Buy the exact base you find, then adapt the design and supplies to that package.

What “Dollar Tree Christmas art” can mean
The phrase covers several practical projects: decorating a small wood shape, painting a canvas, coloring a pre-cut ornament, or assembling a seasonal wall piece from inexpensive craft materials. Dollar Tree’s February 1, 2021 Crafter’s Square announcement identified wood crafts and picture frames, art paper, staple-backed canvases, acrylic paints and brushes, glitter, colored pencils, crayons, markers, jewels, beads, wreath-making supplies, ribbons, yarn, scrapbooking stickers and seasonal items. That announcement describes an assortment, not a current store-by-store inventory.
A separate same-day catalog result listed “Crafters Square Color-Your-Own Christmas Decoration Kits.” The captured price was $1.50 per item. The listing did not establish the exact design, contents, number of pieces, finished dimensions or nationwide availability, and assorted seasonal products can change. Think of it as a useful lead: if the kit is on the shelf, it can provide the decoration base and a simple prompt; if it is absent, the same art can be made from a blank canvas or wood shape and basic paint.
Dollar Tree’s corporate merchandise description also says its assortment changes and that shopping options can include case purchases, store pickup and local delivery in covered areas. Those options do not mean a particular Christmas art product is stocked at every location.

Choose a project before you shop
Decide whether the finished piece is an ornament, a small gift, a tabletop sign or wall art. The choice determines the base you need and prevents buying supplies that the kit already contains.

Shopping checklist: confirm first, supplement second
Read the kit label
Before opening your basket, photograph or note the front and back of the package. Look for the base material, included paints or markers, brush count, adhesive, hanging cord, instructions, age recommendation and finished size. “Assorted” packaging can mean that the design in one box differs from the design in another. Do not assume a pictured snowman, tree or reindeer is the one you will receive.

- Pencil, ruler and a scrap of paper for testing color and lettering.
- Painter’s tape for crisp borders and a paper plate or palette.

- Clear water-based sealer for a display piece, used only after paint is fully dry and according to its label.
These are optional additions, not confirmed contents of the Dollar Tree kit. If you are using markers or crayons on paper, skip acrylic paint unless the package says the surface accepts it.

How to make the art, step by step
- Protect the work area. Cover a table with paper or a washable mat. Keep water, paint and glitter away from food, electronics and fabric upholstery.
- Inspect and clean the base. Remove price stickers and loose dust. For a wood or canvas surface, wipe gently with a dry cloth. Do not soak a paper decoration.
- Plan the design. Lightly sketch a large central motif: a tree made from triangles, a row of stars, a snowman or a short greeting. Leave a margin so the design does not run into the edge or hanger.
- Block in the largest shapes. Paint the background or broad color areas first. Thin acrylic paint with only a little water; an over-thinned coat can become streaky. Let each coat dry before adding another.
- Add contrast and details. Use a smaller brush for eyes, ornaments, snowflakes and lettering. A white paint pen or marker can add highlights, but test it on scrap material because some markers bleed on porous paper.
- Control glitter and embellishments. Apply a narrow line of glue, sprinkle glitter over a tray, then tap off the excess. Add jewels or beads while the adhesive is tacky and keep them away from young children who might mouth loose pieces.
- Dry completely. Follow the paint label rather than judging by surface touch alone. Thick areas and glue under embellishments need longer. Keep the piece flat while drying so wet paint does not pool at the edge.
- Finish for its intended location. Add ribbon or twine through an existing hole. For a wall or tabletop item, apply a compatible clear sealer only if the surface and paint instructions allow it. A sealer can change gloss and may not be suitable for a flexible paper ornament.
Design ideas that work on assorted bases
Layered Christmas tree
Paint a deep green triangle or three stacked triangles, then add white dots for snow and small colored ornaments. A narrow brown trunk and a yellow star use simple shapes that fit wood, canvas or thick paper. If the base is already shaped like a tree, keep the background quiet so the silhouette remains visible.
Night-sky ornament
Cover a canvas or flat wood shape in dark blue, leaving a dry border. Add a white moon, scattered stars and a row of black rooftops or green trees along the bottom. Metallic paint is optional; white acrylic gives enough contrast when metallic colors are not included.
Name-and-date keepsake
Reserve the largest clear area for a first name or family surname, then place the year in a corner. Sketch the lettering first and use a fine brush or marker after the background dries. Because the cataloged kit’s size is not established, shorten the wording to fit rather than assuming a standard ornament dimension.

The 2021 Crafter’s Square announcement specifically named those bases and the paints, brushes, paper, glitter, markers, beads, ribbon and yarn that can support them. A basic canvas-and-acrylic setup gives you more control over the design than an assorted kit, while paper and markers are faster for a classroom or party.
A generic “Christmas paint your own canvas craft kit” is another substitute phrase for shopping elsewhere. It should not be presented as the same item as Dollar Tree’s cataloged decoration kit, and the evidence does not confirm an identical listing from any particular online retailer. Compare the base, included colors, tools, dimensions, age guidance and current price before buying.
Stock, price and timing precautions
- Seasonal displays can arrive after regular craft stock and disappear before Christmas; a shelf being empty does not prove the product was never carried.
- The recorded $1.50 price applies to the cataloged item when it was crawled. It is not a current nationwide price, a sale promise or a statement that every design costs the same.

Paint beads up or will not cover
The surface may be glossy, dusty or sealed. Wipe it clean, allow it to dry and apply several thin coats rather than one heavy coat. If the package identifies a specialty surface, use the medium recommended on its label instead of assuming acrylic will adhere.

Lettering looks uneven
Draw guide lines in pencil, write in shorter words and paint the background first. For a small decoration, block lettering is more legible than a detailed script. Remove pencil guides only after the paint is dry and test the eraser on an inconspicuous area.
Glitter spreads everywhere
Work over a tray, apply glue in small sections and pour unused glitter back into its container. A thin compatible sealer can reduce shedding after the adhesive has cured, but it may alter the finish.
The hanger tears out
Do not suspend a heavy embellishment from a thin paper edge. Reinforce the back with a small piece of strong tape or mount the art in a frame. For wood, use the existing hole or hardware rather than punching a new one close to the edge.

Read every label, especially for sealers, permanent markers and adhesives. Provide ventilation when a product requires it, wash hands after painting and keep water cups away from drinking glasses. Young children should have adult supervision around scissors, small beads, glitter and any kit warning. Never assume that a seasonal decoration is food-safe, weatherproof or suitable for outdoor use because it looks finished.
Clean brushes immediately with the method stated on the paint label. Let rinse water settle before disposal if the product instructions call for special handling, and keep glitter and paint flakes out of sinks where they can harden or travel into plumbing.
A practical decision rule
Buy the color-your-own kit when its base, included tools and age guidance match your project and the current price fits your budget. Choose a blank canvas or wood shape when you need a specific size, a coordinated color palette or a design that must match existing décor. Choose paper and markers when speed, low mess and easy duplication matter most.
