twine surface that imitates an old binding.

Treat that method as decorative fabrication, not repair. The materials create the appearance of age; they do not restore an original binding or make a modern paperback historically authentic. Because the method uses a craft knife and adhesive, protect your work surface and keep the blade directed away from your hands. Follow the tutorial’s sequence for cutting, covering and detailing rather than improvising on a book you might later want to read.

Use one palette
Old White paint, brown paper and natural muslin all sit in a muted range. Keep the stack within that family if you want the quiet parchment effect. A single dark-waxed book can work as an accent, but dark wax on every volume will produce a substantially older, heavier look.
Vary height and orientation
Place the largest, most stable book at the bottom and alternate the direction of a few spines so the labels do not form a perfectly rigid column. Leave enough of each title visible to read the handmade treatment. For a narrow shelf, a short stack may be more convincing than a tall pile that leans.
Decide whether readability matters
Painted hardbacks retain their pages, covers and original spine, so they can still function as books if the altered finish is acceptable to you. Removing a paperback cover creates a decorative text block with a new exterior; choose that route when the display matters more than preserving the original presentation. If you need books that remain fully legible and attractive as reading copies, use the hardback method or keep an unaltered copy elsewhere.
Troubleshooting common problems
The original cover color still shows
Inspect the edges and hinge first, because those areas are easy to miss. Add the optional second coat described in the tutorial after the first coat has dried. Keep the brush moving evenly rather than piling paint into one corner.

The finish looks too new
Clear wax alone gives a cleaner result. If you want more age, add dark wax over the clear layer as the tutorial recommends, concentrating it where natural handling would leave shadows: along edges, in creases and near the spine. Apply less than you think you need; additional dark wax is easier to add than to remove.

The wax looks streaky
Use the clean, dry, lint-free rag to lift excess wax and even the sheen. Check the surface from several angles before it is placed in the stack. A heavy deposit along an edge can transfer to the neighboring book, so remove visible ridges while the wax is workable.
The paper label lifts at a corner
Lift the loose section carefully, add a small amount of matte Mod Podge beneath it and press the paper flat. The cited method relies on a light coat, so avoid flooding the label. Hold the corner down until it stays in place, then allow the adhesive to dry before handling the book again.
The books look like unrelated projects
Standardize one feature: label width, paint color, handwriting scale or the amount of aging. You do not need to make every volume identical. Repeating one visual decision is usually enough to make hardbacks, labeled paperbacks or fabric-covered books read as a single collection.
Preservation, safety and realistic expectations
Neither the painted-cover tutorial nor the fabric tutorial is a book-conservation treatment. Paint, wax, adhesive, cutting and cover removal permanently alter the objects. The cited sources do not provide durability testing or long-term evidence about how the finishes behave after years of handling, sunlight or changes in humidity.
Use duplicates, inexpensive reading copies or books already destined for display. Keep wet or tacky pieces away from finished furniture and other books. When using a craft knife, cut on a stable surface and store the blade safely. If the project is for a child, an adult should handle the knife, wax and permanent marker.
Planning the project without relying on outdated prices
The tutorial frames the DIY approach as less expensive than the retail set, but its comparison reflects the time it was written. Supply costs vary by paint size, adhesive, book quantity and where you shop. Plan from the materials list rather than treating an old retail-versus-DIY figure as a current promise.
For a small trial, begin with one hardback and one paperback. That lets you compare the painted and labeled finishes before committing a whole shelf of books. Once you know which surface, lettering scale and aging level you prefer, repeat the same choices across the rest of the stack.
