DIY velvet ornaments can be made five different ways, and the right method depends on the surface you want and whether you already have a hard ornament blank. Stretch velvet can be gathered over a plastic bauble without sewing, non-stretch velvet can be fitted as glued panels, flocking creates a velvet-like coating rather than a fabric cover, and fabric can also be sewn into a stuffed ornament. Velvet yarn is a separate wrapped finish. The instructions below explain the materials, sequence, top treatment and likely trouble spots for each build.

Choose the ornament construction before buying materials

Start by deciding whether the ornament will keep a rigid ball inside it. A plastic ornament blank gives the gathered, paneled and flocked methods their shape. A sewn ornament has no hard core and is filled with polyester stuffing. Velvet yarn is wrapped around an existing ornament and produces a visibly ridged surface rather than a cloth shell.

Method Finished surface Core Main construction Top or hanging finish
Gathered stretch velvet Continuous velvet fabric with gathers at the neck Plastic ornament ball Drape, gather and secure with two small rubber bands A larger replacement cap covers the gathered fabric
Glued velvet panels Tailored fabric surface with panel joins Ornament ball Cut and adhere six to eight narrow panels, one at a time Use the ornament’s top hardware or another suitable hanging finish
Flocked coating Short fibers that look velvet-like but are not fabric Ornament ball Brush on adhesive, apply flocking fibers while tacky, then dry Ribbon or existing top hardware can be added
Sewn and stuffed Soft fabric shape None Sew front and back pieces, fill, then close the opening Sew a hanging loop into the seam
Velvet yarn wrap Textured rows of velvet yarn Existing ornament Glue closely spaced rows and let each section set Leave the original cap and hanger accessible

The methods are not interchangeable. Flocking should be described as a velvet-effect finish, not as a fabric-covered ornament. The gathered approach minimizes measuring and stitching; panels demand more precise placement; flocking involves loose fibers and adhesive; and sewing requires either a machine or hand finishing.

Method 1: Cover a plastic ornament with gathered stretch velvet

This is the simplest fabric cover when you want a smooth body with controlled gathers only at the top. It uses stretch velvet, so the cloth can conform to the ball without cutting a pattern.

Materials

  • A plastic ornament ball
  • Stretch velvet with enough extra fabric to reach past the neck
  • Scissors
  • Two small rubber bands
  • A larger replacement ornament cap

Step-by-step

  1. Remove the ornament’s original cap carefully. Set it aside while you check how much room the gathered fabric will need.
  2. Place the ball in the middle of the velvet and pull the fabric evenly around it. Keep the fabric’s nap running in one consistent direction; velvet can look lighter or darker when the pile is reversed.
  3. Smooth the cloth over the body with your hands. Work out broad folds before gathering the excess at the neck.
  4. Collect the fabric at the neck and secure it with the first small rubber band. Add the second band beside it so the bundle does not loosen while you trim.
  5. Trim the gathered tail, but leave enough material below the bands to remain captured under the cap. The tutorial for this method does not specify a cap size, so test the replacement cap over the bundle before making a final cut.
  6. Fit the larger replacement cap over the gathered fabric. Press the cap down evenly so it hides the bands and creates the finished top.

How to get a cleaner result

Stretch the velvet gradually instead of pulling hard from one side. Uneven tension creates a diagonal nap and a lopsided gather. If the cap will not cover the bundle, do not force it: remove the cap, shorten the tail slightly, and re-secure the fabric. If the fabric slips before the cap is installed, add tension with the second rubber band rather than adding glue to the ornament body.

Method 2: Build a tailored surface from velvet panels

Paneling works with non-stretch velvet and gives you more control over the fit than a single gathered piece. One tutorial suggests six to eight narrow panels. That count is a starting approach, not a universal measurement: the ideal width depends on the ornament’s size, the fabric’s thickness and how much overlap you can hide.

Materials

  • A plastic or other rigid ornament ball
  • Non-stretch velvet
  • Scissors
  • Fabric glue or spray adhesive
  • A hot glue gun for securing selected areas or the top finish

Step-by-step

  1. Cut six to eight long, narrow panels. Make each panel long enough to travel from the top area, over the widest part of the ball, and toward the opposite top area. Cut a little extra at first; you can trim after checking the fit.
  2. Dry-fit the panels around the ball before applying adhesive. Arrange them so the nap points the same way and the gaps between panels are as even as possible.
  3. Apply the chosen adhesive to one panel or to the area the product label allows. Spray adhesive and fabric glue have different application requirements, so follow the label for ventilation, coverage and set time.
  4. Place the first panel and smooth it from the center toward its edges. Avoid stretching non-stretch velvet; stretching can distort the pile and make the next panel harder to align.
  5. Add the remaining panels one at a time. Keep each new edge close to the previous one without creating a bulky ridge. Smooth the join while the adhesive is workable.
  6. Trim excess fabric at the top and bottom only after all panels are positioned. Use small cuts rather than one deep cut so you do not expose the ornament beneath a join.
  7. Use the hot glue gun where the tutorial calls for extra securing, particularly around an edge or top fitting. Keep glue off the visible velvet whenever possible.

Managing visible joins

Panel seams are easiest to disguise when they meet at the same points around the ball. If a gap appears, lift only the loose edge, add the appropriate adhesive, and press it back into place. A wide overlap can look like a ridge, so trimming and re-positioning is usually cleaner than piling on more glue. Do not assume that six panels will fit every ornament; use the dry-fit stage to decide whether narrower or wider pieces are needed.

Method 3: Make a flocked velvet-effect ornament

Flocking is a coating process. You spread adhesive over the ornament, cover the tacky surface with short fibers, and let the piece dry on a support. The result can resemble velvet from a distance, but it is not a layer of velvet fabric and should not be handled as though it were one.

Materials

  • An ornament ball, with one tutorial using ornaments about 2.5 to 4 inches across
  • Flocking adhesive or adhesive paint
  • Flocking fibers
  • Paint and a brush, if you want a matching base color beneath the fibers
  • A support that lets the coated ornament dry without touching a wet area
  • Optional ribbon for the finished top

Step-by-step

  1. Prepare the ornament and your work surface. Loose flocking fibers travel easily, so protect the surrounding area and keep the ornament on a support that will not imprint the coating.
  2. Paint the ball a color close to the flocking, if desired. One tutorial uses matching paint so small thin spots are less conspicuous.
  3. Apply the adhesive or adhesive paint in an even layer. Work in sections if the product begins to set quickly; the fibers need to meet adhesive while it is still tacky.
  4. Sprinkle or press flocking fibers onto the coated section before it dries. Cover the adhesive generously rather than brushing across it, which can create bare streaks.
  5. Press or dab the fibers into place as the tutorial directs. Rotate the ornament and repeat until the visible surface is covered.
  6. Set the ornament on its support and allow it to dry according to the adhesive label. A specific drying time is not established by the tutorial, so do not hang it until the coating feels set and no wet adhesive transfers.
  7. Add ribbon or reinstall the top hardware after the surface is dry and the fitting can be handled without disturbing the fibers.

Thin spots and mess

If the base color shows through, add fibers while the adhesive is still receptive; brushing dry fibers onto a dry surface will not replace the adhesive layer. The author of one flocking tutorial describes the process as messy and says gloves would have helped. Treat that as a practical personal observation, not a formal safety standard, and follow the precautions printed on your adhesive and paint.

Method 4: Sew a soft, stuffed velvet ornament

This version does not need a plastic ball. It creates a lightweight fabric shape that can be made from velvet or another fabric with a similar pile. A tutorial describes a roughly 3-inch ornament and a small amount of polyester filling, but the pattern size and filling quantity must be adjusted to your own template.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Materials

  • Velvet or another ornament fabric
  • Thread and a needle
  • Scissors
  • Polyester filling
  • A sewing machine for the main seam, if available
  • A wooden dowel for pushing filling into narrow corners

Step-by-step

  1. Cut matching front and back fabric pieces. Mark the seam allowance and the small opening you will leave for turning and stuffing.
  2. Cut a hanging loop and place it between the fabric pieces at the top, with the loop’s ends inside the seam allowance. Pin or baste it so it cannot shift.
  3. Sew around the shape, leaving the marked opening. Backstitch or otherwise secure the seam ends.
  4. Turn the piece right side out. Use the wooden dowel gently to push filling into points and corners; do not use the dowel as a lever that could puncture the fabric.
  5. Add polyester filling a little at a time. Distribute it from the farthest corners toward the opening so the shape fills evenly rather than forming one hard lump.
  6. Close the opening by hand with small stitches that match the edge. Knot the thread securely and hide the tail inside the ornament if possible.

Shape and pile considerations

Cut both sides with the velvet nap oriented the same way. If the front and back pieces are reversed, the ornament can appear to change color across its center. Keep the filling loose enough for the seams to lie flat; overfilling can pull the opening apart while you stitch it closed.

Method 5: Wrap an ornament with velvet yarn

Velvet yarn creates a tactile, corded surface rather than a continuous fabric cover. The method uses an existing ornament, glue and velvet yarn, with rows arranged closely and allowed to set as the work progresses.

  • Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.

Step-by-step

  1. Clean and dry the ornament so the glue can contact its surface.
  2. Plan where the first row will begin and keep the original cap accessible. Apply glue only to a manageable section.
  3. Lay the yarn in a close row, then add the next row beside it. Keep the spacing consistent so the ornament beneath does not show through.
  4. Let each glued section set before turning the ball or adding tension to a new section. Follow the adhesive label for handling and ventilation.
  5. At the top and bottom, trim the yarn neatly and secure the end where the cap or hanger can conceal it.

If rows drift, stop while the glue is still workable and reposition them. Adding more yarn over a misaligned row generally increases the ridge instead of hiding it.

Top treatments, hanging loops and final checks

The neck is the visual focal point of a covered ornament. For gathered velvet, the larger replacement cap is part of the construction because it hides the rubber bands. For flocked and yarn-wrapped ornaments, ribbon or the original top hardware can finish the piece. For a sewn ornament, the loop must be sewn into the top seam before the body is closed; adding it afterward requires a separate hand-sewn attachment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check that no raw fabric edge is visible where a cap or seam is meant to cover it.
  • Rotate the ornament under the light to find nap changes, adhesive smears, bare flocking areas or open panel joins.
  • Confirm that the hanging loop or cap is firmly attached before placing the ornament on a tree.
  • Keep the finished piece away from uncured adhesive and paint until the product label’s handling condition is met.

Adhesive, paint, scissors and needle precautions

Use spray adhesive, fabric glue, hot glue, paint and flocking products according to their individual labels, including ventilation, skin protection and drying instructions. Use ordinary care with sharp scissors, needles and a hot glue gun. The craft tutorials do not establish child-safe, pet-safe, washable, fire-safe or long-term durability ratings for any of these methods, so do not infer those properties from the appearance of the finished ornament.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The gathered cover looks lopsided

Remove the cap and loosen the bands. Smooth the velvet around the ball again, keeping the neck centered, then re-gather and trim only after the cap has been test-fitted.

Panel seams show large gaps

Dry-fit the remaining pieces before gluing. Narrower panels or a different starting position may distribute the circumference more evenly; do not assume the suggested six-to-eight count is mandatory.

Flocking has bare patches

Check whether the adhesive was still tacky when fibers were applied. Recoat only the bare area if the product label permits a second application, then add fibers before that layer dries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The stuffed ornament has hard lumps

Open the seam only if necessary, break up the filling and redistribute it with small additions. The dowel is useful for corners, but the bulk of the filling should be spread by hand.

Yarn rows keep sliding

Work in shorter glued sections and let each one set before rotating the ornament. Keep the yarn under light, even tension rather than pulling it tightly around the ball.
