A large, simple acrylic painting can give a guest bedroom a finished focal point without requiring advanced painting skills. The documented project uses a 30 × 40-inch canvas, five restrained colors—white, cream, grey, dark grey and navy—and two brushes. Its creator, Lindi of Love Create Celebrate, reported finishing the main painting in less than an hour, then adding a grey border after it dried. Treat that schedule as her experience, not a promise for every design or painter.

What this guest-bedroom artwork involves

The most useful starting point is scale. A 30 × 40-inch canvas has enough visual weight to work as a single statement above a bed, dresser or empty accent wall, so you do not need to make a gallery wall of small pieces. The example was created as the final DIY in a modern industrial guest-bedroom project. Lindi described it this way: “Today I’m sharing the final DIY from my Modern Industrial Guest Bedroom.” You can see her original supply list and process in Make Beautiful Canvas Art in Less Than an Hour! (published June 28, 2016; updated January 26, 2022).

The method is intentionally forgiving: establish broad areas first, build the image with layers, and reserve small highlights and the outside edge for the end. An abstract arrangement of blocks, bands or loose marks is particularly suitable because uneven brushwork becomes part of the design rather than an error to conceal.

Materials and quantities for the documented approach

Use a ready-made, stretched canvas if you want the shortest path from shopping to painting. The project below is based on the materials named by the tutorial, not on a product test or a current shopping list.

Material What the project specifies How to use it
Canvas One 30 × 40-inch large canvas Use it as the main wall-scale artwork; confirm the wall and hanging hardware can support its size.
Acrylic paint White, cream, grey, dark grey and navy Keep the palette limited so the painting relates to the room instead of competing with it.
Brushes Two paintbrushes One can handle broad areas and the other smaller marks or edges; the source does not state their sizes or shapes.
Border color Grey, painted after the artwork dried Use the grey to visually contain the composition and finish the canvas edge.

The tutorial links to a canvas and two brushes, but stock, specifications and prices can change. Check the linked page and the retailer listing at the time you buy rather than assuming an older recommendation is still available.

Optional supplies for a more involved version

A separate beginner guide suggests working with a variety of brushes, acrylic paints and a makeshift palette made from a cookie sheet, damp paper towels and parchment paper. Its author also recommends having a reference image. Those additions are optional: they give you more control over marks and keep paint workable while you plan, but they are not required for the two-brush project.

For raised or tactile details, a Home Depot guide lists acrylic craft paint, brushes, painter’s tape and tools for texture, framing and hanging. Read How to Make Canvas Paintings for those optional construction and finishing ideas. Building a stretched canvas from lumber and drop cloth is also described there, but it is an alternative project, not a prerequisite for this guest-bedroom artwork.

Choose a composition before opening the paint

You do not need to copy a particular painting. Decide what kind of visual organization will make the canvas feel intentional from the doorway.

Abstract blocks and bands

Use a reference image only for its large divisions, not for exact details. Look for two or three dominant shapes, then translate them into broad rectangles, diagonals or irregular fields. This is the most forgiving option for a first canvas because small deviations do not destroy likeness.

Loose representational shapes

If you want a recognizable landscape, architectural form or object, reduce the reference to its largest light, middle and dark areas. Avoid beginning with tiny features. The beginner guide from Maison de Pax recommends identifying large shapes, lightly outlining key divisions, layering paint and adding highlights; its instructions are practical suggestions from that author rather than universal requirements. See Large DIY Painting for Beginners (posted October 5, 2022; updated December 8, 2025).

Room-matched or contrasting color

For a quiet guest room, repeat colors that already appear in bedding, curtains, rugs or an accent wall. Home Depot’s guide presents carrying an accent-wall color into the artwork as one coordination strategy. The five-color example—white, cream, grey, dark grey and navy—creates contrast through value while keeping hue changes restrained.

A deliberately contrasting accent is also valid. If you choose that route, make the new color a clear design decision rather than adding many unrelated colors. The sources document both restrained, room-matched color and optional contrast, but they do not establish one as objectively better.

Step-by-step: paint the large canvas

  1. Prepare the wall plan and work area

Measure the intended wall before you paint. A 30 × 40-inch canvas is large enough to dominate a small guest room, so mark its approximate footprint with removable tape or paper. Clear a flat work surface, protect it from acrylic, and put your paints, two brushes and water within reach. If you are using a cookie-sheet palette, place parchment paper over it and keep damp paper towels nearby as the Maison de Pax guide suggests.

  2. Set out the five-color palette

Squeeze small amounts of white, cream, grey, dark grey and navy onto the palette, leaving space between colors. Keep the original colors visible while you work so you can judge whether the mixture still belongs to the room. You can mix lighter or darker variations from this limited set instead of introducing additional hues.

  3. Mark only the key divisions

Use a light pencil or a very thin paint line to indicate the boundaries between the largest shapes. Do not draw every contour. The beginner method is to identify the big areas first, lightly outline important divisions, and let later layers cover or soften those guide marks.

  4. Block in the largest areas

Load the broader of your two brushes and place the biggest fields of color first. Work from the largest shape to the smaller ones, keeping the paint layer even enough that the canvas is no longer visually blank. Exact coverage and brush loading will vary with your canvas and paint; no source provides a required thickness or drying time.

  5. Build layers instead of chasing detail

Let the first shapes become visually established, then add a second pass where you need stronger value, cleaner overlap or a more deliberate edge. Layering lets the underlying white, cream or grey remain part of the image while dark grey and navy supply structure. The Maison de Pax guide specifically recommends layering paint before adding highlights.

  6. Add highlights and small marks last

Switch to the smaller brush for narrow accents, corners or highlight marks. Highlights should support the major forms rather than scatter attention evenly across the canvas. Step back frequently and check the painting from the distance at which guests will see it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  7. Allow the artwork to dry before finishing the edge

Once the main image is dry, paint the outside border grey, following the documented project. A border can hide small slips at the perimeter and give the large canvas a deliberate frame-like finish. If you use painter’s tape for a crisp edge or for texture blocks, Home Depot advises letting the paint dry before removing edge tape.

  8. Handle texture and hanging as separate stages

If you add texture, let the texture dry before painting over it, as Home Depot’s instructions advise. After all paint is dry, attach suitable hanging hardware for the canvas and wall, then position the artwork so its colors can be read alongside the bed and other furnishings. The sources do not specify a universal hanging height or hardware rating, so follow the hardware maker’s load guidance and your wall type.

How the main approaches differ

Decision Option 1 Option 2 Best reason to choose
Design Abstract blocks, bands or marks Loose representational image Choose abstract for maximum tolerance of uneven lines; choose representational when a recognizable subject matters more.
Canvas Ready-made stretched canvas Build a canvas from lumber and drop cloth A ready canvas is faster; construction is an optional craft project described by Home Depot.
Surface Flat painted layers Added texture under or between layers Flat paint keeps the project simple; texture adds dimension but requires a separate drying stage.
Color strategy Repeat existing bedroom colors Introduce a contrasting accent Repeat colors for a quieter result; contrast when the artwork is meant to be the room’s focal point.

None of these choices is identified by the sources as universally superior. Select the option that fits the room’s scale, the amount of time you have and your comfort with visible variation.

Make the painting belong in a guest bedroom

Borrow a color, not every color

Pick one or two colors already present in the room and let neutrals do the remaining work. In the documented palette, white, cream, grey and dark grey can bridge light walls, upholstery and wood tones, while navy can act as the stronger accent. If the room already has a bold patterned duvet, keep the canvas’s shapes broad so the wall does not become visually noisy.

Use scale to balance the furniture

Place the 30 × 40-inch format where a single large rectangle makes sense: above a bed or a substantial dresser rather than in a narrow gap between small objects. Lay the canvas on the floor first and view it from the bedroom doorway. This reveals whether the composition has enough contrast to read at a distance.

Let the border echo the room’s structure

The grey border added after drying gives the artwork a controlled perimeter. It can visually relate to grey hardware, lamps or textiles without requiring a separate frame. If your room is warmer, use the border as the point at which you decide whether the cool grey palette feels intentional or needs a different contrast strategy.

Common problems and practical fixes

The painting looks muddy

Too much overlapping of wet colors can reduce the separation between shapes. Return to the large divisions, reinforce them with the original palette and reserve the darkest navy or dark grey for the areas that need the strongest structure. Work in layers rather than mixing every color together on the canvas.

The composition feels random

Pause and identify the two or three largest shapes again. If their boundaries are unclear, lightly redraw the key divisions and repaint the broad areas before adding more small marks. A reference image can help you decide where the major light and dark masses belong.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The artwork is too busy for the room

Remove visual competition by repeating fewer colors. Let white, cream and grey occupy more area, and use navy or dark grey selectively. The room-coordination approach is to carry an existing accent color into the art, not to reproduce every textile pattern.

Edges look unfinished

Wait until the face is dry, then paint the grey border as the documented creator did. Painter’s tape can help with a crisp line; remove it only after the paint has dried if you use the Home Depot method. Do not pull tape through wet paint.

You are tempted to add texture too soon

Texture changes the surface and adds another drying dependency. Finish the flat composition first, decide where dimension genuinely helps, and then follow the separate texture-drying step. A textured canvas is not necessary to make the large guest-bedroom piece successful.

Time, expectations and source limits

Lindi reported completing her painting in less than an hour and adding the border after it dried. That is a creator-reported duration for her particular design, supplies and experience; it is not a guaranteed completion time. A first-time painter, a detailed reference image, texture or repeated corrections can all change the schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The sources do not establish current prices, product availability, paint-performance rankings or a guaranteed drying interval. They also do not identify the exact brush shapes, paint brands or hanging hardware used. Buy according to the surface, palette and wall requirements you can verify at the time, rather than treating the example as a tested product specification.

A compact checklist before you hang it

  • Confirm that the 30 × 40-inch format fits the wall and nearby furniture.
  • Choose an abstract or loose representational plan and identify its largest shapes.
  • Prepare white, cream, grey, dark grey and navy acrylics if you want the documented restrained palette.
  • Keep two brushes for broad coverage and smaller marks; add more only if your design needs them.
  • Layer the major areas before applying highlights.
  • Let the main painting dry before adding a grey border or removing painter’s tape.
  • If you add texture, let the texture dry before painting.
  • Use appropriate hanging hardware and verify its load rating for your wall and canvas.
