Turn an unwanted framed print, scrap board, or piece of discarded cardboard into a personal word sign by treating the existing surface as part of the design. Decide whether to paint directly on it, cover it with a prepared ground, use its frame as a border, or build a separate cardboard sign. Then plan the lettering, choose between freehand, template, stencil, or collage methods, and match the paint and finish to the surface and where the sign will hang.

The often-repeated idea of remaking saved wine prints as rustic typography signs comes from an inaccessible tutorial, so the exact procedure and result cannot be verified here. The methods below are documented in museum and educational making resources and should be adapted to the cast-off object in front of you.

Start by assessing the cast-off object

Look for a stable, reasonably flat surface: a framed print, reclaimed wooden board, heavy cardboard, or discarded printed carton. Reclaimed wood, thick cardboard, and printed cardboard all provide useful grounds for lettering. Their stains, faded color, paper wear, wood grain, printed words, and corrugation can become visual features instead of defects.

Three ways to use an old framed print

  1. Paint on the existing print. This preserves the image beneath the word. Test a small hidden area first, especially if the paper is glossy, coated, or fragile.
  2. Cover the image with a prepared surface. A firmly attached paper, card, or painted ground gives you a more uniform background while retaining the frame.
  3. Remove the print and use the frame as a border. Fit a board or new piece of card inside it, or display the frame around a separate sign.

These are practical adaptations rather than steps confirmed by the inaccessible framed-print tutorial. Before painting, check for loose backing, exposed glass, sharp frame corners, warped board, rusty points, and hanging hardware that no longer feels secure. Remove or stabilize anything that could cut you or shift while you work. Do not rely on old hardware until the finished object is light enough for it and the attachment is sound.

Let the material’s previous life shape the typography

A cast-off surface does not need to look new. The Seattle Art Museum’s found-material assemblage activity recommends arranging pieces before fastening them, preserving visible traces of their earlier use, and combining varied shapes and textures. Apply that thinking to a sign: place the word where an old printed phrase, a patch of exposed paper, or a strip of wood grain can frame it.

  • Leave a band of the original image visible around the letters when it adds color or context.
  • Use a torn edge, exposed corrugation, or a faded block of type as a deliberate border.
  • Cut collage letters from scraps when dimension and texture matter more than a perfectly painted face.
  • Rotate the object before committing to a layout; a former landscape print may work better as a vertical word panel.

Arrange all loose pieces before gluing or painting. This lets you judge the whole composition and keeps the sign from becoming a collection of unrelated scraps.

Choose a lettering method

Pick the process that matches the look you want, how many signs you may make, and the tools available. No controlled source comparison establishes a universal winner for speed, cost, durability, or beginner success.

Method Useful when Trade-offs
Hand-painted lettering You want a one-off sign with visible handmade character. No stencil cutting is needed, but spacing and consistent letter shapes require planning.
Template-assisted lettering You need to position a word accurately on reclaimed board before painting. A template transfers the design; the workshop description does not prescribe one universal template type.
Cut cardboard stencil You want filled block letters or may repeat the same design on multiple signs. It requires suitable cardboard and careful cutting. Tabs must hold enclosed letter centers in place.
Collage or dimensional letters You want printed marks, corrugation, and material history to remain prominent. Assemblage guidance supports composition ideas, not tested sign construction or weather durability.

Plan a short, legible message

Short wording is easier to space and remains visible from across a room. Sketch the phrase on paper at roughly the proportions of the finished sign before touching the surface. Mark a safe margin around the edges, then check the design from a few steps away.

Measure before drawing letters

  1. Measure the usable width and height inside the frame or on the board.
  2. Draw a light centerline and, if useful, mark the horizontal and vertical halfway points.
  3. Divide the available width into evenly spaced letter areas. Leave deliberate gaps between words rather than squeezing every character to the edge.
  4. Draw one block letter in each area. Keep the tops and bottoms aligned unless a deliberately irregular arrangement is part of the design.
  5. Compare the background and lettering colors. Strong contrast is particularly important for a cardboard message; a dark letter on a light ground or a light letter on a dark ground is easier to read than closely related tones.

If the original artwork is the star, use fewer words and a smaller lettering area so the image can remain visible. If the message is the star, simplify the background rather than adding decorative marks that compete with the letters.

Hand-paint a one-off sign

A basic hand-painted route needs a sound reclaimed board or prepared art surface, pencil, layout paper, acrylic paint, and brushes. A Foundling Museum workshop description uses reclaimed wooden board, templates, brushes, and paint to transfer a chosen word or initials; specialist brushes are not a requirement for a home project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Make a paper mock-up. Write the word in the intended style and trim the paper to the sign’s proportions. Move it around until the margins and relationship to the original art feel balanced.
  2. Transfer a light guide. Copy the baseline, cap height, and letter outlines with a soft pencil. Keep lines light enough to erase or cover.
  3. Block in the background if needed. If the print is too busy, apply a thin, even ground and allow it to dry before marking the letters. On a valuable or delicate print, stop and choose a reversible cover instead of painting the original.
  4. Paint the large shapes first. Work from the background toward the foreground. Use enough paint for opaque coverage without flooding the paper or cardboard.
  5. Refine edges after drying. Correct wobbly sides with the background color or a second lettering coat. Remove pencil marks only when the paint and surface are fully dry.

Hand painting rewards a measured layout more than speed. A slightly irregular edge can look intentional when the spacing and overall alignment are controlled.

Cut and use a reusable cardboard stencil

The Institute of Modern Art’s 2023 stencil resource documents a repeatable process using heavy-duty cardboard, pencil, ruler, knife, cutting mat, acrylic paint, and a brush. The same stencil can transfer one design to multiple signs.

Draw the stencil

  1. Place the cardboard on a protected cutting surface. Mark the horizontal and vertical halfway points so the design can be centered.
  2. Divide the usable width into letter spaces, allowing for word gaps and a margin around the outside.
  3. Draw one bold block letter in each space. Avoid hairline strokes that will be difficult to cut or paint cleanly.
  4. Add small connecting tabs wherever a letter has an enclosed center. The centers of O, A, D, P, and R otherwise fall out of the stencil.

Cut and paint

  1. Cut on the mat with a sharp knife, turning the cardboard rather than forcing the blade around tight corners. Replace a dull or damaged blade.
  2. Keep the stencil flat against the sign. Tape the outer edges if the surface allows it, or hold it firmly with a free hand away from the cutting area.
  3. Apply acrylic paint with a controlled brush through the openings. Use a dabbing motion and avoid loading the brush so heavily that paint can seep under the edges.
  4. Lift the stencil carefully while the paint is still workable, then let the lettering dry before adding a second coat or moving the sign.

Stencil tabs remain visible as small bridges in enclosed letters. Leave them as part of the graphic style or touch them up freehand after the paint has dried.

Build a simple cardboard sign

For a sign made entirely from cardboard, gather large cardboard, a utility knife and spare blades, cutting mat, scissors, acrylic or latex paint, brushes, pencil, paper, ruler, glue, and masking tape. A single-sided sign is faster when only one face is needed. For a double-sided sign, cut two matching pieces and join them together so the message can be read from either direction.

  1. Mark the panel. Use the paper layout to place the word, keeping a generous margin so the edges do not crowd the lettering.
  2. Cut the shape. Score long lines with the utility knife and finish corners carefully. Use scissors for sections they can cut cleanly.
  3. Reinforce if required. Glue a second matching panel behind the first and hold the edges with masking tape while the adhesive sets.
  4. Paint the face. Use acrylic or latex for cardboard. Apply thin coats and let each coat dry before turning or stacking the panel.
  5. Add a stencil or painted letters. Transfer a short, high-contrast message using the stencil process or a paper template.

The 350.org cardboard-sign guide also describes attaching signs to a pole for carried messages. That construction advice is specific to cardboard signs; it does not establish that a reused framed artwork is suitable for pole mounting.

Select paint and finish for the substrate

Acrylic paint is the clearest documented choice for stencil work and cardboard signs. The cardboard guidance also names latex paint. Tempera may run or wash away if a sign gets wet, so it is a poor choice for a surface that may encounter rain or repeated wiping.

  • The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.
  • These versatile brushes are ready-to-use, easy to clean, and can be reused multiple times, making them economical as well as reliable tools for any painting project.
  • Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
  • Paper or a printed framed artwork: Test a hidden patch first. Glossy coatings can resist paint, while thin paper can buckle under a wet coat.
  • Reclaimed wood: Brush away loose dust, retain sound grain and marks, and test coverage on an inconspicuous area before deciding whether to seal or paint the entire board.
  • Cardboard: Keep coats light, support the panel while it dries, and protect the edges from soaking. Acrylic or latex is documented; tempera is vulnerable to moisture.
  • Mixed-media collage: Let glue and paint dry fully between stages. The assemblage approach values varied textures, so a completely uniform finish is optional.

Do not promise outdoor durability simply because a paint is called acrylic or latex. Exposure depends on the paper, ink, wood, cardboard, frame, seams, and any protective coating. If the sign will live outdoors, state the limitations of those materials and place it where rain and prolonged sun are minimized unless you have verified a suitable exterior system.

Use the frame and hang the finished piece safely

Reuse existing frame hardware only after checking that screws, wire, brackets, and backing are tight and appropriate for the finished weight. A painted print may weigh differently from the original glass-and-paper assembly. If the hardware is loose, replace it with a mounting method rated for the object and wall rather than assuming the old attachment is adequate.

For cardboard, avoid attaching a heavy frame or hardware that can tear the panel. A lightweight interior display, removable tape suited to the wall, or a separate support can be safer than forcing a hanger through the cardboard. The documented cardboard source concerns pole-mounted signs, not wall-hanging hardware for reused art.

When a collage is better than painted type

Choose dimensional letters when the cast-off material itself should carry the message. Cut characters from scraps of printed cardboard, arrange torn paper or wood pieces, and leave selected marks exposed. The Seattle Art Museum activity’s emphasis on arranging components first, retaining traces of prior use, and mixing shapes and textures is useful here, even though it is an assemblage lesson rather than a sign-durability test.

Keep the word readable by controlling one variable at a time: use a consistent baseline, repeat a color, or reserve a quiet area behind the letters. A completely varied surface can be expressive but may need larger characters and stronger contrast to remain legible.

An art-history cue for expressive lettering

Claes Oldenburg’s Empire Sign – With M and I Deleted (1960), recorded by the Museum of Modern Art as casein on cut-and-pasted cardboard, shows how humble material and altered lettering can create a forceful sign-like image. The collection record connects the work to street-graffiti visual language and notes Oldenburg’s omission of letters. In a 1963 comment quoted there, he said, “Where I use writing, I should like to provoke a physical effect of enunciation.”

You do not need to imitate that artwork. Its useful lesson is that a missing letter, an interrupted word, or a visible cardboard edge can be an intentional visual decision rather than a flaw.

Fix common problems before they become permanent

  • The word feels cramped: Erase and redraw the letter areas with wider margins. Shorten the phrase if the message matters more than preserving every word.
  • Enclosed letter centers shift: Add or enlarge stencil tabs before painting. For hand-painted letters, redraw the inner shapes with a ruler or template.
  • Paint bleeds under a stencil: Use less paint, hold the stencil flatter, and dab instead of brushing sideways across the edge.
  • Cardboard curls: Reduce wet paint, support the panel while it dries, and add a matching backing panel if the design permits.
  • The original art disappears: Stop adding coverage and reposition the lettering on a new mock-up. The frame can still be reused around a separate board.
  • The sign is hard to read: Increase contrast, enlarge the letters, remove competing marks behind the word, or reduce the message to its essential phrase.
